3 Polymer Plus Ultraviolet Exposure Unit The Hardware These two machines plus your computer and laser printer will put you in the stamp business! The Jackson Polymer Plus Unit is a compact machine, designed for table-top use. A minimum amount of table or bench space is required in your shop. It operates on standard North American volt, 60 Hz. electrical current or can be built for volt, 50 Hz. power. A sturdy steel frame interior supports the Polymer Plus Exposure Unit. The stainless steel cabinet and front panel give the machine an attractive appearance and are easily cleaned with any household cleanser. A pair of ball-bearing drawer slides make inserting and removing processed materials a smooth operation. The height of each of the four supporting legs is adjustable so that the unit can be leveled to conform to your table or bench. Six high-output ultraviolet tubes create exceptional processing power, allowing for fast turn-around and consistent results batch after batch. A quick glance at the front panel exposure mode lights tells the operator when processing is complete. An electronic interval timer with 3/8" L.E.D. display controls the cycle length, automatically ending the exposure and alerting the operator with an electronic chirp. The timer is completely programmable by the use of a bit generator input knob. Ultrasonic cleaning works through the rapid release of a succession of shock waves through a water and detergent bath. These waves produce alternate compressions causing a process called cavitation which jars unexposed photopolymer from the plate. The ultrasonic action removes every bit of unexposed material, even in the centers of the smallest type characters. There is no abrasion to the surface of the plate which can remove or distort type characters, a common situation resulting from hand or mechanically washing the plate with a brush. Preparation for ultrasonic cleaning begins by mixing the washout solution. The tank is filled with ordinary tap water and detergent. The desired heat level is set and the solution warmed. The polymer plate is immersed in the solution, the timer is set and the cleaning process is completed in minutes. The same solution mixture can be used repeatedly. The preferred method is to use a personal computer and a simple "desktop publishing" software program along with a laser printer (600 dpi or greater density) for good image resolution. Copy can also be set with a film typesetting machine or be customer provided in black ink on white paper, including business cards, letterheads, logos, emblems and signatures. Customer provided copy needs to be scanned for printing by the laser printer. Expose to U.V. Light in Your Polymer Plus Exposure Unit Way If you are in the printing business and have a darkroom for preparation of negatives, make the negative just as you would for any printing job. Otherwise, you will use the Polymer Plus Unit to produce it in ordinary room light. To make a negative with the Polymer Plus Unit, the original copy must be laser printed on vellum paper. Vellum is translucent, allowing light to pass through. Simply insert our laser printer compatible vellum paper in the paper tray and print! The vellum original is placed in the Polymer Plus Unit along with a piece of "JMP Daylight Safe Negative Film." After exposure to ultraviolet light for about a minute and a half the negative film is sprayed with a water-based developer solution. Then it is swished with a soft cotton pad and rinsed with running tap water. Just like that, an exceptionally high quality negative is made. Spray on Water Based Developer Wipe Away and Dry JMP Install the Negative Attach Foam Strips and Pour Resin Apply the Substrate Stamp Die Processing Wash Out and Post Exposure The negative is placed on a glass plate that is provided with the Polymer Plus Unit. It is covered with a thin sheet of "cover film" to preserve it for future use. Air pockets that may be trapped between the negative and the cover film are pressed out with a cover film applicator. The photopolymer "resin" is a thick liquid, about the consistency of honey. It is contained over the negative by the use of "foam strips" with self-adhesive backings. The foam strips are cut to the size of the image area and attached to the cover film. Then the resin is poured over the negative. A rigid plastic sheet of "substrate" is placed over the resin. The substrate will bond to the photopolymer resin, providing stability for the finished stamp dies. Another glass plate is put on top of the substrate. Special aluminum clamps hold everything together for the exposure cycles. The glass assembly is inserted into the exposure drawer. "Back exposure" will be the first cycle. These first seconds of exposure to ultraviolet light will bond the substrate to the polymer resin. Then the glass plates are turned over and cycled for "face exposure." It is during face exposure that UV light penetrates the clear portions of the negative and raised stamp printing characters are created. Polymer resin that has been covered by the dark portions of the negative is still in liquid form while the exposed portions are now solid. The unexposed liquid resin is washed away in the PolySonic Washout Unit. It is during this washing process that the printing portion of the stamp die gets its raised appearance. A "post exposure" step hardens the stamp printing characters, preserving their fine detail. Post exposure is accomplished by submerging the stamp die under water in the Polymer Plus Unit's post exposure pan and cycling for another few minutes. When the stamp die has dried, a fine layer of powder is applied to remove any tack. After some practice the entire process of negative production, pouring resin, exposure cycles and washout requires about 15 minutes.

5 Assembling the Finished Products Now the individual stamp printing dies are cut apart with a pair of scissors and "mounted." Mounting is the process of attaching a stamp die to a hand stamp mount or a convenient self-inking frame. All of our mounts include a self-adhesive tape strip on the base for easy attachment of your photopolymer stamp die. Traditional Stamp Mount Traditional mounts can be provided in either of two forms. Ordinarily they are supplied in 18" length strips that are cut to the length of the stamp die with a small table saw or band saw, then drilled with a small drill press for insertion of the handle. The handle is driven into the hole with the assistance of a rubber mallet, a small hammer or a handle insertion press (optional machine that we can provide). We can pre-cut and drill traditional mounts to your specifications or provide an assortment of various pre-cut and drilled sizes. Self-Inking Stamp Selecta Mounts eliminate the need for cutting and drilling. Select the appropriate base for the stamp from the 63 sizes that are offered. Twist the handle into the center hole that is molded in the top of the base. Very simple and stylish. The Self-Inking option is more profitable for you as a stamp maker and more convenient for your customer. Four frame sizes are offered. Flip the stamp over and press on the edges to expose the die plate. Drop the die into place on the die plate and begin repetitive stamping without the need for a stamp pad. Regardless of the style of mount that is being used, an image is stamped on a piece of indexing paper and attached to the mount for quick and easy identification by the user.
