Auction Meeting WORK IN PROGRESS October 18, 2017 Reporter: Don Dressel There was no Works in Progress at the October SMA meeting, as it was our auction night, where, once a year we have an auction for our SMA members who want to offer to other SMA members the ship modeling items that they no longer have any real use for. The table is usually groaning with lots of tools, wood, ship kits and other things of interest to the members of the SMA, but this year we had not ship modeling books. $ was exchanged at the auction for various items of interest to the SMA members, $50.00 of which went to the club. See the photo s below. There was one model that was brought in by Burt Goldstein, which is pictured below, but he did not make any presentation on the model. It is hoped that he will bring the model to the next SMA meeting. As usual, it is an interesting card stock model. The auction took most all of the evening, with lots of stock wood offered (from Lloyd Warner) as well as plastic and wooden ship model kits, tools and accessories. Fun was had by all and we now look forward to next months meeting, where SMA members will bring in their latest efforts on ship modeling.
By Don Dressel Old Salts in Port: Steve Jones, John Bakker, Don Dressel and Tom Stellar. Ships in Port: Derfflinger, HMS Vanguard. Washington Galley, Soleil Royal John Bakker was first up with a discussion about the painting of the yellow gun port strip on the HMS Vanguard. He explained that there was not much work done on his ship models, as he was busy with his scroll saw making decorations for Halloween. He showed some of the items he had done on his scroll saw, which can help explain why he is so good at making some of the items for his ship models. He also discussed some things about his Washington Galley and the necessity to make more progress on it. Some discussion was concerning the recent fires in the Orange County area and the need for his children to relocate some of John s models (avoiding the fire) including the Soleil Royal, which we have not seen for some time, as it was in his children s home. I thought a picture of the Soleil Royal would not go amiss for our readers interest, showing his model of the Philadelphia Galley along with his midsection of the USS. Constitution mounted above the model. Also shown in the photo of the Washington Galley are two waterline markers used by John, as there was also a discussion on this aspect of ship model building. Next up was Don Dressel who discussed the progress he is making on the masting and rigging of the Derfflinger. Many of the spars have already been made and the rigging of the shrouds on the foremast and mainmast is progressing. There are a couple of photos on the next page with show the progress being made on these lines. Don has also replaced the gammoning on the bow sprit as the original bowsprit was made from white line and thus was incorrect of the type of line installed and had to be removed. It also did not have the correct number of
turns and orientation that should have been there. As will be noted, the bowsprit has a woodling installed halfway along its length which is again technically not correct but the bow had been originally cut by John, as he was not going to install the rigging and had to be lengthened to its proper length. A form of surgery had also to be done on the forward grating in front of the fore mast to incorporate the blocks necessary for the main yard lift which will be installed later in the running rigging installation but had to be dome at this stage before the fore shrouds were done. A hole was cut at the proper location in the grating and a long wooden block installed to support the shelve, which should have been installed on the main deck below the forecastle deck, but apparently there is no main deck at this location (I do not know how the original kit instructions delt with this problem). See the photo to the left that shows the lines coming out of the grating with the triple sister block attached. Once this was done, then the fore shrouds were completed and the main shrouds started. Don commented that he thinks he is going to rattle down the lower shrouds before he progresses much further, as he thinks that is the way it was really done when the actual masting and rigging of a ship took place. Once the lower shrouds and ratlines are in place, then the lower stays will be installed with their respective mouses, cotharpins, and special blocks. Instead of trying to make a mouse out of line, Don first carves a mouse to proper shape out of wood, paints it black, and then installs it that way. No one has, as yet, made any mention of the difference and it looks good to scale. Next Don talked about just how he installed the shrouds, the picture to the left indicating the jig that he made to make sure the deadeyes all match up once the individual shrouds are installed. The jig is made based on the plans of the model with respect to size. The last picture of the Derfflinger shown below indicates just how this turns out. Although the Mayflower Group meeting was lacking in attendance, still those who attended had a great time. Perhaps the auction meeting kept some SMA members from attending the meeting. We hope for more SMA members to attend the next session of the Mayflower Group.
The ROPE Tokyo Honorary SMA Members Part IX By Don Dressel Mr. Etsuro Tsuboi This is a continuation of last two months articles on one of ROPE S finest scratch building ship modelers. This will be the final article, starting off with his beginning efforts to have an originally designed studio to build his models. Mr. Tsuboi states: My home is located at a highland of Shizuoka Prefecture with a nice view of Mt. Fuji. I wanted to have my own studio for modeling. In 199 I made drawings and built originally designed studio of 40 square meters. All of the tools and devices are arranged so that I could reach them while sitting on my chair. My studio has a good view of Mt. Fuji and it is a perfect place for spending time in modeling. When the quests of SMA visited my home in 2014, I guided them to my original studio. See the next five photo s to show his studio setup, home, and visitation by members of the SMA along with a view of Mt. Fuji The first photo is of Mr. Tsuboi, the second photo to the right being his studio location at his home. There follows a number of photos of his workshop from various angles to show the extent and size of his studio. You can see the variety of tools used as well as the homemade tools realized to make his modeling efforts easier. While making the HMS Victory at 1/300 scale he realized that there was no reference material or textbooks for making miniature models, so he was forced to do everything from scratch
by himself. He wanted to include in his article his three methods for making HMS Victory at 1/300 scale. While he is working on the models, he always tries to feel the sensation in his fingers and accordingly his jigs are made to meet his own methods and sensations. The method for making rope was one of his first challenges. A device had to be designed to accomplish this task. Most of the modelers make ropes by their own methods. In my case, I prepared a vertical device to twist three strands. In my opinion, this was is more stable than horizontal walking device s. I used a motor available on the market. For the parting device, traveler and weight, I prepared three different sizes and weights. With these devices, I could make all of the ropes required for the model. See the photo below the Mt. Fuji photo (as viewed from his studio). The device is hung vertically on the wall of his studio instead of being horizontal. It may be clearer when you see the drawing of the device below.
