John Doe Exam Page 2 Dear Joshua, Unfortunately, you earned a failing grade on this first-attempt submission. According to the Academic Policies in the Penn Foster Student Handbook, you must prepare a retake submission. Since the goal of this course is to help you improve your writing, you will continue working with your current submission, completely revising and editing it at all levels. Merely applying the instructor s corrections in grammar, spelling, or format does not show sufficient evidence that you have improved your skill level and therefore will not result in a change to your grade. Please remember you can submit your essays for review by a Smarthinking tutor before you turn in your final exams for grading. These tutors are an excellent resource you should take advantage of during your writing process. They can help you with everything from content to organization to grammar including any specific concerns you may have. You can access your tutor by going to the Help Center on your My Courses page. Your material is in need of extensive revisions. Please make use of this service. Review these textbook page references as well as Chapters and the study-unit discussions related to writing a classification and division essay. The following are key revisions you must make to ensure a passing grade on your retake. If you do not understand how to rewrite your essay in order to accomplish these goals, please contact the school. Purpose: Write to express your feelings about a particular subject to your fellow Penn Foster College students about the various effects or impacts that result of your desired topic (512). Strong thesis: State a specific thesis which includes the subject (curing cancer would be easier if researchers had better access to stem cells) and identifies your principle of classification for the various effects you will describe in the essay (423, 433, 512, 527). Possible classifications include sorting effects by the types of people or groups impacted, by the ways they are impacted, or by the consequences. Effective introduction: Draw your fellow Penn Foster students into the topic and include your thesis ( , 524). Well-developed explanations: Based on your principle of classification, develop at least one paragraph for each type of effect or subdivision. Provide specific evidence ( , 511, ). Explain each effect or division fully as you affirm/dispel assumptions ( ). Satisfying conclusion: Remind fellow students of your thesis and encourage people to adopt your view on a particular issue. Clear, logical organization: Use appropriate transitions to guide your reader (513, ). Editing and proofreading: Please include this set of instructions with your retake submission, or there may be a problem completing your evaluation. For electronic submissions, copy and paste them at the beginning of
John Doe Exam Page 3 your retake document. As part of your file name, include Retake after your last name. Then submit your retake essay for grading. Best wishes on your retake, Instructor Penn Foster College Please do not use title pages. April 9, 2016 Game-itized Introduction Foster Joshua In this paper I will be focusing on video games, their genres, play styles, pros, and cons. In no way do I wish to sway you towards a specific style, but give you the information to make your own choice towards one or more play styles, if you choose to play for yourself. Unfortunately the list of genres and their sub-genres is too large a list that is ever evolving and adding new data all the time. We will only be looking at a handful of examples. Body Video games have a simplistic history. The first video game was created by physicists in It was a simple game of tennis. Similar to the 1970s classic title known as Pong, a sports game. (aps.org/publications) Notice the term Sports. It refers to a specific genre. One of which also has sub-genres. Let s begin looking at the different games genres, and sub-genres. Commented [JC2]: There must be a heading on each page containing name, student number, exam number, page number, mailing address, and address. Try to place your information in a header as shown above. That way the information does not interrupt the flow of the writing. Please use the header function in Word. Please see your study guide. Commented [JC3]: What does this mean? What happened to the turtles? Commented [JC4]: The purpose of writing an essay is to evaluate your writing skills. This includes your ability to write complete sentences, especially topic sentences, and to develop paragraphs using those topic sentences. The use of titles or headings negates the ability to evaluate your skills in these areas. Commented [JC5]: The essay must be double-spaced. The essay must be presented in 12 point font. Electronic submission files must be named like _ Doe. Indent the first line of all paragraphs five spaces. Word count: The essay must be at least 1200 words. Commented [JC6]: Do not make announcement when writing essays. Commented [JC7]: OPENING PARAGRAPH and THESIS: The thesis must be clearly stated in your opening paragraph. The thesis must clearly identify your topic, divide or classify the topic into at least three clearly identified categories and take a clearly stated position on the topic that needs to be explained or proved. Your thesis has not fulfilled these requirements. Commented [JC8]: The source must be identified in a citation and included in the Works Cited. Commented [JC9]: Incorrect pronoun usage.
