7 What Is It? The Annual CanSat Competition is competition hosted by the American Astronautical Society (AAS) and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in Burkett, Texas. Each year, teams from around the world compete in designing, building, and launching a sensor payload that travels through a planetary atmosphere collecting an array of data through out different phases of the flight. Credit: Lauren Olsen What do we do? Each of the 3 teams that the AIAA student chapter sends to participate in the competition are involved in the engineering life cycle of a complex project. This includes the engineering designs, design review presentations, prototyping, testing, and launch operations. 8 AIAA Design, Build, Fly Goal: Design, fabricate and demonstrate the flight capabilities of a UAS. Fly-off will be held in Wichita, KS. This year- two planes: Heavy lift Manufacturing Support Aircraft. Modular Production Aircraft. Will need to combine an efficient, high performance system with practical and affordable manufacturing requirements. Design process will combine detailed Aerodynamic (CFD, Wind Tunnel tests) & Structural Analysis (FEM, etc.) and Avionics integration. Project will be handled like a real world engineering problem.

9 Graduate Team Aircraft Design Large Air Tanker for Wildfire Attack Required to design a replacement for a wildfire air tanker. NASA has predicted a lot more fires therefore there s a need for a purpose aircraft built specifically for fighting wildfires. Groups of 4 are required One team is already available, looking to recruit more grad students for additional teams Multi disciplinary project: Aerodynamics, Structures, Controls and leadership role.
