Ballarat Law Courts Excursion The Year 10 Law class visited the Ballarat Law Courts on Thursday April 23. The class was split in two and the groups took turns to attend Court 1 and Court 3 - which both functioned as the Magistrates Court. We didn t always understand what was happening because the cases sometimes move very quickly, however, we did have the opportunity to hear some cases which appeared in to the Courier the next day. 1

2 Year 8 - German Was machst du in deiner Freizeit? - What do you do in your free time? Year 8 students were creating a piece of writing using their ipads. The topic was free time and this is a sample cartoon from two Year 8 girls talking about their free time. NEWSPAPER ARTICLES FROM THE PAST We have included in this newsletter a number of articles from local papers during which were provided by Dr Dianne Smith. The articles are a very interesting read and provide an insight in to the cultural beliefs of the community at the time. Please take the time to read some of the news from and absorb the impact of The Great War. 2

5 Gone But Not Forgotten He sat up on his old wheelchair and I sat upon his knee, What happened to your leg Grandpa? and this is what he said to me: It was long ago my boy, back in year 1915, I lost it not to illness sonny, but in war at Gallipoli. In Paddington we stood there, full of longing, hope and fear, They said it would be over by Christmas or New Year, Dead scared we wouldn t make it, wouldn t quite come up to par, Dead scared they wouldn t take us, though we d come so very far. With brother, cousin, dad and mate, off to war we head, They did not join me on my return, for they were all now dead. Son, it is not my missing leg over which I still cry, But for my fallen brothers; at Gallipoli they still lie. As Grandpa spoke to me a tear ran down his face, At this I took his hand and held him in an embrace, You re my hero Grandpa and they were such brave men, I held his old face in my hands, we will remember them. Hannah Cameron Year We thought about our mothers, oh so proud of what we d done, We thought about our sweethearts, how they d miss us when we d gone, The envy of our mates as we marched off, heads held high, The glory of our nation as we marched away to die. But no man can be manly when he s bleeding in the sand, And no man can be manly when no longer can he stand, All around me shots were fired, my fighting comrades fell, The sand littered with bodies and with empty bullet shells, ANZAC ASSEMBLY This year we commemorated the centenary of the landing in Gallipoli and reflected on the efforts of those men and women who have fought and in some cases died for our country. We remembered the sacrifice of all the soldiers who have fought to protect Australia and its allies. From Ballarat High School, 1022 students fought in the wars involving Australia. This year for Anzac Day, we had 1022 ceramic poppies to represent ex students from Ballarat High School, who have served in times of war and the sacrifices they have made. Both students and teachers have contributed to this amazing cause helping to mould, glaze and paint these stunning poppies. 100 of these poppies will be on display in Peacock Hall permanently, to be a memorial of the 100th year of the Gallipoli landing. The remaining 922 poppies will be on sale in the hope to raise money for Ballarat Legacy Group. Legacy is dedicated to caring for families affected by any form of military conflict and our goal is to raise as much money as possible for veterans and their families. If you are interested in purchasing these poppies they are $10 each and can be purchased from the General Office and picked up on May the 18 th between 1 & 4pm from Peacock Hall. 5

6 AIME AIME provides a dynamic educational program that gives Indigenous high school students the skills, opportunities, belief and confidence to finish school at the same rate as their peers. AIME has proven to dramatically improve the chances of Indigenous student s finishing school. AIME also connects students with post Year 12 opportunities, including further education and employment. For the past 2 years, Ballarat High School Year 9 to 12 students have participated in the AIME program and have supported past and current Indigenous students. To show their support, AIME program mentors Sissy Austin and Josh Muir, along with Year 9 student Jasmine McCaw presented Ballarat High School Principal, Gary Palmer with a framed AIME Hoody to display at the school. 7 USA SPACE CAMP & EDUCATIONAL TOUR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR SEPTEMBER 2017 Washington D.C.: The group will spend 3 days in Washington visiting the famous Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum, which maintains the largest collection of historic air and spacecraft in the world. It is also a vital centre for research into the history, science, and technology of aviation and space flight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. See our national monuments and federal buildings flooded in lights during our 3 hour guided tour of the city after dark, from the illuminated dome of the US Capitol to the The Kennedy Centre, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, House and Senate Office Buildings, Federal Triangle, Pennsylvania Avenue, The White House, Capitol Reflecting Pool, Georgetown, Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial, and the World War II Memorial. Kennedy Space Centre: Cape Canaveral, Florida. The group will also travel to Orlando to visit the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral, and see the history of US space travel. They will experience a very realistic simulated shuttle launch and walk through a full-scale space shuttle, then be amazed by the Apollo Saturn V moon rocket. Students will meet and have lunch with a NASA astronaut and view an IMAX movie afterwards. The group will have the opportunity to join a site tour, take part in a Shuttle Launch Experience, Astronaut Encounter and may participate in numerous hands-on activities at the Visitors Centre. EPCOT: Disney World, Orlando, Florida. The group will spend a full day at the EPCOT Centre to see Future World including the Innovations Pavilion, Test Track, Spaceship Earth, the Universe of Energy, Mission Space, Living Land and Seas displays that are out of this world. They will also attend a behind the scenes look at how Dolphins are trained and meet the trainers and vets at the Living Seas pavilion provided by the Disney Youth Education Services program. EPCOT also contains World Showcase, a Disney expo type presentation of the character and features of 11 nations of the world. Then the unbelievable evening fireworks display Illuminations. Advanced Space Academy: Huntsville, Alabama. The Advanced Space Academy is fully endorsed by NASA and offers hands-on training aimed at students between 15 and 18. The students will participate in a rigorous program that teaches them about the mental, emotional and physical demands astronauts face and provides leadership training as well as learning the importance of teamwork. They will be able to focus on their own field of interest: Pilot, Mission Specialist and rotate roles in the Orbiter, Space Station and Mission Control. Computer and engineering skills are put to the test as the students design and test a virtual reality Mars rover as well as 1/6 gravity simulations, a Multi-Axis Trainer and a Neutral Buoyancy Trainer.
