The request was in response to a need to comply with WAHR 005 (Work at Height Regulations 005) which requires a safe means of access to a place of work whilst protecting the roof sheet from regular

2 Case Study Worcester Bosch Boiler Plant, Worcester Objective To provide a safe, level, anti-slip means of access on Bosch s boiler manufacturing plant in Worcester. The roof type was an existing Kalzip standing seam with rooftop mounted plant. The request was in response to a need to comply with WAHR 005 (Work at Height Regulations 005) which requires a safe means of access to a place of work whilst protecting the roof sheet from regular foot traffic. Solution Latchways Walksafe approved installer company Eurosafe Solutions worked with the client to develop a specification. Eurosafe Solutions recommended that the client should install a Kalzip Walkway System. Designed in a longways and shortways format, the system was clamped to the roof using standard non-penetrative seam clamps thereby not affecting the warranty/guarantee of the roofsheet.in addition production within the manufacturing facility was unaffected during installation. The system was installed in line with Kalzip s recommended guidelines. 3 The Installation Process for Shortways Panels laid to falls NB: Typical example of shortways panels with some planks removed for clarity and items shown are not to scale mm the Connecting Bars Lay the walkway sections on the roof in the approximate configuration of the intended route. Fix the 50 x 6 x 00 mm Aluminium Joining Bars into the protruding end of the three T bearers which protrude 5 mm from the last plank. These are only screwed in one end of the panel to create the male part of the connection, the female section is not screwed to allow for thermal movement. Standing Seam Clamp Placement The Standing Seam Clamps will need to be positioned approx 600 mm apart (depends on the roof section), placed over the seam, slid into position (abutting the walkway) and tighten. 3 the Standing Seam Clamp to the Walkway Place the Retaining Bracket over the T bearer between the hatched planks of a panel and use the supplied Self-Tapping Screw to fix it to the Standing Seam Clamp. When installing a continuous run of walkway across a roof this process is repeated as detailed above, ensuring the Aluminium Joining Bars are inserted from one panel into the next. :3

Shortways to Longways Corner Corner packs consist of two extra Aluminium Joining Bars and a T bearer. As the T bearers on the longways and shortways section do not line up, an extra T bearer is supplied. Insert the Aluminium Joining Bars into the end T bearers of the shortways panel and secure using Self-Tapping Screws supplied. 3 Shortways to Longways Corner (continued) Slide the extra piece of T bearer over the protruding Aluminium Joining Bar and position this under the longways unit, ensuring that the bearer spans at least two seams. Now offer the longways walkway up to the shortways panel and interlock the outside section. 3 Alligning Longways Panel to a Shortways Panel When alligning a longways panel with a shortways panel the two are not connected merely butted up together with a 5 mm gap to allow for thermal expansion. 5 Longways Panels laid to falls NB: Typical example of longways panels with cutaway for clarity and items shown are not to scale. 5 mm gap for thermal expansion Approx 000 mm Walkway Layout Firstly identify where the walkway is to be fitted and loose lay the standard panels onto roof sheet. Positioning the Standing Seam Clamps Space out Standing Seam Clamps around 000 mm apart onto adjacent seams and lightly clamp over the seam. There is no joining mechanism for longways, just lay the next one in line with a 5 mm gap to allow for thermal expansion. the Walkway To retain the walkway onto the roof surface lay the walkway over the Standing Seam Clamps next to a T bearer. Once in position, tighten the Standing Seam Clamp onto the seam. Now position a Retaining Bracket over the T bearer between the hatched planks in line with the Standing Seam Clamps. Use the supplied Self-Tapping Screw to attach Retaining Brackets to the Standing Seam Clamps securing the walkway. Repeat the above to complete the walkway installation. NB: Extended 8mm screw drill bit required. :5

6 The Installation Process for Stepped Shortways Panels on pitched roof NB: Typical example of stepped shortways panels with some planks removed for clarity and items shown are not to scale. 3 Approx 400 mm Preparing the Front Riser Plates Position Standing Seam Clamps onto standing seam and lightly tighten. Position the Front Riser Plate onto the top of the Standing Seam Clamps and fix using Self-Tapping Screws supplied (diagonally opposite each other). Position the nd set of Standing Seam Clamp up the slope approximately the width of the step apart (approx 400 mm), repeat the Standing Seam Clamp fixing procedure and loosely fix into position. the Step to the Front Riser Plate Place one walkway step into position ensuring the Front Riser Plate is sitting against the inside of the front bearer. Place a spirit level on the walkway step to ensure the step is flat. Position the Aluminium Spreader Plate on the front T bearer of the step units and using Self-Tapping Screws supplied, fix through the Aluminium Spreader Plate into the front T bearer and secure the step unit into place. 3 the Walkway Manoeuvre the next Front Riser Plate so it butts up against the step and tighten Standing Seam Clamps onto the seams. Fix a Retainer Bracket onto the rear bearer of the foremost step and screw into the Front Riser Plate of the next step. World leaders in fall protection :6 Copyright Latchways plc 007

Approx mm 3 The Aluminium Flat Bar In the first section of walkway insert a 50 x 6 x 3000 mm Aluminium Reinforcing Bar into the front and middle bearers ensuring 00 mm remains protruding from the end to form a male function with the next panel. To the rear bearer insert the 50 x 6 x 00 mm Aluminium Joining Bar to form this male joiner. Supporting Brackets You must start at one end of the run of walkway, not in the middle. Loosely affix a pair of standing seam clamps (approximately mm apart) horizontally across the roof slope following the intended route of the walkway. 3 the Support Rail Fix the Levelling Brackets to the front Standing Seam Clamp with four Self-Tapping Screws supplied. Fix the Support Rail to the rear Standing Seam Clamp using two Self-Tapping Screws supplied. Then slide the rear Standing Seam Clamp and Support Rail to meet the Front Levelling Bracket using a spirit level to ensure the Support Rail is level and affix the Levelling Bracket with single Self-Tapping Screw supplied. :7

Now repeat the installation process as item 3. Mark here 5 the Walkway to the Support Rail Lay the walkway onto the Support Rail hooking the rear T bearer over the upper Standing Seam Clamp. Secure the walkway to the Levelling Bracket using three Self-Tapping Screws supplied. Make sure the walkway and Support Rail are aligned in such away that you can clearly see the Support Rail through the walkway as a Retaining Bracket will fix the upper end of the walkway to the Support Rail. 6 the Retaining Bracket Finally use Self-Tapping Screws supplied and Retaining Bracket to fix the walkway to the Support Rail, hooking the Retaining Bracket over the top load bearer.
