S. course student, School of Electrical Engineering, Pusan National University RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Ongoing Research Support Virtual Reality Training System for Visual Prosthesis Jan Dec Principle Investigator (PI), US Department of Defense (Pending) This project is to develop and test the feasibility of a VR training system for cortical visual prostheses that also can be used for retinal implant and other sensory substitution devices (SSDs). Although various visual prostheses have been developed, there are no general training paradigms to improve visual performance with them. We aim to train users to achieve general recognition of visual features and eventually untrained (new) objects through a novel training paradigm implemented in a 3D VR environment. 4 / 13

5 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (continued) Active confocal imaging for visual prostheses Jan Dec Co-Investigator (PI: Eli Peli), US Department of Defense, MR We will develop and evaluate a novel front-end optical and video processing system to be used with any visual prosthesis that will remove background clutter and therefore improve object detection and recognition despite the prostheses limitations. Measuring the visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) reduction methods for passive and interactive stereo 3D (S3D) viewing with head mounted display (HMD) Sep Aug Co-Investigator (PI: Eli Peli), Google Faculty Research Award We propose possible causes of VIMS and testing of the corresponding solutions for two major use cases of the S3D HMDs: passive viewing, where the user of the S3D HMD watches pre-made S3D contents, and interactive viewing, where the user of the S3D HMD interacts with the virtual environment. The results of the proposed studies will guide further improvement of the design and rendering technique for S3D HMD. Active confocal imaging for visual prostheses Feb Feb Principle Investigator, Grant from the Promobilia Foundation, Sweden, #14222 This project is to develop novel imaging system to focus on only one depth plane of object of interest with removal of background for visual prostheses. Visual Field Expansion through Innovative Multiplexing Prism Design Sep Aug.2018 Postdoctoral Fellow (PI: Eli Peli), NIH/NEI R01 EY This project is to develop an innovative multiplexing prism lens (the Quadrafield lens) for patients with concentric peripheral field loss (tunnel vision), to conduct laboratory-based tests to determine the parameters for the prisms and prism placements within the lens, and then conduct a multicenter randomized controlled trial to evaluate device efficacy. Completed Research Support Model Based Image Enhancement for the Visually Impaired Dec Dec Postdoctoral Fellow (PI: Eli Peli), NIH/NEI R01 EY05957 The long-term goal of this project is to design and evaluate practical image enhancement methods that would enable people with impaired vision, particularly those with central field loss due to agerelated macular disease, to enjoy and benefit from the spread of video technology. Study on effect of super multi-view condition in three-dimensional display to accommodation response and improvement of optical vision rehabilitation device Dec Nov Principle Investigator, National Research Foundation of Korea, 2012R1A6A3A The goal of this project is characterize human factors of super multi-view display and develop the vision rehabilitation device for visually impaired person using optical engineering. Coded Aperture Design for Depth Extraction Apr Nov Postdoctoral Fellow (PI: Byoungho Lee), Samsung Electronics Co., Korea The goal of this project is to develop an image processing algorithm for 3D depth extraction from coded aperture using light-field technology. Based on the depth extraction algorithm using coded aperture, 3D sensor application could be developed for TV and mobile phone. Feasibility investigation of the high density ray field display for real 3D May Jun Graduate Research Assistant (PI: Byoungho Lee), Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Korea This project is to investigate the impact of high density ray field 3D display to accommodationconvergence conflict.
