Play With Your Food Three Games About What You Eat Spring 2011 Exhibition Prototypes This series of three analog games educates players about issues surrounding food while providing entertaining platforms for real-world interaction with others. Each game in the series focuses on a different selection of issues surrounding how players get and consume what they eat. Video Videos demonstrating how each game works in play can be found at: Food Court Frenzy Dinner Winner Play With Your Food in Exhibition All images of physical, playable prototypes in exhibition at the Sullivan Galleries, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, June Feed Them! A strategic resource-management game that models the complex factors surrounding the journey of food from production to retail outlets. 2-4 Players, Ages 12+ Laser-cut chipboard, laser printing, dyed wood A tongue-in-cheek traditional board game focused on overeating and the relationship between how much food costs and how healthy it is. Players interact with expandable silicone pants, making the experience of overeating a visual and tactile one. 2-4 Players, Ages 6+, Vacuformed ABS plastic, cast silicone, cast polyurethane plastic, laser-cut acrylic, inkjet printing An experimental game that uses the kitchen refrigerator as a board. Players use fridge magnet pieces to represent the food that goes in and out of the fridge. The game tracks time-untilspoilage and incentivizes healthier consumption through point values and self-assigned bonuses. Any number of players, All ages, Magnet sheet, inkjet printing
Play With Your Food Spring 2011 Ideation Process The prototyping process for these games concerned both physical iteration and game rule platesting/iteration, with both cycles feeding the other. Food Court Frenzy Physical prototyping included the board concept & layout, player stand form and usability, rubber pants material and usability, and food piece material and form. Feed Them! Rules iteration drove component design, with an intuitive leap bridging the playmat form to the interlocking puzzle piece form.
More Than It s Worth Spring 2011 Exhibition Piece: LOADED Nathan s work investigates physical expressions of value, reconfiguring familiar metrics by which we understand worth. The bowl shape provides a familiar lens through which we can compare the physical aspects of $20 worth of sugar to $20 worth of DVDs. - Core77 Description Exhibition Pieces Additional Info The physical totems of value are being left behind as currency becomes digital and abstract. This series of decorative bowls was made by melting and drip-casting objects of consumer value in order to reveal their material value if any remains at all. Each piece is made of $20 worth of material. Part of LOADED. Exhibited at Spazia Rossana Orlandi, Milan and School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago. More Than It s Worth has been featured by online magazine Domus and blog Core77. Prototyping in wax, plastic, and sugar done by hand. Prototyping in metal and DVDs done in partnership with Chicago Crucible LLC. The final die form was machined out of Medex via 3-axis CNC router. This wooden pattern was both used to sandcast the final die out of cast iron, and as the die for drip-casting the sugar bowl. Prototype Development Prototyping was done in quick-setting EasyFlo 120 plastic and foundry wax in order to simulate drip-casting molten metals. Final Pieces in Exhibition Drip-Cast Prototyping Each quantity of coins was melted with an oxyacetylene torch and drip-cast by hand over a cast-iron die.
LOADED Structural Design Tabletop Ideation CAD Drawings Spring 2011 Collaborative Exhibition Design Description The LOADED exhibition needed to be capable of being broken down, packed into crates, flown overseas and reassembled on site. Collaboration The final table was a collaborative effort among designers Daniel Whiteneck, Jordan Morrell, Stephen Gulau, Ryan Chorbagian, Brian Anderson, myself, and the instructors Jim Termeer and Helen-Maria Nugent. Individual My role was to design and construct the structural components of the table, as well as the shape and nature of the final table surface. CAD A digital model of the table elements was created in Rhino 3D. Rhino was used to lay out the tabletop and framing plan. Adobe Illustrator was used to create build and assembly drawings. Assembly Drawing Fabrication & Test Fitting Exhibition at Spazia Rossana Orlandi, Milan

Hand sketches, paper and cardboard models, looks-like models, digital renderings. The Essential uses a batterypowered analog mechanism to only show what you need to know. The Modern combines analog hands with a digital display, combining tradition with technology in a nod to the development of the time The Abstract features an all-digital color display that shows you the time with shapes, not words.
