2 Volume 15, Number 10 THE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By David Kaylor Attendance at our September meeting was below average, but we had a lively afternoon discussing various techniques and tools for hollow turning, thanks to the leadership of Sam McDowell. The morning hands-on session seemed to go well, with 2-4 people around the 5 lathes that were set up, featuring hollow turning, natural edge turning, and sharpening. Several of those who attended have expressed appreciation for the mentors efforts. Special thanks to members Edgar Ingram, Grant McRorie, Sam McDowell, and Don Olsen [ed s note --- also thanks to David Kaylor] for volunteering as instructors. We will not have another regular meeting at the Woodworking Shop until January, but we will have three exciting opportunities, which I urge all our members to take part in. As you have heard several times by now, our October meeting will be at Camp Grimes, on the Mecklenburg Scout Reservation. Several of us took part in a program of demonstrations for the Boy Scouts there this past summer, and I m sure others share my eagerness to return to this beautiful place to enjoy an afternoon and evening of fellowship and learning. Jim Miles has spearheaded the planning, and has put together an attractive program. See his article elsewhere in this Journal, and be sure to let Jim know of your plans to attend. Even if you signed up at the September meeting, send him a message. Our November meeting will consist of the Carolina Woodturning Symposium, November 5-6, in Statesville. The Symposium not only provides excellent opportunities to see great demonstrations; we also depend on the income from it to provide a major part of our program finances in the coming two years. Your participation is needed by the club as well as beneficial to your own turning. Please register as soon as possible with the enclosed form. In December we will have our annual Christmas party. The First Presbyterian Church of Hickory has graciously welcomed us to use their fellowship hall. Ken Phillips has volunteered to coordinate the event. Thanks, Ken. More information about it will come in subsequent issues of this Journal. You will find in this Journal information about how to participate in the annual Klingspor Extravaganza the last weekend of October. This event will provide an opportunity to display your work to the public, enter a competition, and possibly sell your work. I look forward to seeing all of you at these events. Thanks to all whose efforts make them possible. The Board of Directors will meet at 1:00 at Camp Grimes. David Membership - by Mary Bachand NCW Calendar of Events Symposium Registration Bryan Myers and John Melius win the "prize" for being the first to renew their memberships for Bryan paid at our meeting and John had a check waiting for me in the mail when we got home Saturday. I encourage the rest of you to do this deed before the holiday spending starts. Welcome new members Wayne Veit of Hickory and Leslie Miller of Morganton. Library News - by Mary Bachand We have added the disc that cover the AAW journals to our growing collection. My "holiday special" had a so-so result. I had hoped that some of you who never check out anything would maybe try just once. I am thankful for my "regulars". See you at the picnic but don't bring back your rentals. October 8 - Camp Grimes Boy Scout camp. November Carolina Symposium. December - Holiday Festival Challenge Projects October - wearables - something to wear - wear it to Camp Grimes. 5 October 2005 This month I welcome Don Olsen as a guest columnist to the Beginners Corner. His article covers the finishing process he uses to such good effect on his turnings. I thank him for his contribution. There are many finishing processes out there, and here is another. I have developed it over the years from input from many people and my own experiences. SANDING: Because I turn many irregular pieces, I sometimes start power sanding using a hard flexible disk with 60 grit. The remainder of the sanding grit sequence, using a firm foam rubber hook and loop (H&L) holder is: 60, 80, 120, 180 and 240. I then use a variable speed random orbital sander with the final grit. If a higher sheen is desired, a black non-woven pad (held on a soft foam rubber H&L holder) is used to buff the wood followed by buffing with a white non-woven pad. The sanding speed is about 862 rpm, and the buffing speed is about 3,450 rpm. I ll start sanding at whatever grit is necessary, and stop sanding at whatever grit gives me my desired look. The random orbital sander allows me to stop at any grit and remove the swirl marks. Metabo 3-¼ right angle, model SXE Firm foam rubber H&L holder: white, tapered holder available from Packard Woodworks. Non-woven pads: 6 x 9-½ fine and ultra-fine from Packard Woodworks (cut a disk ½ larger than the holder). These are the thickest I ve found. Soft foam rubber H&L holder: black, tapered holder available from Klingspor. My sanding/buffing system: I wanted to get the motor driving the sandpaper away from the sanding