1 Wednesday, 24 October 2007 Boeing B100 Auditorium & Prologue Room First Flights: X-36 and X-45A A UAV Perspective Mr. Terry Weber Boeing Test & Evaluation Engineer This presentation, originally given at the 2003 SFTE/AIAA/SETP Flight Test Safety Workshop, looks at the first flights of two very different unmanned systems; the X- 36 Tailless Fighter Agility Research Aircraft and the X-45A Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle Demonstrator. The talk will cover general lessons to be drawn for the flight test of new aircraft, and specific considerations for remotely operated aircraft. Finally, the entire X-36 and X-45A flight test programs will be reviewed. In addition, Mr. Weber has served on non-advocate and flight readiness review boards for the X-37 and X-48B experimental aircraft. Mr. Weber has a B. Sc. in Aerospace and Engineering Mechanics and a M. Sc. in Engineering Mechanics. He is a senior member of the Society of Flight Test Engineers and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. 2 Thursday, 29 November 2007 Boeing B100 Café Escape Systems: The Evolution of Ejection Seats Mr. Kurt Ricketts This presentation is an informal discussion regarding the evolution of escape systems in cold war era combat aircraft with physical exhibits. The presentation will be divided into four related escape system components: parachutes, canopy/escape hatches, survival equipment and ejection seats with the latter segment further divided into a discussion of the unique features of each seat and the aircraft they came from. The aircraft represented are the F-86, F-102, F-104, B-52D, B-52E, A-7, F-4 and F-106. About the Speaker: After earning a BS at Lindenwood College, Kurt began work at McDonnell Douglas in 1978 as a Technical Illustrator for Product Support. In 1980, Kurt moved to Tool Engineering supporting such programs as F-4, F-15, AV-8B, F/A18A-D, NASP, ATF, A-12 and F/A/18E/F. In 1981, he began collecting and restoring ejection seats. 3 Wednesday, 12 December 2007 Boeing B100 Café Flight Testing: The F-15 STOL/Maneuvering Demonstrator Presented by Mr. Larry Walker Project Pilot on the F-15 S/MTD The presenter and primary test pilot for this fascinating program is Larry Walker. Larry was a test pilot with McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in St Louis for 25 years and tested many aircraft ranging from the slatted F-4, F-18 full scale development, AV-8B full scale development, Pegasus engine digital engine control development, the F-15 S/MTD and ACTIVE programs, F-15E high angle of attack and spin tests, and the X-36, the remotely piloted, tailless, high angle of attack research aircraft. Larry is a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots; he was formerly a Marine pilot and military test pilot. His decorations include two awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross and 13 Strike/Flight Air Medals for combat action in the Vietnam War. He has given 10 presentations to the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, and authored 12 articles for the McDonnell-Douglas Product Support Digest. Most recently, he was the Lead Author and Editor of the V/STOL Chapter in the SETP Guide to Critical and Exploratory Flight Testing. Dr. Voss will describe the mission, including a 15 minute video about the flight, and other aspects of life as an astronaut. St. Louis University St. Louis Room, Room 300, Busch Student Center 20 N. Grand Dr. Voss received a BS degree in engineering science from Purdue University, a MS degree in electrical engineering and a PhD in aeronautics/astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She became an astronaut in July A veteran of five space flights, Dr. Voss has logged over 49 days in space, traveling 18.8 million miles in 779 Earth orbits. In February 2000, during Voss' last mission, she and five other astronauts aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour, mapped with radar more than 47 million miles of our planet's land surface. For the last several years (October 2004 to November 2007), Dr. Voss worked at NASA Ames Research Center, where she was the Science Director of NASA's Kepler Spacecraft Research Center, looking for Earth-size planets in other solar systems. Hallion Historically, frustrated attempts to generate manned hypersonic systems have generally obscured an important story: the steady expansion of hypersonic capabilities from the first interest in hypersonic flight through the era of the Space Shuttle and on to programs such as the X-51 of today. Dr. Hallion is the Alfred Verville Fellow at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, having retired in 2006 as a Senior Advisor on the Secretary of the Air Force staff.
