1 Dear Educator or Leader, Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises, in partnership with curriculum specialists Young Minds Inspired (YMI), are pleased to present Aliens in the Attic, a FREE summer program that will bring alien-sized fun and imagination straight to your kids doorsteps. Based on the upcoming film, Aliens in the Attic, the guide features exciting and fun activities to incorporate into your regular summer program. The film releases in theaters nationwide on July 31st. You may want to contact your local theater to arrange a group trip to see this entertaining film as part of your summer program. However, kids may easily participate in the activities, whether or not they see the film. Included in this guide are reproducible activity masters, a colorful wall poster, and Family Connections. Although the materials are copyrighted, you may copy them for educational purposes and share them with other leaders/educators participating in your summer program. Now launch your kids into some out of this world action as they experience a summer like no other when the Aliens in the Attic invade! Sincerely, Dr. Dominic Kinsley, Editor in Chief How to Use This Program Display the wall poster in a prominent location to generate kids interest. Review, photocopy, and distribute the reproducible masters at the beginning of each activity. Aliens in the Attic Film Synopsis On what should have been a boring summer family vacation, fifteen-year-old Tom Pearson, his siblings, and cousins are suddenly drawn into the middle of an alien invasion. Tazer, Skip, Razor, and Sparks have been sent from the Planet Zirkonia to fulfill a mission begun light years ago to take over the Earth. These aliens land in the attic of the vacation home that Tom s family has rented for the summer, seeking a special device that is buried under the house. Their mission is to find and activate this device that will immediately launch an army of Zirkonians to attack Earth. Armed with gadgets, special appendages and other intergalactic tricks, these aliens are serious. As the story unfolds, Tom and the others discover they have to save the world. The kids learn that their smarts, talent, and teamwork make them a true force to reckon with and that by believing in themselves they make the ultimate difference. Activity 1: Alien Scavenger Hunt Additional Materials: Paper bag for each kid, assorted scavenger hunt items, and materials for assembling their alien figure Kids may complete the scavenger hunt indoors, outdoors, or a combination of both. Remind kids that all items found must fit inside their paper bag. Once the items are collected, kids will use the glue, tape, string, etc., to construct their alien. Completed alien creations can be featured in a special display area. Activity 2: Gadget Central Explain that in Aliens in the Attic, the aliens, along with Tom and the other kids, use their own variety of gadgets to try to outsmart one another. Instruct kids to think of a gadget they might invent out of everyday items (basketball, pencil sharpener, paintbrush, etc.). Have kids sketch their gadget on the activity master, and then tell how it works: What activates the gadget? How does it work? What does the gadget do? Is there a secret hidden function on the gadget? Kids can use clay to build their gadgets and display them by their sketches in a Gallery of Gadgets. Activity 3: Upstairs and Downstairs Have kids complete the maze as it leads them throughout the house on the trail of the aliens. Then, have groups determine a location where the device might be hidden. On a separate piece of paper, have the groups create their own maze that leads them from their location to the hidden device. Have groups bury their gadget from Activity Two in the designated location and exchange mazes to see who can locate the hidden devices. Extension Activities: Outer Space Olympics. Give summer outdoor activities an alien twist. For example, Meteor Dodge Ball, Hoola Hoop Orbits, and Gravity Busters Jump Rope. Space Food. Work together to create a cookbook featuring wacky and weird alien dishes or design a restaurant menu for Zirkonians. My Interplanetary Summer Vacation. Have kids pretend their summer vacation takes them to an imaginary planet. What would their mission be? How would they travel there? Would there be life on this planet? Kids can create the spacecraft used to get to their planet, make a scrapbook featuring pictures of themselves touring this planet, or send postcards back to their friends from the planet. is the only company developing free, innovative classroom materials that is owned and directed by award-winning former teachers. 2 1 Activity ALIEN Scavenger Hunt In the film, Aliens in the Attic, aliens Razor, Tazer, Skip, and Sparks arrive from the Planet Zirkonia to take over the world. Soon Tom realizes it s up to him and his siblings and cousins to use their smarts, talent, and teamwork to save the world! Help Tom and his team defend themselves from the alien invasion by making an alien with items you find on the scavenger hunt below. Each item must match the type of material listed for each body part. To remember what item you are using for each body part, draw a sketch of that item inside the WHAT I M USING section of your paper. Then, create your alien by putting your items together. Alien Scavenger Hunt Checklist ALIEN BODY PART TYPE OF MATERIAL HEAD... Hard WHAT I M USING FACIAL FEATURES Eyes... Flat Ears... Shade of Yellow Nose... Rough BODY Neck... Soft Chest... Shiny Arms... Shade of Brown Legs... Smooth Feet... From Nature Your child is participating in a special summer program based on the exciting new film from Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises entitled, Aliens in the Attic, due in theaters July 31st. Today s activity featured a scavenger hunt in which children collected materials to create an alien of their own. At home, take a picture of your child and his or her alien and post it on the refrigerator. Encourage your child to bring his alien along when viewing the film.
3 Activity 2 Gadget Central The aliens in Aliens in the Attic use many space gadgets to help them control humans. But they don t expect the kids in the film to use toys and other household items to invent their own gadgets to outsmart them! If you were a kid in the film, what gadget would you create to get the better of the aliens? Use the Gadget Profile space below to sketch and name your gadget. Gadget Profile Gadget Name: Gadget Creator: (your name) What household materials would you use to create your gadget? Your child is participating in a special summer program based on the exciting new film from Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises entitled, Aliens in the Attic, due in theaters July 31st. Your child completed this imaginative activity of designing a gadget he or she might use to outsmart aliens. Have your child tell you how his or her gadget works!
4 Activity 3 Upstairs and Downstairs Part A. In Aliens in the Attic the kids learn that the character named Sparks is really a good alien. Sparks then joins forces with the kids in an effort to stop the alien invasion. Complete the maze below to help Sparks and the kids stop the Zirkonians and send them back to their planet. Circle the gadgets you find along the way. Start Finish Part B. Pretend that the Zirkonians land outside your building in search of their secret hidden device. Now it s your turn to work with Sparks to save the Earth! As a group, decide where the hidden device might be located. Then, draw a maze detailing how you would get from your location to the hidden device. Your child is participating in a special summer program based on the exciting new film from Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises entitled, Aliens in the Attic, due in theaters July 31st, about a family summer vacation interrupted by an alien invasion. To continue the fun at home, look at photos from some of your family s past summer vacations and share your memories of them together with your child. Did anything unexpected occur? Perhaps it wasn t on the scale of an alien invasion, but maybe your experiences were funny, strange, or unique in other ways!
