1 Kelly Knapp Annotated Bibliography 11/23/2015 K-3 Research Project on Thomas Edison. Exploring Thomas Edison
2 This Annotated Bibliography is a reference tool to assist both students and teachers. Its purpose is to provide a list and summary of non-print and print resources that could be used for lesson creation and research development. Exploring Thomas Edison Science Discoveries Thomas Edison and Electricity by Steve Parker Science Discoveries biographies take you on a journey through time on a fact filled adventure capturing Edison s life and time. (Parker, 1992) Review: This is more of a reference book. A student can use this book piece by piece instead of reading it as a whole. There are sections that are better then others, but the students can easy navigate through the book. DK Biogrpahy: ThomasEdison by Jan Adkins This biography tells the story of the famous inventor, from his childhood as an addled students, to his reign as the Wizard of Menlo Park, where he developed the electric light bulb, the phonograph, and many other inventions still used today. (Adkins, 2009) Review: Adkin s biography supports the common core standards. This excellent book provides a lot of informative material on Edison that was not previously known. This would be a great reference book for any school library. It paints the picture of a man who was certainly a real character and did not fit into any mold. (Murray, 1952) A Picture Book Of Thomas Alva Edison by David A. Adler Illustrated by John & Alexandra Wallner David Alder s biography is a K-4 book that simplifies and shortens an adult biography. Yet, it focuses on the highlights of the man s life and career achievements by depicting well-chosen occurrences. Review: This biography is a perfect short and sweet biography for younger students yet, is a wonderful introduction for k-3 readers who need information but cannot read lengthy chapter books. It is well researched and written in a student friendly language but also has great resources for teachers to keep on hand. Perfect for a Thomas Edison unit or child project. (Adler, 1996) Who Was Thomas Alva Edison? By Margret Frith Illustrated by John O Brien. This fun and exciting illustrated biography explains a curious child who fed worms to a friend to see if she would fly like a bird, a boy who left school at the age of 12 and was hard of hearing all his life, and the man who changed the world when he invented the light bulb. (Frith, 2005)
3 Review: All Who Was books are great for beginning readers. They give vivid pictures alongside challenging reading. This is a great book to spark an interest in history and geography for children. I recommended this because there is a few illustrations per chapter, which really help visualize represent the story. Timeline of Thomas Edison by The National Parks Service Thomas Edison was born, railroads were still new, most Americans lived on farms, and millions of people still lived as slaves in the southern United States. By the time he died the airplane and automobile had been invented, a Civil War and a World War had been fought, and most Americans lived in cities lit by Edison's electric lights. (Natioinal Histoircal Park) Review: Librarian s dream to take a vitural field trip (or real one) down to West Orange, NJ. The National Park Services created an environment that speaks to the researcher of Thomas Edison. Their website is loaded with important timelines, facts, and important information. Thomas Edison, Inventor Biopgraphy.com Biography.com is a reliable source on popular historic figures. They are a digital source for all compelling and fascinating topics. Reliable, is the main focus using this source. (Biography.com, n/a) Review: Bio gives not only a clear idea of who Thomas Edison was, but goes into great detail by providing an interactive video. While being easy to navigate, the site also is truthful in fact. Giving special quotes, important dates, and events are some interesting parts of this site. Thomas Edison by Barbara Kramer Learn all about Thomas Edison, one of the most important figures in American history, in this colorful, inviting, and entertaining biography. This carefully leveled reader is written in an easy-to-grasp style to encourage the inventors of tomorrow. (Amazon Summary) (Kramer, 2014) Review: This book is written for a beginning reading group. Gives all the amazing details of Thomas Edison for someone who is just beginning to read. National Geographic does a fantastic job publishing a easy reader for grade school children. Review: This book exceeded all of my expectations. The author presented Thomas Edison from child to adult in a straightforward, entertaining way, not shying away from the events in his life that might be considered controversial. You will learn a lot Thomas Edison's accomplishments, and why he was so successful throughout his life. Young Thomas Edison by Michael Dooling.
4 Dooling has brought Edisons boyhood into focus through careful attention to visual detail and a readable text. What emerges is a story of a determined, focused young man who, despite significant hearing loss and other setbacks, continued to experiment and create inventions that we still benefit from today. His questioning nature and creative genius were recognized and supported early on by his mother, who pulled him out of school to teach him at home when his teacher called him addled and sat him in a corner.(from School Library Journal) (Dooling, 2004) Review: This book exceeded all of my expectations. The author presented Thomas Edison from child to adult in a straightforward, entertaining way, not shying away from the events in his life that might be considered controversial. You will learn a lot Thomas Edison's accomplishments, and why he was so successful throughout his life. Edison: the father of invention Directed and written by Michelle Ferrari. This informative film, Edison, explores America s most famous inventor. Offering new perspectives on the man and his environment, and brightening not only the true nature of invention, but Edison s role in the turn-of-the-century America s rush into the future. Written and directed by Michelle Ferrari and produced by Ferrari. Michael Murphy narrates this documentary. (Ferrari, 2015) Review: A film helps a student paint a picture of a story they have read. I would recommend watching this film after reading the other books listed. Ferrari does not give us a sweet, loving in-depth explanation of Edison s achievements, but instead portrays a driven man whose workaholic nature fractured friendships and compromised his own relationship with his first wife.