Ultra fine rope was made using this device. He purchased 100% polyester industrial sewing thread COL69. The twisting of the thread is not so tight and he could part them to make around 50 strands. Out of these strands, one stand is cut by 160mm length. Three of these parted strands (all at 160mm length) are hooked to both ends of the device. By changing the number of strands, I could make over 20 different sizes of the rope, between 0.04mm thick to 0.5mm thick. For example: 1x1x1 makes 0.04mm thick 1x1x2 makes 0.054mm thick 1x2x2 makes 0.06mm thick 2x2x2 makes 0.065mm thick 3x3x3 makes 0.081mm thick The devices used on the vertical rope walk are shown to the left, while the methods of hanging the various threads are shown in the photo on the previous page, thanks to the sketch that Mr. Tsuboi provided. The next jig that he made has to do with making his deadeyes in the very small scale that he uses, there being 6 kinds between 0.8mm to 1.3mm. The first step is, of course, making the jigs for the deadeyes. These steps are shown in the following 6 photos on the next page. One (1), prepare a wood block of length 1.75mm, width 25mm and height 15mm. Two (2) make a brass pipe of inner diameter 3mm and length 10mm. Outer diameter of tube is at your option. Three (3), make a brass pipe of OUTER diameter 3mm and length 10mm. Inner diameter of tube is again at your own option. Four (4), mark three lines at 120 degrees on the wood block described at step 1. At the center of the block, drill a hole to insert the brass pipe described above. Insert the pipe and fix it firmly. Five (5), Insert round bar of boxwood with 10mm length to the brass described above. The round bar is processed to meet inner diameter of the pipe. Make three of them. Step six (6), At the length of 5mm which is the center of the pipe, drill a hole of diameter 0.8mm for inserting 40mm length of wire. Make three of them. Seven (7), At the ends of three pipes described above, drill total 6 holes at the center, 6 holes have diameters of 0.8mm, 0.9mm, 1.0mm, 1.1mm, 1.2mm and 1.3mm. These 6 holes are for inserting deadeyes. If this is a little confusing, I hope the following drawings and photos will help you to understand the process.
B. Prepare 6 kinds of wood bar which are cut at thickness of deadeyes. C. Fit the wood block as described above at drilling machine. For example, 0.8mm deadeye is processed as follows: first, make a hole with 0.11mm drill at slightly outside of the center of the deadeye. Once this hole is made, then rotate the pipe by 120 degrees for making the second hole. The third hole can be made by rotating the pipe by 120 degrees. Following these steps, 6 different kinds of deadeye can be processed. It is hoped that the drawings and pictures included with this description of deadeye making will facilitate the miniature modeler in making the necessary deadeyes for his model. The last procedure described is Mr. Tsuboi s method of making gratings with a number of photos to help describe the process. (1) Boxwood is used for making gratings which are processed using a circular saw. Preparation begins by preparing a wood plate of 25mm length by 50mm width by 0.5mm thick. (2) A blade of 0.25mm is fitted to the circular saw to make groves of 0.25mm depth at same intervals. (3) Prepare wood plate larger than the plate described at (1). Glue the plate as described before. The method of doing this could use the glue stick or white glue, as long as it can be later removed using water or a solvent. The bond can be thinned if necessary. (4) Wood plate with boxwood plate is then turned around by 90 degrees and grooves are cut at 0.25 intervals. It is important to note that grooves must be cut over 0.5mm depth, almost cutting the base plate. This is to avoid the plates falling apart. (5) Dip the plate described in (4) in warm water or whatever solvent is required to facilitate detachment. Following this method, one piece for grating is done. (6) By assembling these pieces, grating can be made. (7) For the
model, grating sizes of 6mm x 3mm, 6mm x 5mm, 6mm x7mm and 2mm x 7mm were made for my models. Check below for the photos of this process: The procedures outlined here were all accomplished before any tools were available to be able to complete the required items for the miniature ship model, all requiring the modeler to work out a method to make the necessary items.
NRG Conference at St. Petersburg, Florida last month. There will be a report on the events of the latest NRG Conference next month in the SMA Newsletter. There were, as far as I am aware, 5 members of the SMA who attended this years event Mike DeCirbo, Dave Yotter, Doug Tolbert, Gus Agustin and myself. For those who did not attend, you missed a great and interesting event with a great tour of the Coast Guard facilities, excellent speakers and a great banquet at the end. Treasurer s Report Larry Van Es reports that there is $4, in the SMA account for the end of September2017. Web Manager s Report Doug Tolbert has indicated that all the past SMA Newsletters are on the SMA web page for access to members only. Doug posts the latest SMA Newsletter onto the web page as soon as it is published. If there are any comments concerning the SMA Web page please inform one of the SMA officers. San Diego Ship Modelers Guild For those SMA members who may be interested, the San Diego Ship Modelers Guild now has their meetings on the Berkley on the second Tuesday of each month. Your editor and reporter routinely attend the meeting that is usually very informative and enlightening. Auction Returns The auction that was held last month in October resulted in an exchange of $ by SMA members for a variety of nautical items including wood, tools and ship model kits. All had a fun time and all went away with great bargains. The club gathered $50.00 for the club treasury and the sellers of items at the auction will collect their proceeds at the November meeting see Don Dressel, auctioneer. Apparently, some of the items were sold outside of the auction, but all went away happy. Thanks to Steve Jones, Mike DeCirbo and myself for making the auction work so well. See the comments on the first page of this newsletter.