John Doe Exam Page 4 Sports games: Sports games are simulations of sports. (1) Some fictional, some offer play against other players, and others offer play against artificial intelligence. Commented [JC10]: You need to write complete sentences and paragraphs. Sub-genres: Competitive: Some sports games do not meet conventional real world sports or they mimic some of the concepts of real world sports. These games still have a competitive style of play, and scoring system. Many of these games have concepts that fictional in design, created by the developer. Racing: A sub-genre were they players competes for the best time or to beat a time limit. Usually involves vehicles or other modes of transportation. Although there are more sub-genres for not only sports games and its sub-genres but the same can be said for every game type. Sports games are particularly fun for competitive game play against friends and adaptive AI. Roleplay: Role-playing video games, historically, draw their gameplay from traditional roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. These games usually drop you in as the main character or focal point of a story. Many involve maneuvering these character(s) through an over world, usually populated with monsters, that allows access to more important game locations, such as towns, dungeons, and castles. Due to the genres roots in pen & paper roleplaying, this genre was one of the first, and is popular to this day. Sub-genres: Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG): These games, as the title entails, are games online where a large number of players from around the world can participate in together or in solo game play. It is by far the most popular genre to date. It features game play objectives and quests but involves, at times, the inclusion and help from other players to complete dungeons all on the same persistent world in real-time. The massively multiplayer concept was quickly combined with other genres. Commented [JC11]: Fragment. Commented [JC12]: Fragment. Commented [JC13]: CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS are always used in pairs, in order to show the relationship between the ideas expressed in different parts of a sentence. They join similar elements. not only but also. Commented [JC14]: Fragment. Commented [JC15]: All titles must be placed in quotation marks or italicized. Commented [JC16]: Fragment Commented [JC17]: Fragment. Sandbox RPGs: allow the player a large amount of freedom and usually contain a somewhat more open free-roaming (meaning the player is not confined to a single path restricted by rocks or fences etc.) world. Sandbox RPGs contain similarities to other sandbox games such as the Grand Theft Auto series, with a large number of interactable NPCs, large amount of content and typically some of the largest worlds to explore and longest playtimes of all RPGs due to an impressive amount of secondary content not critical to the game's main storyline. Sandbox RPGs often attempt to emulate an entire region of their setting. Action Games: utilizes hand-eye coordination, motor skills, and twitch gameplay to complete and compete in this genre. They focus usually on the protagonist, which is the player, who is in control of most of the action minus the cut-scenes. Most early video games were considered action games. Even to this day, it is still a vast genre covering a plethora of game titles that involve physical challenges. Action games have a wide verity of subgenres. Fighting games and Commented [JC18]: Fragment.
John Doe Exam Page 5 Platform games are two of the best known subgenres in the expansive list. Shooter games, however, have made a huge impact on the industry, and continues to be the top tier genre in Action Gaming. Sub-Genres: Commented [JC19]: Fragments Shooter games (or simply shooters): Players are given an extensive range of options in weapons and customization to get in to the fray, which typically takes place in a set map. Shooters usually involve violent and lethal gameplay, due primarily to weaponry used and the type of damage/death they cause opponents. In today s market some shooters have bucked the violence to bring in a new generation of player. Games such as Splatoon, have non-violent objectives, and weaponry. Shooters, aside from subgenre classifications, can be further classified by their perspective of play. First-person shooters are played within the protagonist's perspective; they often include a heads-up display (HUD) displaying key information such as the current health of the protagonist. Third-person shooters give a full body view from behind, and usually still have a HUD, and the environment is rendered from a distance. Some shooters allow for both prospective to be switched out simultaneously. Platform games (or platformers): Are set in a vertical or three-dimensional (3D) environment. Players guide a character through obstacles, jumping on platforms and battling enemies in order to advance. Donkey Kong was one of the earliest and best-known platformers (archive.org/stream/electronic_games). Today, the recipe for such games is relatively simple. Nintendo, the creators of Super Smash Bros, one of the best-selling games of all time, has released a version of their popular game giving players the ability to build their own maps, known as Super Mario Maker.(gamecubicle.com/features - supermariomaker.nintendo.com) Commented [JC20]: Incorrect citation. Commented [JC21]: Incorrect citation. Action-adventure games: Are a combination of two of the most popular and well-known genres to form its own genre. Typically featuring long-term obstacles, dungeons, combat, and skill trees. Action-adventure games tend to focus on exploration and usually involve item gathering, and simple puzzle solving, and either questing or missions, based on the setting of the game. "Action-adventure" has become a label which is sometimes attached to games which do not fit into either of its parent genres. Sub-genres: Stealth games: are a somewhat recent subgenre, referred to as sneakers or creepers. These games give action a backseat. These games tend to emphasize subterfuge and precision strikes over the more overt mayhem of shooters. Survival horror: games are intended to cause fear and panic via non-traditional game play packed with elements of horrific atmospherics, death, the undead, blood and gore. One crucial
John Doe Exam Page 6 gameplay element in many of these games is the low quantity of ammunition, or number of breakable melee weapons. Conclusion Although I barely scratched the surface, I d like to point out that the game industry and their genres are continuously evolving. One such subject is virtual reality. I propose to you to take the time to look in to video games and find the one that best fits your style and personality. Citing Internet Sources Works Cited Commented [JC22]: The material below is not presented in correct MLA format And myself. I ve played games since the age of 4. I have played every style and genre of game. I have participated in competitions. I have worked for a game supply store. I have played some of the earliest games. I live steam on twitch, a popular site where people can watch others play their favorite games as the player does commentary. I attend various game expose and keep up to date on the industry and market.
