4 Theme: My Community and Me Topics: Trees/Orchards/Apples Duration: One Week Approach: Familiar Song Teacher-Directed Activities Creative-Combination Activities The first in this series of big books is part of an apple unit. Quite a few apples will be needed for the activities, especially if you have double sessions each day. If it is not against your school s policy, you may wish to send a note home asking that each child bring an apple to class. This cuts down the cost for you and usually provides a nice variety of apples. It is always interesting to compare and contrast the different types of apples. You can also inform parents that any extra fruit will be used for snacks. Warning: Before serving anything to eat, ask parents if their children have any food allergies or dietary restrictions. At the end of the unit, there are two parent letters (pages 44 and 45). One can be used to request apple donations and parent volunteers. If you promote parental involvement in your classroom, their help with these books will be a welcome addition. The other letter informs parents that you are having a Red Day as suggested in the Additional Activities (page 35). This letter has a space for you to write the date on which you plan to have that special day. The open-ended format allows you to use the letter for other units that target specific colors. On the following pages you will find an explanation outlining the steps for setting up and implementing a child-created big book curriculum, beginning with the Apple Tree book. Other big books follow the same pattern and principles. Once you get the hang of making these child-created big books, you and your students may wish to personalize the topics. Factored into the framework of this big book curriculum are some timesaving suggestions for how to make bulletin boards that require little or no effort. Apple Tree Way up high in the apple tree, (Hold arms overhead.) Two red apples smiled at me. (Hold out two fingers.) I shook that tree as hard as I could. (Pantomime shaking.) Down came the apples. Mmm, very good. (Rub stomach.) #2311 A Year Full of Themes 22 Teacher Created Resources, Inc.

5 Making the Book COVER PAGE Activity: Make cover pages. Setup: For the duration of this unit, set up easels for free painting. Take a stack of red construction paper (at least one piece per child) and cut a circle from the center of each sheet. The circle should be approximately a 6 7" (15 18 cm) in diameter. If you prefer and have the time, you can cut out an apple shape rather than circle. Be sure to save these cutouts since they will be used for page four of the Apple Tree book (page 28). Directions: The children may paint on the red paper using any color. These sheets will be their cover pages. PAGE 1 (PART 1) Text: Way up high in the apple tree, Activity: Make apple trees, using plastic scouring pads and green tempera paint. Setup: Prepare a discovery table by setting out some magnifying glasses and plastic or paper plates. Set up two art tables. Cover one of these tables with several layers of white butcher paper. Place a stack of large white construction paper on the other table. Pour green paint into some containers. Cake pans, pie tins, or plastic containers work well for this. Set out several plastic scouring pads. The scouring pads give a great texture and print for this particular activity. Provide some brown crayons and/or large brown markers for students to draw their tree trunks. As an alternative, you can have the children use glue and tree trunks that you have already cut from brown construction paper. Introduction: At circle time, sing or act out the Apple Tree song/fingerplay. Tell the children they will be creating a book based on this song/fingerplay. Discuss apples. Compare/contrast different types of apples. Give each child some apple slices to taste. Warning: Remember to ask parents if their children have any food allergies or dietary restrictions. Discuss topics such as texture, taste, the sound of apples being eaten, and favorite ways of eating apples. Place some seeds, apple peels, and chunks of apple on the plates at the discovery table. Ask the children to guess what will happen to the pieces of apple if they are left out for a long time. Write down their predictions, and keep their hypotheses on or near the discovery table. While working on this unit, ask students to observe the changes exhibited by the pieces of apple. Take time to discuss the children s findings. Teacher Created Resources, Inc. 23 #2311 A Year Full of Themes

6 PAGE 1 (PART 1, cont.) Making the Book (cont.) Directions: Point out that you have prepared two art tables, one covered with butcher paper and the other set up with a stack of large white construction paper. Explain that the table with construction paper is for making books. Point out to students that they will be painting on the construction paper. Show them how to place the paper so it is laid out the long way. Tell them they are using the color green because this will become part of their apple trees. Explain that for children who wish to continue painting after doing their book pages or those who would like to paint but do not want to make a book, there is another table set up with large sheets of butcher paper. When the top sheet is completely covered with paint, simply lift that sheet off, and the next sheet is ready to be painted. At the bookmaking table, the children can draw or color their own tree trunks or they can glue precut trunks onto the bottom part of their papers. Once this is done, they can make their scouring pad prints to put leaves on their trees. Very little explanation or direction is needed for the painting activity. There is no right or wrong way to make this artwork, and the children will enjoy experimenting with the scouring pads. Timesavers: 1. Save at least one of these painted pieces of butcher paper for a child-created bulletin board. 2. The other sheets, once dry, can be cut up. Use some of these scraps to precut 2'' (5 cm) leaves. One leaf per child is sufficient. Save the leaves for page four of the Apple Tree book (page 28). 3. Send home some of the remaining scraps and place the rest at an art table. The children will love using their imaginations to make different creations out of these scraps. PAGE 1 (PART 2) Activity: Paint red dots to make apples. Setup: Pour some red tempera paint into several small containers. Place by these containers any item(s), such as sponge hair rollers, that will leave small round apple prints. If you prefer, the children can make the prints using the tips of their index fingers or thumbs. Directions: After the treetop scouring pad prints described above are dry, the children can begin printing the red apples on the green paint. As they are printing, take advantage of the opportunity to review colors, shapes, sizes, spatial relationships, and concepts such as few and many. Alternative: Instead of painting, stickers that are red dots can be used to make the apples. #2311 A Year Full of Themes 24 Teacher Created Resources, Inc.

7 PAGE 2 (PART 1) Text: Two red apples smiled at me. Activity: Make apple prints with real apples. Making the Book (cont.) Setup: Bring out the large piece of butcher paper covered with green scouring pad prints. Place it on an art table. On another table, set out large green sheets of construction paper. On both tables, place some shallow containers with red tempera paint. Introduction: Review the Apple Tree song/fingerplay. Ask the children if they remember painting their apple trees. Bring out a few samples of the tree pages completed for page one of their books (pages 23 24). Remind children that when their books are finished, this page will read, Way up high in the apple tree. Tell children that today they will be creating the next page. Ask them if they can guess what the next page will read. Help them to conclude that the next page states Two red apples smiled at me. Show them an apple that has been cut in half from the top, where the stem is, to the bottom. Explain to students that they will be making apple prints. A fraction lesson can follow as you slice an apple in half. Additional apples will be needed for this activity, depending on how many children will be printing at one time. Directions: On both tables, place the apple halves facedown in the containers of red paint. The children can make red apple prints on the butcher paper in an undirected activity. You may wish to save this sheet to cover a bulletin board. The activity at the other table should be teacher directed with the lesson focusing on counting to two. Invite students to make two apple prints anywhere on the construction paper. As the children make their prints, reinforce positional words by describing where they are placing their apple prints. For example, you might point to one student s prints and say, You made one apple print at the top of your paper and another at the bottom. Depending on the interest level and attention span of the children, you may wish to take this language exercise a step farther by stating, The apple print at the top of the paper is on the right side, and the one at the bottom is on the left side.
