2 2 November 1999 The President s Message By Edgar Ingram From all indications, the Third Carolina Woodturning Symposium promises to be a successful woodturning event. Roger Austin has arranged an outstanding stable of demonstrators. The program will range from beginning to advanced turning, so there should be something of interest for everyone. The last time I checked, we had 81 registered for both days, 7 for one day and 26 spouses. With registrations still coming in, we look forward with anticipation to November 6 and 7 in Statesville. Time is approaching for election of Board Members for the class John Winslett is a current Board member eligible for re-election who has agreed to continue if elected. Grant McRorie and Scott Ollis have agreed to be nominated and serve if elected. I want to thank these men for their willingness to accept new responsibilities with the club. Keep in mind that nominations from the floor are welcome; if you have someone you want to nominate, check with them to determine if they are in a position to serve. I want to extend appreciation to Dwight Hartsell who has agreed to serve as Program Chairman with the assistance of John Hill. As you know, this is a very important role in any organization., They will need the support, which I know we can count on, of everyone to arrange programs and demonstrations that will be of interest to all of our members. If you know of nationally known turners, as well as our own members, that you would like to have demonstrate, please let Dwight or John know. I have learned of the death of Charles Alvis of Nashville, Tennessee. Many of you will know Charles as a board member of AAW. Most recently he was the liaison for AAW with the chapters in North Carolina and was active in planning for the AAW Symposium in Charlotte next year. He will be greatly missed. For those who braved the rain and fog to go up the mountain October 9 th for the visit to Penland School, they were rewarded with a very interesting day. Ron Burleson and Dick Nielsen demonstrated, so there was a choice, as well as an opportunity for some hands on turning. Thanks go to Bonner Guilford for arranging the visit. If we go again next year, maybe it will be a sunny day and the leaves will put on a good show. The show at the Iredell Museum of Arts and NORTH CAROLINA WOODTURNER Journal of the North Carolina Woodturners Association Published Monthly by the NORTH CAROLINA WOODTURNERS ASSOCIATION, INC Route 7, Box 137, Hendersonville, NC Editor: Bonner Guilford 1371 Perth Road, Troutman, NC (704) bguil@bellsouth.net Contributing Editor: Mark Sakatos OFFICERS President: Edgar Ingram, Statesville (704) Vice President: Dean Amos, Sandy Ridge (336) Treasurer: George Wunker, Winston Salem (336) Secretary: Mary Bachand, Hendersonville (828) Programs: Dick Nielsen, Gastonia (704) BOARD OF DIRECTORS John Winslett, Tryon (Term exp. 1999) (828) Lee Holt, Swannanoa (Term exp. 1999) (828) Roy Fisher, Graham (Term exp. 1999) (828) Bill Young, Asheville (Term exp. 2000) (828) Jesse Wilkinson, Conover (Term exp. 2000) (828) Gary Johnson, Statesville (Term exp. 2000) (704) Craig Summerville, Charlotte (Term exp. 2001) (704) J.T. The museum had a good article with pictures of four turnings in the local newspaper prior to the opening. I had my lathe there and did a short demonstration on the day of the opening as well as the next day for a group of second graders from one of the nearby schools. In past years, we have had shows at other museums and this is an area that we might want to expand. If you know of other museums or galleries where we can have shows, please let it be known. See you in Statesville on November 6 and 7 and by all means, bring something for the gallery. Library Notes By Mary Bachand The library remains closed as our next meeting will be the upcoming symposium in Statesville. I am happy to report that all rentals have been returned and the library is in great shape again. We will continue to add new items as they become available. This unusual hiatus from our normal meeting site has made the library less available than usual, but we will reopen, with new stock, in January.

3 3 November 1999 Member News By Mary Bachand Please welcome our new member, Charles Lampley, from Shelby, NC. Remember to show Charles and all of our recent additions your most helpful considerations. It is our total experience and skill that represents the most useful benefit of membership in North Carolina Woodturners Association. Coming Events By Dick Nielsen The November meeting of NCWA will not be held this month in lieu of the Symposium to be held at Mitchell Community College in Statesville. Hopefully, you have already registered for this terrific biannual event. The presenters are first rate as always and the entire weekend will be a great occasion for you to learn new methods and review old tricks from the best turners in our area. If you are not yet registered, contact Mary Bachand as soon as possible for information about times and accommodations. November 6-7, 1999 Carolina Woodturning Symposium Statesville, NC December 11, :00pm Annual Christmas Party TBA Remember, the show of Woodturnings at Iredell Museum of Arts and Heritage continues It s Showtime through November 7 in Statesville at 1335 Museum Road. The museum is open 10:00am to 5:00pm, Tuesday through Saturday and 2:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday. Try to stop by and visit the work of NCWA craft artists on display. Call for more information. Challenge Project By Dean Amos October Challenge. The challenge for this month was special. The task was to create a collaboration of three or more turners to design and build a project. The winners of this challenge were Erskine Moore, Sam Pate and Jim Crocker. The environment at Penland did not allow for adequate display or acknowledgement of this achievement, but the winner was a music box featuring a figure swinging within a cage. The idea and creation of this work were first rate. More on the winning entry will come in a future issue. Congratulations to Erskine, Sam and Jim, and of course, the special $100 winning prize. November Challenge. No Challenge for the Symposium. December Challenge. Our standard challenge for December is Christmas ornaments or decorations. Any type or kind of turning will do, so long as the theme is Christmas. Do your best for the season. Our annual outing was held at Penland School in Penland, NC this year. Although the weather did not cooperate, we still had a great day in the NC mountains. October Program Re- The Penland staff were exceptionally helpful, especially John Clark and Stacey Lane who helped make our rainy day successful anyway. There was also the opportunity to visit other campus areas in glass or clay or other craft arts and a spectacular Penland Gallery. So much to do, so little time. Our demonstrations centered around three areas and lathes. Several people used the mini-lathe while Dick Nielsen demonstrated sphere turning on a General. Don Olsen and Ron Burleson both gave demonstrations in basic turning on Ron s Woodfast. There was ample opportunity for questions and hands on learning. Between demos, there was time for exploration and a fine lunch, including hot soup for a cold day, on the balcony of Northlight. Hopefully, we can return for another, drier outing next fall to this gorgeous and renowned craft school.

