1 Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Distance Learning Integrated Art Lesson Title: Description and Overall Focus: Love Bug Gratitude Rocks Students will learn about the three kinds of rocks and the Florida Love Bugs and how they cause problems for motorists. They will also be eposed to the art of Lin Wellford and her famous painted rocks. Length of Lesson Grade Range Sunshine State Standards Objective(s) Materials: PLEASE NOTE: Some materials must be acquired prior to this lesson 45 min. 1 hour Elementary (see attached) Students will take rocks and paint them to create whimsical: Love Bug Gratitude Rocks to give to their secret valentines. 1 plump round and smooth rock per student (about the size of a 2-3 around 1 picture of the love bug and the drawing instructions White tempera paint for the base coat (Adding a few drops of liquid soap helps the paint stick better) Red, orange, blue, yellow and black tempera paint Small containers for washing out their brushes Fine and medium point brushes Pencil and an eraser Paper plate for miing colors Paper towels for clean-up Optional: Cardboard heart boes to place their rocks in Copy of Gratitude Rock Information Introductory activity The first part of this lesson will epose students to the three kinds of rocks and what determines their differences. They then will see some eamples of the work by artist Lin Wellford Core activity Students will begin painting a thin base coat of white on their rocks in order to draw down the parts of the Love Bugs. They will then use the pencil to draw down the shape of the bug (including the antennae, the face, wings, eyes and smile. Using the color they choose, they will begin by painting the body and the face of the bug. Students will then paint the underside body of the bug black as well as the pupils of the eyes.
2 Using the finer brush, students will then paint the antenna, the detail of the face (including the smile) and the dots on its wings. They will complete the bug by painting in the hearts on the antennae. Closure activity Assessment As time permits, students will be selected to come forward and share their finished projects and their artistic thought process with other program participants. Students will have learned about creating art from common objects found in their environment and about the rocks that formed this earth. They will also have talked about the Florida Love Bugs problem for motorists and have learned how to build up each others self esteem by making positive comments to each other. They will also learn about gratitude and how these rocks can help others remember what they have as precious items in their life.
