1 Westminster Christian Academy 8th Grade Summer Reading th grade Summer Reading 2016 WEBSITE LINK The online review form and other information about the assignment can be found at: Summer Reading Requirements As we work together with families to create lifelong learners, Westminster Christian Academy expects that our students will continue reading throughout the summer months. In working towards this goal, over the summer all incoming eighth grade students will be required to read two books they have not previously read. Students must choose books from the attached reading list or from the Westminster 100 list. It s very important that students enjoy their book(s); therefore, we encourage them to take the time to find a book they love. Step #1 Step #2 Read any two books (Fiction or Non-Fiction) from the reading list. Write (type) a response to both books following the guidelines explained below. submission: the review to Mrs. Conrad (kconrad@wcastl.org) no later than Tuesday, July 31. After finishing both books, see the class website (listed above) for the specifics of the writing assignment. This summer s reading reflection is included in each student s first quarter English grade, so please follow the instructions on the website carefully and refer to rubric below as you complete the online review. Summer Reading Written Response RUBRIC Paragraph 1: identifies book titles and authors (4) provides brief summaries of each book (2) Paragraph 2: answers What do you think it means to be a person of good character? 2 SUMMER READING WRITTEN RESPONSE: Once you finish reading both books, you will need to type and submit (via ) a response to both books. You may use any Word Processor for this assignment (Microsoft Word, Apple's Pages). Details for the review are explained below, and the response is due Tuesday, July Format a document in MLA Format. If you're not sure what MLA format is, that's okay! Simply type your first and last name at the top. 2. Pa r ag r a p h 1: In this paragraph, write the book titles, authors, and a 1-2 sentence summary of each book. 3. Pa r ag r a p h 2: Answer the question, "What do you think it means to be a 'person of good character?'" Give an example or two of people who you know (personal friends or family, historical figures, celebrities, athletes, etc...) are examples of good character and what makes them examples of good character. 4. Pa r ag r a p h 3: Identify and explain who in your first book is the best example of "good character." Provide 2-3 specific examples of things the character does in the story that make them a good example of "good character." Explain how these examples prove that person is a person of good character. 5. Pa r ag r a p h 4: Identify and explain who in your first book is the best example of "good character." Provide 2-3 specific examples of things the character does in the story that make them a good example of "good character." Explain how these examples prove that person is a person of good character. *If you don't consider any of the characters in one or both of your books a "person of good character," you may explain why a character is not a person of good character, sharing examples and explaining how the examples prove they are not a person of good character. SUBMITTING YOUR BOOK RESPONSE Once you finish your book response, you will want to your paper to one of the eighth grade English teachers (Mrs. Conrad, kconrad@wcastl.org,) If you haven't submitted your book review by the due date (Tuesday, July 31), your parents will receive an reminding you to finish reading the books and write and submit the review. LATE PENALTY Remember, your written response must be received via by Tuesday, July 31, in order to avoid a late grade penalty. Students will receive a one-point grade reduction per day that the written assignment is late (up to a 50% total reduction). This will be reflected and noted in the first quarter grade.
