2 2 For Every Child "They live kilometers away from the school and take hour-long walks," says Ana Erla Mancera, 34, a grade three teacher at Sayaban Elementary School. This situation is all too common in the Philippines, where mountains and rivers isolate many communities. A sudden heavy downpour could cut school attendance in half because pathway and bridges have become impassable. This is why UNICEF works to address the obstacles that girls and boys face in school: by training teachers, providing books and teaching aids, and helping school administrators to mobilize communities to make schools better and safer for their children. Lately, it is supporting the development of self learning modules. By working together, schools and communities have tackled with creativity the challenges that affect children's learning. The student tracking system, in particular, has helped schools identify and address the causes of dropping out. In one school, some pupils would be absent for months at a time during the rainy season. The teachers discovered that the roads became flooded, cutting the pupils' access to the school. In response, school officials negotiated with local authorities to grant a lot close to school for these 10 families.
