1 Art and Culture Center/Hollywood Distance Learning Integrated Art Lesson Title: Description and Overall Focus: Upcycled Origami Five Star Ornament Friday, December 9, 2016 at 9:30am 10:15am This project will allow students to learn how to create five volumetric (3-dimensional) stars from flat media, based on the Japanese folding art of Origami and simple geometry. Students will also explore the idea of recycled materials and mixed media in contemporary art. Length of Lesson 45 minutes 1 hour Grade Range Elementary School Objective(s) Students will learn about the ancient practice of origami paired with the contemporary movement of utilizing recycled materials to create art. Students will learn how to use paper folding techniques to create 3-D ornaments from repurposed paper. Materials: PLEASE NOTE: Some materials must be acquired/prepared before the lesson. Please collect colored papers: magazine and catalog pages, wrapping paper, construction paper scraps, foil, wax paper, vellum, or anything colorful and foldable. Teacher Materials: Paper punch Colored paper suggested types: magazine pages, newspaper, construction paper, wrapping paper, foil, etc. Student Materials: Markers Liquid glue and/or glue sticks String, yarn, or twine (or ribbon) Scissors Introductory activity Core activity Students will learn a brief history of the art of origami and its origins. They will see examples of recycled media used to create beautiful works of art. Students will learn the methods used to create a 3-D object from a 2-D medium, beginning with base folds and cuts using simple geometry of the four-, five-, and six-pointed star. They will then proceed by folding to create volume. The origami
2 Core activity (cont.) Closure activity Assessment Teacher follow-up idea Student follow-up idea Book/Web references works will be continued in stages, until there are five complete ornaments. Students will display their work so that we may comment on/critique the work, its formal qualities and interest due to reused media. Students will have learned about the origin of origami, how folding techniques work to create volumetric and dimensional form, and how reuse is a legitimate method of creating art. The classroom teacher can use the websites below to present more information surrounding the artistic world of Japanese paper arts: origami (folding), kirigami (cutting), and chigiri-e (tearing), as well as to present additional contemporary artistic ideas. Students can continue to create progressively sophisticated works of art based on upcycling materials. 3 Origami Origami comes from the Japanese words ori meaning "folding", and gami meaning "paper", which is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. It started in the 17th century and was popularized outside of Japan in the mid-1900s. It has since then evolved into a modern art form. Paper Paper is used to fold origami. The only requirement of the folding medium is that must be able to hold a crease. However, most Japanese origami papers are very beautiful, full of patterns or have very bright and vibrant colors. Sometimes foil papers are used to give a shiny appearance. In many countries, artists like to use folded money for the interesting designs it has, or for the thickness of the paper itself. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. The sculpture can also be considered kinetic as it is often movable. The very best part of making origami is that it is a fun and creative way to make sculptural art. The number of basic origami folds is small, but they can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. The best known
4 origami model is probably the paper crane. Upcycled Art from While much of the world may not be at all familiar with the idea of upcycling as a way of life, the artistic community has long been a proponent of "something from nothing." By creating works out of waste, artists are showing the beauty that is present in the most mundane of things or that one man's trash is another man's treasure. Artists are also avoiding spending money on costly supplies. These individual efforts show how we can separate ourselves from the waste cycle and can exist alongside zero-waste living. It also shows how we can be very, very creative!
5 Portrait made from Junk Mail by Sandhi Schimmel Gold, from June , The five star origami forms to be made during this lesson will all begin from rectilinear pieces of paper.
