Dada Art What s the point of life? Who cares? What s the point of art? Who cares?
What is Dada? Ar7s7c and literary movement starts in Germany, spreads interna7onally It arose as a reac7on to WWI and the na7onalism/ra7onalism, which many people thought had brought the war about Rejected conven7ons in art and thought Basic idea is that life doesn t make any sense, so art shouldn t make any sense either Wanted to shock society into self- awareness
World War I Influence World War I unleashed slaughter and devasta7on on a scale unprecedented in history More than 9 million soldiers died in four years The Dadaists believed reason and logic had been responsible for the insane spectacle of collec7ve homicide that was World War I They concluded the only route to salva7on was through the irra7onal and intui7ve
Collage Pioneered a varia7on of the techinque called collage created ar7s7c composi7ons from cut pieces of paper They called it photomontage because their collages consisted of pieces of magazine photographs Collage lent itself well to the Dada desire to exploit chance in the crea7on of art and an7- art.

THE BAUHAUS Art into Industry
THE BAUHAUS Founded in 1919 in Germany Bauhaus sought to use industry not in a destruc7ve way but as a posi7ve force to democra7ze (DEFINE) a standard of living. Industrial materials and process, ra7onalized and simplified by an ar7s7c designer, could build a beker society. Each workshop has a "formmeister" and a cra]sman, with the ideal to blend the two skills in one, as a universal designer.
