1 POLS Sec. 01 International Security Syllabus Prof. Dan Lindley Spring Semester 2015 DeBartolo 347, Tuesday 3:30p-6:15p ; Office Hours Tues 11:00-12:30; Weds 09:30-11:00; website: This course surveys some of the major debates and issue areas in international security. These range from the formation of strategy and insurgency to conventional force analysis, organizational politics, and surprise attacks. All the readings for each class are to be read for each class. We will run the classes like conferences. Starting with the second class, we will select readings for students to present for the next class. A student will present a paper for 10 mins, another student will discuss/critique the paper for 10 mins. Then we will open up discussion of that article. In their presentations and critiques, students can incorporate other readings. Then after mins or so, we will move onto presentation of the next selected reading. Presenters and discussants are encouraged to prepare 1-2 page write ups of their arguments/points for distribution to the class. These are ungraded, but hopefully these write ups will accumulate to a decent stack over the semester and should help students prepare for comps. Grades will be based on participation and on a 25 page paper due on the last day of class. All papers must be focused on a security studies topic: strategies, doctrines, and forces for, or causes of organized mass violence. You can write two types of paper, and these types may be combined. First, you can enter into a theoretical debate. Using logic, deduction, sensitivity to counterargument and some marshaling of evidence to make a theoretical argument and/or try to take down a theoretical pillar. Second, you can propose and test a theory using more in depth historical evidence. The readings will almost always be on Ereserves, available via the Hesburgh Library main page ( ), under Library Reserves. You can also use the permalinks provided for many of the readings, especially if they are available under JSTOR. Most journals can be accessed via this: Security Studies Note on Sec Studs from the library: "We only have access to the online version back to 1997, so that's why you aren't able to download the pdf. Your article was published in We 1