dust. Even with a vacuum pickup near my sanding, dust would be drawn into the drill by its air intake. A flexible shaft by Kirjes was the solution (available from Klingspor and Woodworkers Supply) and could be driven by a motor away from the dust. Next, a right-angle (RA) drive made by Vermont American and available at Lowe s holds the H&L holders. I checked my local Lowe s in early September, and unfortunately they don t carry that RA drive but Home Depot does. The end of the flexible shaft is a 3/8-24 threaded stud for a chuck, and the ends of the RA drive accept the 3/8-24 thread. One end of the RA drive is one half the input while the other end is double the input. Driving the shaft and the RA drive with a 1,725 rpm motor gives 862 rpm (sanding) at the half end and 3,450 rpm (buffing) at the double end. One of the attachments for the RA drive had a ¼ threaded hole which I had drilled out, and tapped a ¼ -20 hole put in the side, for a set screw, to hold the shafts of the H&L holders. FINISHING: - Most of my pieces are finished with Watco Danish Oil. I can use it in a dusty environment, and it highlights the grain of the wood. I follow the application instructions on the can, but wait a few days until I can t smell the oil on the piece. Then I feel it s cured, and the piece can be buffed with the white non-woven pad if I want a higher sheen. Additionally, I ll wax the piece for more sheen and protection. Each month Don will have tips, techniques and suggestions which will be of most interest to those members who are in the early stage of their turning career. If any member has a question or subject they would like to see covered send an to Don at donoetjen@aol.com. EQUIPMENT: Hard flexible disk: Power-Lock by Merit powered by a Sioux Angle Drill (highest rpm range which can be used for buffing). The rest of the sandpaper I use is Klingspor. 6 Volume 15, Number 10 Demonstrator Review by Gil Millsaps The morning session of the September meeting was hands-on instruction that was well attended and offered members various learning opportunities. The instructors were Don Olsen, platters; David Kaylor, hollowing; Edgar Ingram, natural edge; Sam McDowell, hollowing; Grant McRorie, hollowing and others who had an impromptu session on sharpening. Thanks to each of these instructors for the time and effort required to bring in the mini-lathes. The afternoon demonstrations included show and tell on hollowing tools and techniques by fellow members: Sam McDowell, Don Olsen, David Kaylor, Edgar Ingram, and a demo by Scott Caskey on a coring system. Demonstrator: Sam McDowell While Sam was preparing for his demo, he discussed some ideas on wood sources, such as local sawmills and chip mills. He also shared his method of drying green wood vessels. He found an old freezer, cut a hole in top and bottom for air circulation and installed a light bulb inside for heating. He found that a 100 watt bulb maintained an optimum temperature of 115 F, a suggestion from the audience was to use an in-line thermostat. After chuck mounting a preturned vessel, Sam checked that it was turning true, then drilled a 1 pilot hole. Tip: Care should be taken not to drill too deep to prevent drill from freezing with chips - make repeated short plunges. He first demonstrated an outrigger hollowing tool made by Al Basham and now sold by Crown Tool. The outrigger bar controls torque caused by hooked tool. Sam had another tool of the same design made of ¾ rod to help eliminate chatter. His cutters were made from planer blades and molder head cutters ground to desired shapes. Cutters that were pointed were aggressive while rounded cutters were used for smoothing surfaces. While hollowing, Sam was checking the wall thickness with calipers. He showed three different styles of calipers. His second tool utilized a D bar holder with a braced tool bar with 1 diameter. The end of his bar had a shelf for mounting various blades. The gap in the D slot controls torque from blade and pitch of tool. The front of the bar will ride on the lathe tool rest, cuts are made by sliding tool in and out of vessel. Tips: * Keep tip of blade above centerline of work to help eliminate catches. * Start at top of vessel wall and finish wall to thickness as you work to bottom. * When using calipers make sure they are set perpendicular to wall for most accurate reading. * Desired depth can be determined by putting tape on length of bar and marking depth desired. * Beeswax makes good lubricant on bars and rests. Demonstrator: Don Olsen Don first showed the Dennis Stewart arm brace handle system with straight and hooked bar. When using the hooked bar, keep straight portion of tool on rest, not the curved portion. He said system causes jolts and shock to elbow and shoulder areas so he made a new tool using a ¾ bar mounted into a long wood handle with flats to determine tool orientation. He uses this tool as a roughing tool. Along with this he has a T tool rest with a 5/16 eyebolt threaded into one side of T. He inserts bar through eyebolt to give full range of motion and act as a pivot point, so