2 Mounting your Scroll Bender The scroll benders require the use of the Multi Bend System, Bend Base or the Scroller Base to operate. For use with the standard scroll bender the scroller base may be mounted on a workbench corner. For the medium and large scrollers the scroller base needs to be mounted so that 360º of movement around the scroller base is possible. The Strongman Tool Post is ideal for this purpose. Mounting on the Multi Bend System (Std Scroller mounted) Mounting on Scroller Base (Std Scroller mounted) The scrolling process works by wedging a piece of bar into the jaws of the scroller. The pin and roller (25 mm dia Die used as roller) is positioned so that it applies pressure to the material to be scrolled. This pressure forces the metal to curl around the profile of the scroller. 30

3 STANDARD SCROLLER The material is inserted between the jaws of the scroll and the roller. Be sure to keep material flat on the Bend Base, during the scrolling process. It tends to want to work its way upward. Pull the scroller handle in the direction indicated by the white arrow. Keep turning the handle in the direction indicated by the arrow. 31

4 As the Banana Shaped Scroll extension slips into position you will notice that the space between the scroller and roller decreases to such an extent that the Scroller cannot be tuned further. Back off slightly on the pressure on the handle and remove and reposition the pin and roller as shown. Continue to crank the handle until the scroll is complete. To remove the scroll --reverse the direction of travel on the handle slightly and lift the scroll out vertically (Note that a scroll can be stopped anywhere along the scroll bender profile, for example at the positions indicated by the arrows. To bend another scroll to the same size, simply place a chalk mark on the scroller at the required spot and bend the following scrolls until the material touches up against the chalk mark.) 32

5 Adjustment of the Standard Scroller To allow the standard scroller to cater for different thicknesses of bar, 2 grub screws have been added to the design. Here is how they work. The grub screw in the scroller head prevents material thinner than 5 mm from slipping out of the jaws of the scroller. Use an Allen key to tighten this grub screw tightly up to the material, and then loosen it slightly. The loosening is required to allow the scroll to be removed from the scroller upon completion. The second adjusting grub screw is placed in the Banana shaped scroller extension. This adjustment controls the shape of the scroll, by means of aligning the Scroller and the Banana shaped extension at the points indicated by the black arrows optimally for a smooth curved transition between the 2 parts of the scroller. The position of the screw is indicated by the white arrow. 33

6 This photo shows the kink in the scroll that is indicative of the adjustment screw not protruding far enough toward the inside of the scroller. For thin materials you will turn the screw clockwise until a proper scroll profile is obtained. For thicker bar turn the screw counter clockwise to obtain the correct profile. MEDIUM, LARGE & OVERSIZE SCROLLER The medium, large & oversize scrollers are fitted with a grub screw to allow smaller materials to be gripped. A piece of flat bar can also be inserted between the grub screw and the work piece to improve grip on smaller diameter work pieces. Clamp the material tightly with the screw. Once the scroll is complete an Allen Key (the kind with a ball fitting on one side) is used to undo the screw through the aperture on the top of the scroller. 34

7 SCROLLING TUBING Both the medium and large scrollers can scroll hollow square or round tube. This is particularly handy for the manufacture of light fittings or chandeliers where one is required to use hollow material to provide a pathway for the electrical conductors. The trick to scrolling tube lies in the placement of the pin and roller. Instead of placing the pin and roller as close as possible to the Scroller as with solid bar, one now places the roller as far away as possible from the scroller. This action reduces the force on the tube and so reduces the likelihood of the tube being kinked. 35
