2 About this guide: In Slap Your Sides, a stunning new novel by Margaret A. Edwards Award winner M. E. Kerr, a Quaker boy s decision to be a conscientious objector rocks a small Pennsylvania town during World War II. Exploring a fresh, new subject for young adult fiction, M. E. Kerr brilliantly portrays a different side of WW II the homefront perspective and the unexpected, startling effects of war fever on a small town.the discussion topics and author biography in this reading group guide are intended to spark conversation about the issues raised in this compelling book. About the book: Everyone in Sweet Creek, Pennsylvania, knows about Jubal Shoemaker s brother Bud. Instead of going off to fight in Word War II, Bud abides by his family s Quaker beliefs and becomes a conscientious objector. Suddenly a lot of folks in town are treating the Shoemakers differently, including someone who writes hostile messages across their store window. Fourteenyear-old Jubal, who has always wanted to be like his older brother, wonders if he can be if he wants to be like him when Bud s decision is tearing his family apart. From Slap Your Sides: Friends, I have to speak up and oppose this praise for a conchie, even though he is my own nephew. I may love Bud Shoemaker, but I don t admire him any longer. How can I if he won t pull his weight in this war? How can you be pacifists with a madman like Hitler ready to rule the world? I want to say to you all, Wake up! ding Group uide Reading Grou up uide Reading Group Guid de Reading Group uide Readin

What is Jubal s reaction when he finds out she is the one defacing his father s store? How do you think Jubal s family situation affects his friendship with Daria? 2. What is Jubal s view of his older brother Bud? Does he agree with Bud s decision to be a conscientious objector? Does their relationship change throughout the novel? 3. What role does language and the power of words play throughout the novel? Discuss the different forms and usages such as the old-fashion plain language, the effects of the slanderous words on Mr. Shoemaker s store, communication through letter writing, and the songs played over the radio. 4. What role does religion play? What are the Quaker beliefs and how do they conflict with the rest of the town s views? Discuss each character s view of war and the reasons for it. Do you think Mrs. Shoemaker s religious beliefs contribute to the breakdown of communication between the father and the rest of the family? How do the people of Sweet Creek contribute to Mr. Shoemaker s change of character? 5. What role does Tommy play in Jubal s life? Does he act more like an older brother, a confidant, or a pal? Once Bud leaves home, how do the relationships between the three brothers change? Does Jubal ever feel threatened by Tommy and Bud s relationship?
4 Reading Group uide Readin g Group uide Reading Grou Guide Reading Group din 6. How does the Shoemaker family view Aunt Lizzie? Does she help or hurt the situation when she openly speaks her mind at the meetings and justifies the war? What is everyone s reaction? 7. How does Jubal view Natalia s sophisticated and knowledgeable ways? Is she a good influence on him? 8. How was the Hart s farm an escape for Jubal? What role did the horses play in his life? How were they substitutes for things that were missing in his life? 9. What is Jubal s reaction when he receives the apology letter from Daria? Does he ever express his love for her? 10. Discuss the role of Radio Dan, the homefront man. How do his radio broadcasts help the novel along? What is the significance of the song Slap Your Sides?