you can use your body for moving tool. Don uses teardrop scraper blades and slots out their mounting holes; this makes change out easier. Don s next tool demonstrated was for deep (24-30 ) vessels. This tool was over 7 long, made of 1 ½ mechanical tubing with a fitting on one end to accept ¾ boring bars. He filled the tube with sand for additional weight and shock absorption and applied a pipe cap at the end. This tool uses a capturing tool rest nearest to the vessel (instead of the tailstock end as is commonly seen with other captured systems) and an outboard support to help with weight of the tool. Don mounts all his pieces on a faceplate with a number of #10 deep thread screws. Tips: * Vessels with large bottoms help support wood at top of vessel as you are turning if the vessel is a Grecian shape or smaller at bottom, leave wood stock on outside and work down as you hollow. * Use 1 PVC pipe cut to length to set height of rest and maintain that height when making adjustments. Page 6

7 Demonstrator: David Kaylor system, he made three bowl blanks in 15 minutes while discussing its operation. He says that ease of making blanks is a big benefit but the best is his shop does not get full of shavings. October 2005 September Show&Tell Demonstrator: Edgar Ingram David used an arm brace handle with ¾ bar and a special cutter that he purchased from Matt Birchfield. This is a semi-circular cutter. This tool is a cutter as opposed to scrapers shown with other tools. When using this tool it can be very aggressive. As you approach wood turn tool counter clockwise about 45 then turn clockwise to increase cutting aggressiveness. The Birchfield cutter is difficult to sharpen but can be done by working outside of cutter with a hone. Demonstrator: Scott Caskey Scott demonstrated his Oneway easy core system that makes an easy task of making nested bowl blanks or multiple blanks of the same size. The core base unit has (2) posts; one for the knife and one for the cutter support. Cost of the basic system is $180, with knife sets ranging from $130 to $170 each. Scott had an 18 diameter poplar blank and after initial set-up of the Edgar s hollowing system included a T bar rest with a pin on one side. He showed two boring bars, one straight and one hooked. His outrigger brace could be used on either bar. The curved brace was welded to the side of a short cylinder that slid onto the bar and was held in place by set screws. Edgar used curved ¼ square bars as cutting tools on the braced hollowing tool. He mounted a laser light so that it was over and perpendicular to the cutting tip. As you turn the inside of the vessel the light spot shines down onto outside of vessel so that you can determine wall thickness and depth. Thank you to all the instructors and demonstrators that shared their knowledge during our September meeting. They gave visual demonstrations, as well as answering our questions. We are fortunate to have these in-house talented members. Page 7

Nothing may be removed prior to 4:00 pm! Rules for The Competition and Sale: Each Chapter will be responsible for all aspects of putting together and manning a craft fair type display of the works of their members for show and/or sale. All aspects include: bringing the turnings, the display, set up, tear down, handling sales including sales taxes, etc. The display area can be 10 x 10, 10 x 15, or 10 x 20. Electricity will be available for lighting. No demos will be allowed in the display area! Your chapter may use this event as a fundraiser, i.e. you may charge each member an entry fee and/or take percentage of sales. You are writing your own rules. You determine how many piece each member can bring, etc. The competition will be broken into two parts. A Judge will select winners and runner-ups in three divisions based on turning skill level: Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded at each level. Rules are as follows: Each member participating may submit 1 piece for judging. A colored entry form will be displayed with entries to indicate level Judges decision is final. All turnings on display in your booth will be included in the competition based on Categories. Ribbons will be awarded in categories to include, but not limited to: bowls, hollow forms, boxes, platters, pens, sculptures, spindles, segmented turnings, toys, etc. Tops for Tots Again this year, we are asking turners to make and bring tops. All tops will be given to children at local hospitals, rehab groups, children s homes, etc. This is your chance to give back to the community and make a child smile! (No CD tops please, breakage is a problem.) The chapter that makes the most tops per member will receive the prize of a Delta Midi Lathe. We will use a very simple formula: Number of tops divided by the number of members = TPM (Tops per Member). i.e. a Chapter A with 20 members bringing in 100 tops will have a TPM = 5. A Chapter B with 120 members bringing in 410 tops will have a TPM = Chapter A will win! In all cases, the children are the real winners! Lets make tops! Membership will be as of October 1 st.
