1 Bookworm Mobile This darling dangler is sure to inspire your youngsters during National Children s Book Week, celebrated annually during the week before Thanksgiving! 1 wire clothes hanger one 12" x 18" sheet of light-colored construction paper one 9" x 12" sheet of green construction paper construction paper scraps hole puncher 5 pieces of yarn in varied lengths 5 copies of the book pattern on page 23 crayons Little House in the Big Woods Ramona the Pest Charlotte s Web 1. Fold the large sheet of construction paper over the bottom of the hanger. Wrap it around the hanger until it is covered. Glue the paper in place; then trim it as needed. 2. Cut six 3-inch circles from the green construction paper and them to the paper on the hanger to form a bookworm. 3. Cut worm features from the construction paper scraps and them in place. 4. Write a different favorite book title on each book pattern and draw a picture from each story on the corresponding pattern. Then cut out the patterns. 5. Punch five holes along the bottom of the hanger. 6. Punch one hole at the top of each book pattern. 7. Tie each book to the hanger using a length of yarn. Explain to your youngsters how to locate books on a library shelf. Challenge each youngster to locate each book he illustrated on his mobile.
2 Book Box Take a peek at these nifty book boxes! 1 discarded shoebox with lid tempera paint paintbrush X-acto knife (teacher use only) construction paper scraps crayons or markers Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel Frog and Toad are special friends. They do everything together. One time Toad gave Frog a very nice jacket. What great friends! by Andy Language Arts Have each child write the title, author, and a short summary of the book on a lined index card. Have him his card to the top of his box. Place the completed projects in your reading center for all to enjoy! 1. Paint the outside of the shoebox and its lid. Let the paint dry completely. 2. Use the X-acto knife to cut a twoinch flap along each long side of the shoebox and in the lid. Cut a one-inch square hole in one end of the box. (This step should be done by the teacher.) 3. Create a scene from a favorite book by cutting scenery and character details from the construction paper scraps. Glue them inside the box facing the end with the oneinch hole. 4. Add additional details with crayons or markers. 5. Put the lid on the box and view the scene through the one-inch hole. Cynthia Holcomb Mertzon, TX
3 Classy Bookmark Motivate your youngsters to read with these classy bookmarks! one 3" x 11 1 / 2 " piece of wallpaper decorative or regular hole puncher 3 1 / 2 " x 6" piece of colored construction paper 12" length of ribbon or yarn 1. Fold the wallpaper in half (printed side out). 2. Place the construction paper inside the folded wallpaper and the wallpaper onto both sides. 3. Punch a hole near one end. 4. Thread the ribbon through the hole and tie the ends as shown. Writing Invite your students to use their bookmarks while reading their favorite books. Challenge each youngster to place his bookmark at a stopping point near the end of his story. Have him write a prediction of the story s ending. 4 Student-Made Stickers Challenge your youngsters to make these yummy stickers to go with a selected topic or season! 1 copy of the sticker patterns on page 24 crayons access to adhesive mixture (mix together 4 envelopes unflavored gelatin and 2 cups water) small shallow dish paintbrush Math Invite each student to sort his stickers by design, size, or shape. 1. In advance, prepare the adhesive by heating the water and gelatin mixture over medium heat until the gelatin is dissolved. Let it cool and pour into small dishes. (The teacher should perform this step.) 2. Use crayons to draw seasonal designs on the sticker patterns. 3. Paint the mixture onto the back of the sticker sheet. Let it dry completely. 4. 5 Election Day Pencil Wrap Jazz up any pencil with this patriotic pencil wrap! 1 new red, white, or blue sharpened pencil small star paper punch or small star stickers 3 / 4 " x 11" strip of red, white, or blue paper (different from pencil color) clear tape 1. Punch evenly spaced stars along the paper strip or apply stickers. 2. Tape one end of the paper at an angle near the eraser end of the pencil. 3. Wind the paper strip around the pencil until you reach the end. 4. Trim the end of the strip to an appropriate length. 5. Tape the end in place. Social Studies Invite your students to participate in a mock election. Select a topic for discussion, such as The cafeteria should serve only pizza. Involve students in the discussion. Then provide a ballot for each child. Have him use his Election Day pencil to mark his choice on the ballot. Then count the votes to determine the winning choice. VaReane Gray Heese Springfield, NE

Each day invite a different nominee to state why she thinks she would make a good classroom helper. Throughout the week, have your students wear their badges as reminders to vote. At the end of the week, have each youngster vote for a classroom helper. 1. Color and cut out the badge pattern. 2. Decorate the badge with star stickers. 3. Glue the pipe cleaner around the outside edge of the lid. 4. Glue the badge atop the lid and pipe cleaner. 5. Fold the ribbon as shown and it to the back of the lid. 6.
