Consider a press lock for quick and easy access, style, and security. They are easy to apply and so professional! Just follow the tutorial below to see how this hardware is attached!

2 PAGE 2 What are the parts of a Press Lock? Before getting started, let s familiarize ourselves with the parts of this lock. The press lock is meant to be installed on the flap of your project with a pronged bar. The base plate is designed to be installed on the body or base of the project; the flat washer with holes anchors the base plate and is hidden between the lining and the exterior : Each lock set includes Press Lock, Base Plate with prongs, Pronged Bar, and Washer. 3 PAGE 3 Instructions Supplies: Your project Heavy Weight Iron-On Interfacing about 4 square Dritz Press Lock (#718-38) Dritz Marking Pencil Sharp Small Scissors Dritz Fray Check Plastic Canvas (optional) BEFORE APPLYING THE LOCK: Read through this tutorial and your pattern instructions before starting so you can plan the best order for installing your lock. Cut out your project, choosing the position of the lock in advance. Projects vary and so may the construction order. Because the washer and prongs of the base plate need to be hidden beween the outer fabric and the lining, we give a general sewing order. For simplicity we have drawn the project as a bag. Follow the instructions for your project and use the lock instructions at the appropriate time. Since a press lock gets pushed and pulled when in use, we call for heavy iron-on interfacing as well as suggesting plastic canvas for additional reinforcement. Prepare the Flap Your pattern instructions probably call for an interfaced flap. Add a second layer of interfacing to the flap where the lock will attach. Cut the lock interfacing about 1 1/2 wide x 1 high. Place it glue side down on the wrong side of the fabric, flush to the seam line. If you have interfaced the entire flap, fuse this piece on top of the original interfacing, following package directions Complete the flap following pattern directions. 1. Wrong side of flap fabric

4 PAGE 4 Apply the Press Lock Push the press lock onto the edge of the flap 3. in the desired position Use a marking pencil to mark each hole. 5. Remove the lock and use an awl or tiny sharp scissors to cut through the marked holes. Carefully cut through all flap layers. 5. Put Fray Check 6. on the edge of the cut holes to prevent raveling. 6. Stops Fraying on Fabric! DANGER! FLAMMABLE. MAY CAUSE EYE IRRITATION. Keep away from sources of ignition. Do not smoke. Do not get in eyes. Read back panel FL OZ (22 ml)

5 PAGE Apply the Base Fuse a small square of interfacing to the 9. wrong side of the base fabric where the base lock position is planned. If possible leave the lining open so that the back of the base plate can be accessed. This also allows you to conceal the prongs. 10. Slide the press lock back onto flap, aligning holes. Push the pronged bar through the front holes at the top of the press lock, through the holes in the flap and out the holes at the back of the lock. Fold the prongs inward toward the center of the lock to secure. Insert the press lock into the base plate. Fold the flap into position on the bag Wrong side of flap Press the base plate against the fabric of the bag to make indentations. Use a marking pencil to mark each indentation. Right side of bag TIP: Plan position of base plate carefully. Once holes are snipped you cannot change the position of the lock

6 PAGE 6 The base plate must be straight. Use a 12. ruler to double check the position of your 12. marks; then position the base plate to check again before cutting. Use a sharp tiny scissors to cut a hole at each indentation. Put Fray Check on the holes to prevent raveling. Be sure to only cut through outer fabric. NOTE: Holes are cut through all layers except the lining. If possible, leave lining in tact to conceal the prongs. When base plate is attached, hand stitch the lining closed. OPTIONAL PLASTIC CANVAS: For extra strength add a layer of plastic canvas between the interfacing and the washer. Cut the plastic canvas slightly smaller than the interfacing. Position it over the prongs, cutting the canvas where prongs touch the canvas. Attach the washer and fold down the prongs as in Step 13. Wrong side of fabric Stops Fraying on Fabric! DANGER! FLAMMABLE. MAY CAUSE EYE IRRITATION. Keep away from sources of ignition. Do not smoke. Do not get in eyes. Read back panel. 13. Interfacing Optional Plastic Canvas Plastic Canvas Push the prongs through the holes from right to wrong side. If you are using the optional plastic canvas, position it now. Place the washer over the prongs. Firmly press the prongs toward the center of the washer to secure. Finish your project by pinning and stitching the lining closed. 14.