5 5 November 1999 Scholarship Report By John Hill SURFACE TREATMENTS I was fortunate to receive a partial scholarship grant from North Carolina Woodturners which I used to attend a two week session with John Jordan at Arrowmont School in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I will try to convey a few of the techniques that John shared with us. Mark Gardner, his studio assistant, also was a wealth of knowledge. We turned a number of simple bowls and hollow form vessels which were later to be textured, carved, colored, etc.. This is a good exercise at home as well. First it improves your bowl turning skills and then you have something to texture. If you don t like it, no big deal, just throw it back in the fire wood pile. The worst that will happen is that you will gain that necessary time spent on the lathe. John always stressed the importance of sharp tools and showed the proper use of various grinding jigs that allow you to quickly repeat the grind and in a matter of 6 seconds, have a perfectly sharpened tool with a minimum of metal removed. He suggests a 60 or 80 grit wheel. Invariably, when a student would ask him about a problem that they were having, he would suggest that they go back to the grinder and see if that cured the problem. Guess what. It usually did. A person with a sharp tool can do wonders on a poor lathe, but a person with dull tools can do nothing on the best lathe. Before texturing a surface, one should have as good a finish as if it were not going to be textured. Remove all tool marks, bumps, ridges, etc. and sand smooth. You won t have another chance to make it right. John stresses that line carved patterns like the leaves on the bowl shown in the photo, should be hand drawn and laid out with a pencil, not traced from a pattern. They are all slightly different. They are carved with a veiner before other texturing occurs. John taught the use of electric reciprocating carvers and hand held carving tools. The orange peel texture on both the inside and outside of the bowl shown, was obtained by inserting a nail that had been cut off and rounded smooth on the end, into the collet of the reciprocating carver and let vibrate against the surface while the tool was held perpendicular to the surface and moved in a random pattern. Of course to have feet on a bowl, you turn a ring on the bottom of the bowl and later cut out portions leaving the feet. Before carving this waste away, draw the feet free hand. Three feet, equally spaced will always let the bowl or vessel sit solid. Mark demonstrated a technique for having rough textured lines around a vessel by holding a stiff wire wheel in his hand and pressing it against the revolving piece. The wire scratched the surface and he then cut a line on each side of the area so textured, to set it off. Mark also showed how to create handles on the side of a hollow vessel by leaving a raised bead around the vessel where the handles were to be, and then carve away all of the bead except the portion which would become the handles. The black ebony look and color is obtained by using a dedicated brush to apply black leather dye. John gets it from Tandy Co. but any leather supply company would have it. Paint it on and let it dry and then wipe it off. The dye penetrates the wood, so be aware that the sub surface is black as well. Surface embellishment will lead you off in new directions with your work. Smooth and round can be very pleasing but the right embellishments can make things exciting. What do you want life to be? Pleasing or Exciting?

6 6 November 1999 Scholarship Report By Jane Sunier Turning at Campbell Folk School I was the lucky recipient of the $300 scholarship North Carolina Woodturners offered in January. I used the money toward the Basic Woodturning class during the week of June 6 at the J. C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Doug Barnes was the instructor of this basic skills class and, lo and behold, he was assisted by Bob Fisher, a former President of NCWA. Our class had ten students, 8 men and 2 women, with varying degrees of experience, including some beginners. We worked at our own pace with a lot of "hands on effort with the deep-fluted bowl gouge. Occasionally we used the spindle gouge to shape a foot and the parting tool, if our bowl hadn't already de-parted. We worked between centers so we could change the position of our wood to take advantage of any "pattern", but I don't think any of us were that sophisticated - YET. We learned to turn a waste block in order to reverse turn. Sharpening is still a problem for me, but I'm getting better at it. Doug, with great patience, worked with me on presenting the gouge properly and getting the level of the tool rest down lower in relation to the work - two things that enable me to make those shavings fly!! The class had a fieldtrip to Lissi Oland's workshop and June Westerman's "Round and Smooth" Wood Art shop. We turned wood six to nine hours a day (6 were official), had afternoon demonstrations of other crafts being taught that week, "Morning Song" (a 1/2 hour gathering before breakfast) and entertainment each evening. I completed four bowls and a weed pot (my first). Doug Barnes is a great instructor. I recommend his basics class to any inexperienced turner. It was a great week! Thank you NCWA for such a wonderful opportunity!! Symposium Reminder This will be your last reminder about the upcoming Carolinas Woodturning Symposium in Statesville. Call Mary for registration information. Also, the drawing for the Frank Sudol turning will be held at the party on Saturday at the Symposium. Tickets remain available but your chances to join in are dwindling. See Mary to get tickets while they last. For Sale Seco Dust Collector. 1 HP, 650 CFM, 125 volt, one year old.
