1 Week 4: Wall Art Assignment: COLLAGE CANVAS ASSIGNMENT: Create a piece of ABSTRACT collage-style wall art for a shop like Anthropologie.com or UrbanOutfitters.com for the year old female consumer. You may wish to work on two at once but please ONLY SUBMIT ONE. Often, this allows you to be more relaxed about the process. Feel free to use the Wall art recipe PDF if that is helpful to you. Subject matter: Using some of the objects you ve collected and the colors assigned to you based on your astrology, create a piece of wall art. Include a few words. Words are popular and people often connect to the piece if there are words, even if it is a few random words here and there. You must put at least one word on the piece. Include floral motifs even just one tiny floral motif will count, but I want to see something floral. Know that florals sell REALLY well. They do NOT have to be traditional in any way, and they also don t have to be the focus of the piece. Do it your own way. The retailer is always looking for a fresh take. Your art from this week could be licensed in a variety of markets besides wall art, such as cards, journal covers, bolt fabric, scrapbooking; all these markets LOVE florals. Be sure you include some kind of traditional media like paint. Paint sells much better than purely digital work for wall art. Include geometric or organic motifs, as discussed this week, to add interest and trend awareness to your piece. 1

2 Items: Either create ONE digital canvas or if you are working traditionally, use ONE physical canvas. You can work in any size you like but your piece should be square. Of course you can create more than one if you have time, but only submit your best one. You can either scan your piece in if it is good enough quality (and you have a big enough scanner) or take a photograph of it. If you usually work digitally, you may scan in your items and then work digitally to create your piece. However, this is a great week to explore paint, so I do encourage you to do so, even if it s simply making some washes on canvas or scribbles and drips. No previous training or technique is required! My artists who license their work to wall art companies work in one of the following ways (1) Illustrator: Any size (The art is scaleable.) (2) Photoshop: 300 dpi, large size such as 24 x 24 or 36 x 36 (3) Traditional media: Large size canvas such as 36 x 36 and then they send the art to the client who will take care of the professional large format scanning, or the artist will get the canvas professionally photographed or scanned. Sometimes the client will pay for you to get it professionally photographed or scanned. Check first. Presentation ideas: For the purposes of submitting your assignment, please scan in the piece, or work digitally, or take a photo of the art in bright, indirect light. Crop out the background if you wish. Submit a LOW RES jpeg (550px x 550px) to the Assignment Flickr group. Please do not submit high res images to the group. Tips: 2. This is a fabulous opportunity for you to use some of your odd pod florals from Week Art made for yourself is usually your best work. Think of what you would love to hang on your own wall or give to a friend who has really cool taste. Do NOT think about the client when you are making the piece as this may interfere with the creative process and be intimidating. 2

Please note this is just me playing around. The sky is the limit this week you can do what you like. Glue down one sheet of paper, then glue down the next, and so on. The next step after this would be to cover areas with paint, and then add the florals and words. Here s an example of working on a few paintings at once: 3

4 Note: Unlike what I show here (above) it s best to be sure that the artwork doesn t include too many 3-D elements that protrude too high. The reason for this is that it s difficult to scan, and I don t yet see manufacturers looking for that kind of work. The purpose of this photograph is simply to show you how you may wish to work on several pieces at once. Below is an example of how you can still have a flat painting using collaged elements; 4
