4 Buying Guide Helping you make the right choice To help you select the hardwood flooring that s just right for your needs today and for a long time to come we ve prepared this quick Five Step Buying Guide to lead you through Preverco s many options. 1. Rest assured that there is a type of flooring that s just right for the location and type of subfloor you have in mind. Choose from our Original TM, Enge - nius, or PreLoc TM Series. Page 8 2. The choice of flooring is first and foremost a question of ambiance, and that means appearance. So choose the species of wood you find most attractive and the grain that appeals to you most. Page 4 3. Another factor in creating an ambiance is the degree of natural color variation in the wood. Choose the grade of floor that has the appearance you like best. Page 4 4. Colors can help create a warm ambiance while personalizing your interior. Choose the stain that you prefer from the rich palette available. Page 7 5. 5 Grades This time, appearances are not deceiving! Wood is a natural product featuring a natural variation in color and knots that reflects the tree s age and history. To help consumers choose their floors, Preverco classifies boards by their personality. Preverco classifies wood in eight distinct grades based on selection criteria among the strictest in the industry. Keep your guard up! Although grade names are similar from one manufacturer to the next, descriptions are not. Be careful and don t hesitate to compare appearance. Not everyone uses the same strict classification standards. Furthermore, the percentage of total production used for better grades is generally much higher elsewhere in the industry, which affects the overall appearance of the floor. You risk disappointment should the grades of other manufacturers fail to meet your expectations. Consult our grades book to learn more about the different grades offered. Grades Clear A blend of Clear Colour variation is minor (natural colour variation of sapwood) Wood is selected for colour uniformity. Colour is lighter and more uniform in this grade. Boards > or = 12'' (305 mm) Sound knots are allowed < or = 1/8'' (3 mm) May have mineral streaks < or = 1/16'' X 2'' (2 mm X 50 mm). No stains, checks or splits. Select and Better Have been selected to preserve colour uniformity A blend of Clear and Select grades Colour variation is moderate (natural colour variation of sapwood) Wood is selected for colour uniformity. Colour is lighter and more uniform in this grade. Boards > or = 12'' (305 mm) Sound knots are allowed < or = 3/16'' (5 mm) May have mineral streaks < or = 1/16'' X 6'' (2 mm X 150 mm). No stains, checks or splits. Select An intermediate between the Select & Better and the Select Extra grades This grade is relatively uniform with a little colour variation in shade. Extreme colour variation in shade is not allowed. Boards > or = 12'' (300 mm) Select Common A blend of Select and #1 Common grades Colour variation is pronounced (natural colour variation of sapwood) Boards > or = 10'' (254 mm) Sound knots are allowed < or = 3/16'' (5 mm) For Walnut and Cherry, strips / planks containing more than 15% of sapwood (pale boards) are not allowed. Sound knots are allowed < or = 3/16'' (5 mm) May have mineral streaks length up to 150 mm. No checks or splits. Some non-natural discoloration are allowed #1 Common Natural colour variations A nice blend of natural colour variations of heartwood and sapwood. All colour variations are allowed in this grade. The wood grain is very visible with its darker colour. Boards > or = 10'' (254 mm) Unfilled pin knots up to 3/16'' (5mm) are allowed. Some non-natural discoloration are allowed Select Extra An harmonious mix between the Select & Better and the #1 Common grades A blend of roughly 60 to 70% Select & Better and 30 to 40% of #1 Common. Colour variation is pronounced, but with a distinct proportion of light boards Boards > or = 10'' (254 mm) Mineral streaks are allowed. Silver will show light beige colour boards as well as darker boards with shades of grey and / or green. Beech will show a strong contrast between brown and light beige shades. Character A nice blend of natural colour variations of heartwood and sapwood All colour variations are allowed in this grad Boards > or = 10'' (254 mm) The wood grain is very visible with its darker colour Knots up to 3/4'' filled with putty are allowed Antique Pronounced colour variations A pronounced colour variation characterizes this grade. Strips / planks containing more than 15% sapwood (light colour boards) and / or mineral streaks are allowed in this grade. Boards > or = 10'' (254 mm) Unfilled pin knots up to 3/16'' (5mm) are allowed. 4
