3 Chinese New Year Flip Flap Book Project Thank you for purchasing my Chinese New Year Flip Flap Book Project. I hope you enjoy implementing it in your classroom. To begin this unit, print out 6-10 copies of the Chinese New Year Travel Brochure. The travel brochure has a front and a back and will be tri-folded after you print it double-sided. I printed my travel brochures on matte photo paper which really made the colors pop! I laminated the travel brochures so that I can use them from year to year. If you want to make blackline copies of each brochure for the students, you can do that as well, just print in grayscale on your copy machine. I will complete this project in two or three days. You can have your students partner read or read the travel brochure independently. When I have my students partner read, they must always share something they learned orally with their partner. After they read the travel brochure, they will then begin to work on the flip flap book while referring back to the travel brochure for assistance. I will begin this unit by showing my students and entirely completed flip flap book (without the writing done) so that they can see the finished project and have an idea of what it will look like when it is completed. I will also show them step-by-step HOW to cut out each page of the book so that they understand to cut ON the gray dotted line around each shape. Once your students create ONE flip flap book, they will be asking for more! It is that fun!

4 Presentation of Flip Flap Books GOOD TIP: If you plan on putting these flip-flap books up on your bulletin board and it drives you a little crazy that the pages open up and DO NOT stay flat, I have and EASY FIX for that. Instead of stapling it on the far left, put ONE or TWO STAPLES at the top of EACH letter so that the letters flip UP instead of over to the left like a book. This will allow your flip-flap books to stay flush with your bulletin board VIDEO TUTORIAL If you would like to see a video tutorial of how to create and assemble my Flip-Flap Books, check out my blog at Please Note: You will need LEGAL SIZED PAPER for THREE of the letters in the flip-flap book. The letters C, I, N, and E (1) will print on an 8 ½ x 1 1 pieces of copy paper. However, the letters H, E (2), and S will need LEGAL SIZED PAPER (8 ½ x 14). Most home printers can accommodate this size paper. Please see the attached pictures of the finished project.

5 Printing Instructions Each letter will be printed on 8 ½ x 1 1 OR 8 ½ x 14 copy paper. When you are printing the letters H, E (2) and S, please note you MUST change the PRINTER SETTINGS in TWO places. First, change the PAPER SIZE to legal. Then, you must change the PRINTER SETTINGS as well to legal. If you only change ONE setting, the letters will NOT ALIGN correctly. You must change the settings in both places for each letter to align correctly in your flipflap book. When you are printing, print the landscape pages first and click the landscape button on the printer settings. Then print the portrait pages and click the portrait button. Do not let your printer choose this option for you. Do it manually. When you are printing the Travel Brochure, print one side and then re-insert the page into your printer to print on the back. Cut out the small white portion of the paper under the tab and then laminate it for durability.

17 The following pages must be used in future years. I have included an updated Chinese New Year brochure (back only) with the correct dates for the Chinese New Year in 2017 and I have also included the H dragon page with the 2017 and 2018 years as well.
