1 Serving the Community since 1985 In Gear R O T A R Y C L U B O F B E A U M A R I S W E E K L Y B U L L E T I N Number 32, 22 February 2016 Presidents Report Thought provoking and gripping, our Fellowship night to view Spotlight wasn t our usual outing for fellowship, but sometimes we need to look at the uncomfortable truths. I had found it difficult to imagine how the storyline could be made into an absorbing film; but the actors, writers, directors and producers managed this. Thanks to Richard for his always superb organization and care. I believe Richard, aided by Rewa, has other surprises in store for us as part of our Fellowship activities I look forward to them. Last week I wrote about the wonderful turnout of members for both the Farmers Market and the Day on Oak Street; later on this week, as I did more Rotary business at night, I was thinking about the contribution volunteers make to society. For the Day on Oak Street alone, at a minimum, if we count up the volunteers (7 people in hours per shift) this event alone contributed 63 volunteer hours to the community. If we cost it out at a skilled penalty rate of say $40 per hour, club members gave $2,520 of labour on Sunday. We give time and we give money; both equally valuable. We received an of thanks from Bryce Gardiner the head of the organising committee for the Day on Oak Street so our contribution is appreciated. Bayside Council is holding Community Consultations about Beaumaris Concourse (24/2, 25/2, and 27/2) and the Draft plan for Sandringham Village. We have been particularly asked to the Beaumaris Consultation so members including Peter Flude and Malcolm Sawle will be going along to these consultations. See details on Pages 2 and 3. I went to the President s Meeting for District on Friday night, some of the interesting information from that is: Our own Tony McKenna spoke about RYLA and represented both RYLA and us very well. 2 Tony is planning for the next RYLA from Monday 4/7/16 to Saturday 9/7/16 Colin Norton is now President of Sandringham Rotary for the remainder of this year and the next. I invited Colin to attend a meeting at VGC and he seemed keen to do so Publicity pull up banners are available from David Tolstrup for events The District Insurance officer is keen that we have an attendance list and sign in at all events we participate in, and that if there are any incidents that we report them as soon as possible. He said that the Rotary Insurance cover for when we are at events, or travelling to events, provides exceptional cover The qualification seminar for Global Foundation grants for the next financial year is to be held on Friday 13 th May 2016 There were several volunteering opportunities overseas which David Alexander spoke about, he can be contacted about these In the coming week I am looking forward to inducting Margaret Cunnington as our newest member next Thursday, as well as hearing our speaker David Goldstone on a new approach to Rotary; as Malcolm wrote anyone with an interest in the future of Rotary should come along and hear from David how they created a new approach to Rotary at the Rotary Club of Crawley (ROC) in WA. Yours in Rotary Trish Note; As part of our arrangement with Hocking Stuart discounts on agents fees are available to RCOB members. Hocking Stuart Sandringham Station Street Telephone: Page 2
