Design Brief Air Nailer Introduction The air nailer is a tool used to drive nails/fasteners into wood or other materials. Using an air nailer, or another kind of power nailer, lets you complete jobs that require large amounts of nailing, in lots less time than it would take with a hammer and nails. Today s builders and construction workers often favor nail guns over hammers. Air nailers work in different ways. Some release one nail with each pull of the trigger. This is the safest and easiest to learn to use. Another kind of nail gun has a rapid fi re trigger that can easily release two nails with one pull. These require a lot more practice to get them to operate as you intend. There are nail guns on the market that have adjustable fi ring capability so you can choose the fi ring style that you re comfortable using. The advantage to these is that you can learn to use the gun slowly and speed it up as you get better at using it. In the same way that air nailers fi re in different ways, they also load in different ways. Nails for the nailers are held together with paper, plastic, or wire. Two of these loading methods are: Coil type nailers use magazine style rolls of nails that are on long flexible strings. Coil nailers can have up to 300 nails loaded into a round magazine on the nailer at one time. Stick (or strip) style nailers use nails held in strips that feed into a long magazine; these usually hold 20 to 40 nails. If you would like to know more about air nailers, see one or more of the following websites. Your instructor may assign specifi c sites to visit. (This link takes you to a video series about using fi nish and brad nailers; there are 21 videos in the series.) (This link takes you to a video series about using and maintaining cordless nailers; there are 15 videos in the series.) Safety Design Briefs Air Nailer Page 3

Safety Design Briefs Words You Should Know compressed air air that is kept under pressure, usually greater than that of the atmosphere fasteners nails, staples, brads, etc., that are shot from air nailers Air Nailer Safety Rules The following is a list of safety procedures for using the air nailer. Study these procedures carefully. These safety rules are for your protection and should be followed at all times. Wear safety glasses or goggles at all times while operating the air nailer. Make sure you are dressed correctly for the job remove ties, scarves, jewelry, and gloves, and keep long hair tied back. Never use the air nailer, or any other power tool, unless your instructor is with you. Never allow yourself to be distracted. Stay focused on what you are doing; distractions can cause accidents. Don t look around or talk to others. Finish what you are doing before responding to a tap on the shoulder or answering a question. Do not turn air pressure too high. Use clean, dry, regulated, compressed air that doesn t exceed the recommended pressure for your nailer. Never connect your air nailer to a bottled gas like oxygen, helium, or any other bottled gas because it could cause an explosion and serious personal injury. Only connect your air nailer to compressed air. Disconnect the air nailer from the air supply hose before doing tool maintenance, clearing a jammed nail, leaving the work area, moving the tool to another location, or handing the tool to another person. A disconnected air nailer can t accidentally shoot. Never use an air nailer that is leaking air, has missing or damaged parts, or needs repair. Make sure all screws and caps are securely tightened. Never use an air nailer if the safety, trigger, or springs are inoperable, missing, or damaged. Do not alter or remove safety, trigger, or springs. Make daily inspections for free movement of trigger and safety mechanisms. It is your responsibility to ensure that the air nailer is working properly. Air Nailer Page 4

Design Brief Air Nailer Connect the air nailer to the air supply before loading the fasteners to prevent a fastener from being fired during connection. The air nailer s driving mechanism may cycle when the tool is connected to the air supply. Always assume the air nailer is loaded (has fasteners in it). Always keep the air nailer pointed away from yourself and others. To prevent unintentional firing, do not load fasteners with the trigger or safety depressed. Remove your finger from the trigger when not driving fasteners. Never carry the air nailer with your finger on the trigger. It may fire a fastener if the safety is bumped while the trigger is depressed. Don t overreach. Keep proper footing and balance. Fire fasteners into your work area only. Hold the air nailer firmly to maintain control while allowing it to recoil away from the work surface as the fastener is driven. If the safety element on the air nailer is allowed to reconnect with the work surface (on the recoil) before the trigger is released, an unwanted fastener may be fired. Do not drive fasteners on top of other fasteners or with the air nailer at too steep an angle. The fasteners can ricochet and possibly cause an injury. Do not drive fasteners close to the edge of the workpiece. This could cause the workpiece to split and the fastener to fly free or ricochet. Keep hands and body parts a safe distance away. Do not stand in front of, or in line with, the nailer. Always stand beside or behind it. Disconnect the air nailer before leaving the area. Clean it according to your instructor s directions. Store it in its proper place. Safety Design Briefs Air Nailer Page 5

Safety Design Briefs Visit one of the websites listed in the introduction to this design brief, or if you have your instructor s permission, search for information on your own. Your instructor may tell you which to look at or may let you choose. After studying the information or video, answer the following: The web url and/or movie title Did you notice any mistakes or things done incorrectly? If so, explain below. If not, list fi ve things you learned or that interested you. Air Nailer Page 6

Air Nailer Safety Posttest Objective 1: Complete the Safety Posttest for the air nailer with a score of 100%. TOOLS AND MATERIALS Safety Posttest for the air nailer pencil score card, answer sheet, or notebook paper INSTRUCTIONS For this objective you will complete the Safety Posttest for the air nailer with a score of 100%. Get the Safety Posttest questions from your instructor. Follow his or her instructions to fi nish the posttest. When you fi nish, return all test materials to your instructor. You have one class period to complete this test. You must score 100% to pass the test you cannot miss any questions! If you do miss a question, you must study the safety rules again and take the test on a new computer score card or blank sheet of paper. Remember you must pass the air nailer Safety Posttest with a score of 100% before continuing the Design Brief activities. Safety Design Briefs Air Nailer Page 7

Air Nailer Checklist Objective 2: Demonstrate safe operation of the air nailer. TOOLS AND MATERIALS air nailer safety glasses or goggles wood stock vise or clamps brush or wood scrap FOLLOW THESE STEPS As you complete each step, check the box. When you have successfully completed every step, give the completed checklist to your instructor. STEP 1: STEP 2: Tell your instructor you are ready to see a demonstration of how to properly operate the air nailer using the procedure described in this Design Brief. Important: Watch this demonstration carefully. If you are confused about any part of the demonstration, ask your instructor to show that part of the demonstration again. When you understand how to operate the air nailer, tell your instructor you are ready to demonstrate the proper operation of the air nailer. WARNING MOVING PARTS can catch hair, jewelry, and loose clothing. DRESS PROPERLY. Remove all jewelry, fasten long hair, and wear clothes that will not get caught in moving parts. Before attaching the air nailer to the air supply, check that it is in proper working order. Be sure the trigger and all safety mechanisms are working properly. Ask your instructor s permission to connect the air supply. Do not load the fasteners or nails until the air supply is attached. Hold the air nailer fi rmly and comfortably. Ask your instructor s permission to turn on the power. Put the air nailer in the correct fi ring position on the workpiece and pull the trigger. After you have fi nished fi ring the nails in the workpiece, turn the power off. Do not keep your fi nger on the trigger when not in use. Disconnect the air supply. Never leave the area until the air supply has been disconnected. When you have fi nished, clean up your work area and return all tools and materials to their proper storage areas. Air Nailer Page 10
