Cooking Cookies Girl scouts all over the USA have annual cookie sales to raise funds. Why not have a go in your meeting? To save time in shorter meetings, pre make the cookies and allow the girls to do the rolling and cutting. Daisy Craft The youngest Girl Scouts in the USA are called Daisy Scouts, they are in kindergarten and grade 1 (approximately 5-6 years old). Why not make your own daisy to help you think about all the things you can do to keep your promise. Add your ideas to the petals. You could look back at these and see how many you have done in the last week. To make about 12 cookies you will need: 100g caster sugar 100g butter 1 egg Half a teaspoon of vanilla essence 175g plain flour 175g milk or plain chocolate chips Preheat oven to 180c or gas mark 4 Method 1. Grease two baking trays 2. Mix sugar and butter in a large bowl until smooth and creamy 3. Break the egg in a small bowl, mix with a fork, add vanilla essence and then add to the main bowl 4. Sift in the flour and stir everything well. 5. Stir in 100g of the chocolate drops 6. Use a tablespoon to put the mixture on the trays and flatten each one with the back of a fork 7. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate drops 8. Bake for minutes until pale brown and still slightly soft in the middle 9. Leave to cool on a wire rack Girl Scouts in the USA Daisy Scout K & Grade 1 (approx 5-6 yrs) Brownie Grades 2 & 3 (approx 7-8yrs) Junior Scout Grades 4 & 5 (approx 9-10yrs) Cadet Scout Grades 6, 7 & 8 (approx 11-13yrs) Seniors Grades 9 & 10 (approx 14-15yrs) Ambassadors Grades 11 & 12 (approx 16-17yrs)
USA Door Hanger The USA is famous for its stars and trips, why not have a go at the sparkly door hanger. You could use craft foam or cardboard. Foam stars can be bought at craft shops for decoration.
Paper Beads Beads are big news in Africa. They were traditionally used as currency and as a sign of wealth and status. Cut triangles of paper about 5cm at the base and 7cm high. Either colour the paper or use wrapping or coloured paper. Cut a piece of plastic straw 5cm long and put a little bit of white glue on it. Place it on the wide end of the triangle and roll it up to form a bead. String the beads on bright coloured yarn, string or wool. You could use pasta to make necklaces with younger girls, or thread bought beads to make bracelets. Teddies Aged 4 1/2 to 7 Mbube Mbube Game This game uses the Zulu word Mbube, pronounced Mboo-bay. In this game the girls help the lion (or mbube) to catch the impala (a dear like creature). The girls stand in a circle, with two girls blindfolded. One girl is the mbube and the other is the impala. The two blindfolded girls are moved around the inside of the circle so they do not know where they are. The mbube has to catch the impala. As she moves nearer to the impala the girls chant mbube louder and lounder, as she moves away the chanting gets quieter. Both players must stay inside the circle. If the lion fails to catch her in a set time then a new lion is chosen. If the lion catches the impala then a new impala is chosen. Brownies Aged 7 to 10 Guides Aged 10 to 14 Apartheid Older girls could research what Apartheid was in South Africa. They could take part in a balloon debate on the topic of all girls in South Africa get an equal opportunity. They could research Nelson Mandela or Desmond Tutu and find out how they brought about change. Rangers Aged 14 to 25
Teddy Bear Craft Teddies are the youngest group in South Africa, why not make this craft inspired by them. Use the template to make a teddy bear which can move! Use a split pin through each of the x when assembling it, this way the legs and arms will move. The muzzle, ear and vest pieces should be stuck onto the bear
Tenderfoot Aged 5-6 years Brownie Scout Aged 7-9 years Junior Girl Scout Aged 9-12 years Senior Girl Scout Aged years Ranger Girl Scout Aged years Sushi In an emergency The Japanese love fish! Like us they live on an island. Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish, why not bring some to your meeting place and have a go at eating them. If you are feeling more adventurous you could buy Sushi ingredients in your local supermarket. If you can not find sushi rice over cook long grain till it goes all sticky and allow to cool. If raw fish isn t your thing then try tinned tuna, cooked chicken or vegetables. Japan suffers from a range of natural disasters including earthquakes, volcanoes, typhoons and tsunamis. On your own make a list of 10 things you would save from your house in an emergency if you only have 5 minutes to pack. Now get into your Patrol/six or other group and come up with a group list. You all need to decide on a final 6 items, with reasons. Everyone needs to agree on the final list. As a guider you might choose to give them a time limit to work on this. What was picked? Why? How did you decide? Chop Stick Relay Like other parts of Asia Pacific, chop sticks are used to eat meals with. Split your girls into teams. Each team has a set of chop sticks. At one end of the meeting place put a large bowl containing sweets, at the other end an empty bowl for each team. The girls line up by the empty bowl. The girls take it in turns to race and collect a sweet and return it to their groups bowl. You could allocate points for different sweets (smarties are more difficult than haribo) or just count the sweets collected!
