1 WASHINGTON, D.C. ACTIVITY PACKET Enclosed in these pages are the activities you are required to complete on our trip to Gettysburg, Washington, D.C., and Arlington National Cemetery. These activities have been designed to help you get the most out of your trip. It is important that you have fun and equally important that you learn about the places we will visit on our trip. The following pages explain the activities you will complete before we leave, while there, and after we return. It is extremely important that you put forth your best efforts when working on these activities. Please keep this packet with you at all times on the trip, as you will need to refer to these pages while you are visiting the sites. Chaperones will not have extra copies. It will be difficult to know what you are seeking if you do not have your booklet. Although these activities will require you to work hard, you will have fun completing them. We hope that this trip and these activities will give you many special experiences that you will remember for the rest of your lives. Have fun! 2 Daily Checklist Use the following checklist to help you organize your days. You need to collect certain items for your scrapbook, so check this list to make sure you don t forget anything. Day 1: Gettysburg 1. Pictures from the Gettysburg Museum that show CAUSES of the Civil War 2. Pictures from the Gettysburg Museum that show EFFECTS of the Civil War 3. Picture of (or from) Little Round Top 4. Picture of Pickett s Charge 5. Journal Entry A: Chaperone s initials on journal (See page 16 for directions) Days 2-4: Washington, D.C. and Arlington, VA 1. Picture of any scene at Arlington National Cemetery 2. Picture of John F. Kennedy s Eternal Flame 3. Picture of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 4. Picture of the Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial 5. Picture of Robert E. Lee s Mansion 6. Picture of Iwo Jima Memorial 7. Picture of the World War II Memorial 8. Picture of the Korean War Memorial 9. Picture of the Vietnam War Women s Memorial 10. Picture of the Vietnam War Memorial ( The Wall ) 11. Picture of Name (from Virtual Wall Rubbing) at the Vietnam War Memorial 12. Picture of the Lincoln Memorial 13. Picture of the Franklin D. Journal Entry D: Chaperone s initials on journal (See page 16 for directions) Other Miscellaneous Items Pictures 1, 2, and 3 all must be at a historically significant place and collected sometime during the trip. 1. Picture of you, alone, at your favorite spot 2. Picture of you and your partner alone at a historically significant location 3. Picture of your group and chaperone alone at a historically significant location 4. Picture of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial along with one of his inspirational quotes found at the memorial 5. You are required to place your two page Three Branches of Government layout in your scrapbook. You should have already completed all of the caption work for this project before the trip. 10
3 Vietnam War Memorial Paragraph You are to find the name of the person you chose prior to the trip and take a picture of that person s name on the Vietnam War Memorial Wall. If the location of your person s name is too high for a picture, you MUST at least take a picture of the panel number to receive credit. You are also to include the virtual wall rubbing of your individual in your scrapbook. Both of these items will be put into your scrapbook on the same page as your Vietnam Memorial paragraph from earlier this year. **Soldier s Name: **Soldier s Location on the Wall: Museum Research Items As your group visits the National Museum of American History and the National Air and Space Museum, you are required to choose one project from each group and include it in your scrapbook. The directions and the requirements for these projects are on the next page. National Museum of American History Exhibitions A. American Presidency B. Within These Walls C. 4 Museum Research Items One project from each museum 1. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY ( Choose any exhibition from the list on page 13 and explore your interests. You are to devote a minimum of two pages of your scrapbook to what you learn in this exhibition. Be sure to include: Name of the exhibition/room in the form of a typed title Four pictures from the exhibition (Pictures of signs/plaques do not count) Description for each picture that describes the different artifacts found in the room, as well as any other interesting items that you found. This should be a minimum of two quality sentences. You must complete a facts page of at least 10 facts while you are in the museum. This must be signed by your chaperone. 2. NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM (CHOOSE ONE) A) HISTORY OF FLIGHT LAYOUT (AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM) Take pictures and notes about any three of the historical aircraft in this museum. The Spirit of St. Louis, the Wright Brothers plane, (to be found on the first floor suspended from the ceiling of the Milestones of Flight), the V - 1 Rocket and the Tomahawk Missile (to be found suspended from the ceiling on the second floor opposite the Apollo to the Moon exhibit), the Space Shuttle (found on the first floor in the exhibit Rocketry and Space Flight ), etc. Create a two-page layout in your scrapbook, which includes: Three pictures from the exhibition (Pictures of signs/plaques don t count) Two sentence detailed description for each aircraft You must complete a facts page of at least 10 facts while you are in the museum. This must be signed by your chaperone. OR B) SPACE CAPSULES LAYOUT (AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM) Observe the space capsules found in the museum and creating a project that represents the importance of the space program. Be sure to include: Picture of at least three of the capsules with appropriate titles Two-sentence description for each space capsule You must complete a facts page of at least 10 facts while you are in the museum. This must be signed by your chaperone. 12
5 Daily Journals You are required to keep a daily journal that is a mix of fact and opinion. 1. You are expected to meet the same standard-based requirements from your Language Arts class. Daily entries are to be 3 paragraphs, with each one containing quality sentences. To receive all the possible points, please stay away from starting any sentences with, Today we went to. 2. FINAL DRAFT requirements are connected to the following Language Arts objectives: CCSS.ELA-Literacy 8.1 and 8.2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English: 1) grammar & usage AND 2) capitalization, punctuation, & spelling 3. Your journal entries should include a positive summary of your day and your reaction to what you experienced. DO NOT WRITE ABOUT INSIGNIFICANT FACTS! 4. The first two paragraphs for Journal A should already be done. Paragraph #3 should be a reflection of what you saw during the museum tour, movie, or the guided bus tour. 5. There should be one topic per paragraph for the remaining journals. The required topics for Journals B & C cover several items we have specifically studied in History class this year. Please know you will need to match your paragraphs to the topics of Journals B & C even if you are unable to visit a place due to time restrictions. You have more options for Journal D's topics as they are places you will be visiting throughout the trip. TOPICS JOURNAL B AND JOURNAL C Washington & Monument Jefferson & Memorial Lincoln & Memorial National Archives (Declaration of Independence) National Archives (Constitution) National Archives (Bill of Rights) TOPICS JOURNAL D Arlington National Cemetery World War II Memorial Vietnam War Memorial Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Korean War Memorial Pentagon Memorial 6. Each chaperone will initial your journal entry to make sure that they are complete. Please know that a chaperone s initials do not represent full credit for the final draft, just credit for doing the original on the trip.
