6 Script 1. This is a generally sound response. The candidate shows a real attempt to get to grips with and comment on language features though these are not developed. Some use of relevant examples. Band 4 mark 15 6

8 Script 2. There is quite a lot of detailed analysis of language. Comments are supported by relevant quotations and are sometimes developed. The candidate has a sound understanding of the poem and deals effectively with ideas although there is some repetition of points. The response is securely within the top band. Band 5 mark 19 8

10 Script 3. The content of this response has enough substance to move it to the top of band 4. There is a recognition of the development of ideas and there is a generally sound explanation of the poem. Language points could have been more fully developed; there is enough for the response to merit a mark of 16. Band 4 mark 16 10

13 Script 4. A generally sound personal response with a generally sound explanation about the poet s craft. The candidate looks in some detail at the images created and how these affect the reading of the poem Band 4 mark 14 13

15 Script 5. There is some explanation as well as some comments which are supported by text. However, these are not developed. The response is quite narrative and is supported with relevant quotations, but these are not elaborated. Band 3 mark 12 15

17 Script 6. The response is quite brief and a bit vague. There is some relevant explanation, some use of text and an attempt to comment on language. However its brevity keeps it in lower end of the band. Band 3 mark 10 17

19 Script 7. The candidate is starting to move away from the literal meaning of the poem and there is a clear personal engagement with the text. There are some thoughtful comments on the imagery created and relevant quotations are used to support these. A mark at the top of band 4 is deserved. Band 4 mark 16 19

21 Script 8. The candidate has demonstrated a personal and original interpretation and ideas are at times supported by text. The candidate has really tried to explain the poem and there is evidence of a personal response which should be credited. Band 3 mark 11 21

22 SCRIPT S9: Script 9. This is a limited response. It is brief and the comments are generalised. There is only one specific comment and that is that the poem is set on a farm. Band 2 mark 5 22

26 Script 10. This is an interesting response. AO2 is dealt with successfully given the limitations of time and there is a focus on the question. The comparison is added on at the end and, although points are relevant, they are not really developed, nor supported by specific textual references. 29 Script 11. Overall this is a generally sound response. The explanations of Valentine are quite sound and supported by text but understanding of Song for Last Year s Wife is less secure. Nettles is not the most apt choice for comparison perhaps and the candidate does not really look at the focus of the question. Quotations are a little overlong at times but relevant. However, the AO3 strand is not as strong and more could have been said; there are few points of comparison.