Paper Cranes In 1945 an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, this killed many thousands and left many more with the lasting damage of radiations. Sadako Sasaki was 2 when the bomb was dropped and was living 2km away from the drop zone. Although she survived the bomb, she developed leukaemia due to the radiation. There is an ancient Japanese story that who ever folds a thousand paper cranes can have any wish granted by the Gods. A popular version is that she folded 644 before her death and that her friends made her the remaining. A statue stands of her in the park in Hiroshima to remind people of the need for peace. Why not fold your own paper crane and use it to form reflections during your meeting on the subject of peace.
Pizza Perfect! Why not have a pizza making party! If you have a long meeting you can make your own dough or buy ready made bases and add your own toppings! Its an easy way to get a bit of Italian flavour into the meeting. Pisa is famous for its leaning tower. In your patrols / sixes / groups see who can make the highest tower. Each team is given a bag of marshmallows and a packet of spaghetti. You might choose to give the teams a time limit. Toppling Towers Italian Girl Scouts There are two associations in Italy. The Association of Italian Catholic Guides and Scouts and National Corps of Italian Boy and Girl Scouts. The Catholic Association is the largest. It has three sections. Groups can be boys only, girls only or mixed Cerchio aged 8 to 11 - the girls are called coccinelle meaning ladybird Reparto aged 12 to 16 - the girls are called guides Communia Rovers-Scoite aged the girls are called Rangers Ladybird Drive Rather like a beetle drive. You will need a dice for each team. Teams can either draw a ladybird as a group or each girl can do their own. You need to throw a 6 to start. 6 = body 5 = head 3 = legs (need 6) 2 = eyes (need 2 and must have a head) 1 = antenna (need 2 and must have a head)
Beautiful masks Each year Vienna holds a famous masked event, the stunning masks are famous the world over. Why not use the templates below to create your own masks in the meeting place. If you fancy craft shops sell paper Mache or plastic masks which you could decorate. Otherwise use the templates to create masks out of card or craft foam.
Girl Scouts of Egypt Baraem (Rainbow) aged 5-7 Zahrat (Brownie) aged 6-11 Morshidat (Guide) aged Gawalat (Ranger) aged 16+ It s a girls only organisation. Sandpaper Art Much of Egypt is desert, why not be inspired by sand! Each girl uses sandpaper to create her own desert image. Wax crayons work best when producing your grainy art! Mummy Race Get the girls into groups and give each team a toilet roll. Give each team 5 minutes to make a member of the team into a mummy. Give points for coverage, breakage of the paper and artistic interpretation. Mini Mummies Mummies were often buried with all their treasure, this simple craft allows you to keep your treasures in a mummy! Use either empty toilet / kitchen roll tubes or crisp tubes (this will allow for a lid). Tutam Says Its important to remember to follow the instructions of the Pharaoh. So why not play Simon says with a twist, this time its Tutam says You can make the actions Egyptian themed like build the pyramid, ride the camel or swim the Nile. Paint the tube black (if using a crisp tube mix the paint with PVA glue to help it stick). Then add the eyes about 2/3rds up. Cut white crape paper into strips about 2cm wide. Start at the bottom of the tube, and secure the paper using a blob of glue. Wrap the crepe paper around and around until the top and secure. You can add features using bits of card or foam, and decorate.
Pyramid Boxes This template can be used to make pyramid shaped boxes. These can be decorated and taken home by the girls. You might want to make some tasty treats to go inside or decorate it with hieroglyphs. The girls should decorate their boxes before folding. The dotted line shows where to score. You could hole punch each end and then tie with a ribbon rather than gluing.
