Three Minute Report Now that you have heard about surrealism from a professor at Dartmouth, write what you now know about surrealism. Tell me what you think it means. How you might describe the artwork to others.
Thinking about it Think about the lucid dream activity we did in class yesterday. How is the lucid dream activity a little like Automatism?
Think some more Automatism might produce what kind of poems, stories or novels?
Cultural movement Artistic style that was founded in 1924 by André Breton
Surrealism style uses visual imagery from the subconscious mind to create art without the intention of logical comprehensibility Did any of your lucid dreams created some illogical imagery.
The movement began primarily in Europe, centered in Paris, and attracted many of the members of the Dada community. Influenced by the psychoanalytical work of Freud and Jung, there are similarities between the Surrealist movement and the Symbolist movement of the late 19th century.
Some of the greatest artists of the 20th century became involved in the Surrealist movement
The Surrealist movement eventually spread across the globe Influenced artistic endeavors from painting and sculpture to pop music and film directing
The greatest known Surrealist artist is the world famous Salvador Dali.
Write your thoughts Based on what you have learned, what type of writing or music would you expect from an author who considers him or herself a surrealist? You will be reading several poems by surrealist writers today.
Activity Today you will be assigned groups Each group will received a poem, instructions sheet, and worksheet. Your task is to read the poem as directed, complete the worksheet and be prepared to report on your poem. You will have about 15 minutes to complete the task.
