Like many woodturners Dave started out working in his garage. He now turns in a large studio on the shores of South Puget Sound. Dave has taken his talents, fabricated his own lathe and tools which he uses on his turnings. He does one of a kind pieces as no two pieces of wood are the same. He shows particular attention to form, detail and finishes which best show the fine grain and beauty of the natural woods. Dave is a member of American Association of Woodturners. He is affiliated with the Olympic Peninsula Chapter and is on the Board of Directors of South Puget Sound Chapter. 2 Fellow Members, Message from the President Recently the floor of the Gym, our meeting place, was refurbished. Tonight at the Board of Director s meeting, the board voted to donate $ toward the cost of the project. The check will be presented to Kitsap Adventist School at our regular meeting on September 30 th. Also at the September meeting Mr. Dale Larson will be giving a short presentation including slides on the American Association of Woodturners and the benefits of being a member. If you have not already done so please pick up an application and give it some thought. All the equipment for the hearing impaired used during our meetings was the result of a grant received from the AAW. At the present time all OPCAAW Board Members are members of the AAW as well as a substantial number of our chapter members. Some good news, as some of you may be aware, something went wrong with the taping of Dave Schweitzer s last demo and it turned out to be a fascinating Silent Movie. This month he is going to repeat that demonstration but this time we hope it will be with sound. As most of you know Dave s demonstrations are very informative, this event should be titled DO NOT MISS. The wood auction that was scheduled for July and canceled due to extreme heat is in the process of being rescheduled. Tentatively it will be held on a Sunday in November as part of a daylong event with a number of demonstrations. We just have a few minor details to work out like exactly what day but other than that it is a go. Think along the lines of bringing massive amounts of wood, lunch and a whole list of questions that you would like answers to. This should be a very informative day as well as one to assist you in putting in a winter s supply of good turning stock. A thought, the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners is your chapter, made up of your friends and fellow turners. Every year there are those who step forward and volunteer to become a member of the Board of Directors to assist in the organization and operation of our chapter. This can be a very rewarding experience. We all have ideas of what we would like to see done but seldom are these thoughts passed on. If you have the time we have the space. We are not talking about a great deal of time or tremendous effort but it does take a few hours a month. If you are so inclined or just a bit interested please take a few minutes and talk to me or any of the other Board Members. Doug SPECIAL EVENT!! Our Christmas party this year will be held on Wednesday, December 9th. We're hoping that having it earlier in the month will reduce the chance of a weather related cancellation. Will be giving more details in subsequent newsletters, but wanted you to put this date on your calendar. Also, be thinking if you have an item that you would like to donate.
