Chapter 1 : The Emerald Wand of Oz by Sherwood Smith The Emerald Wand of Oz is an Oz story in the classic form created by L. Frank Baum over years ago. Yet it has a modern flavor that may make it acceptable to a young audience. Wed, 16 Nov That sounds as if it might be the nearest large city, where she might have stayed overnight for special excursions selling some of their produce and buying supplies, with a hotel stay for a special treat, maybe? Thu, 17 Nov I thoroughly dislike the typeface chosen for the numbers themselves. Looking back at old Digests, it looks like John N. White proposed the idea in February, and a number of people signed onto it in the following months. We know Sherwood Smith had an advisor who was involved in those discussions, so perhaps she got the idea or assurance that it was plausible to some Oz fans by that route. Bell JnoLBell at earthlink. Fri, 18 Nov Sun, 20 Nov First of all, think Smith made an astute observation about the therapeutic effect Oz has on its child visitors; their adventures nurture their positive qualities, while the villains often exhibit the less desirable qualities of the protagonists, although often in a highly exaggerated form. For example, Dorothy can be single minded and stubborn, prone to conquering, traits carried out to much fuller extent by the Wicked Witch of the West and the Nome King. Dori and Em both learn to be better versions of themselves. Dori becomes less dreamily selfish while Em learns to accept the wonder and disorder in life. Bastinda models their worst behavior: Dorothy was an orphan which seems to me the quintessential dilemma for a child protagonist of the tale 19th century, following in the tradition of Dickens or Twain. It left the child unmoored, shuttled into orphanages or into care of relatives. And Dorothy is not the only child protagonist from this era who, though her cheer and determination, transforms the dour situation around her Heidi, Pollyanna, Anne of Green Gables. Today becoming an orphan seems much less possible; additionally, the cultural weight of being one has pretty much disappeared. Smith, I think, has simply, yet wisely, substituted one convention for another. Where she is less successful is when her characters come to Oz. The landscape is not particularly magical; in fact, after describing the flowers that surround them -- "Crimson, pink, pale mauve, deep red that was almost purple" -- Smith seems to define the Ozian landscape by what it is not: There was no sign of any of the other houses on their street, either whole or wrecked. No cars in driveways -- no driveways. No sidewalk, no streetlamps or street signs. Their block was gone; the next block was gone. Everywhere she turns she sees evidence that the drabness of Kansas has been left behind and replaced by the magic of Oz. The difference is that Baum negates Kansas while Smith negates Oz. Once arrived in Oz, most child protagonists almost immediately join forces with a magical companion. As it stands, Dori and Em think rather too much about their situation as home, a habit that drags down the narrative. Aside from a shrug of her shoulders at the beginning of her adventures, Dorothy never seems to think much about home. Because Dorothy finds a lunch pail tree early on, the seeds of magic have been planted, and the reader is more inclined to believe that a girl who has found a magical lunch can operate a magical belt. That said, there seems to be a lot of magic in this book - the magic food the children eat, the picture frame washing machines, the flying carpet, even the water wands - although none of it seems particularly magical. For all the trees with surprising fruit that Baum planted and all the Soup Seas and marshmallow giants of Thompson, I think both of them would have agreed that the inhabitants of Oz probably did their own laundry. This forced inaction slows down the emotional growth necessary to overcoming obstacles during future adventures. Dori and Em end up being unkind to the unicorns while life among the fox hunters allow Robin and Merry to develop the skills necessary to escape. Regalia Digest, Vol 16, Issue 16 From: Mon, 21 Nov There were lovely patches of greensward all about, with stately trees bearing rich and luscious fruits. Banks of gorgeous flowers were on every hand, and birds with rare and brilliant plumage sang and fluttered in the trees and bushes. A little way off was a small brook, rushing and sparkling along between green banks, and murmuring in a voice very grateful to a little girl who had lived so long on the dry, gray prairies. In their everyday lives, the food they eat is apparently prepared by actual cooks. Neither of those authors would have let the imprisonment drag on for so long, though. Page 1
Chapter 2 : The Emerald City of Oz - Wikipedia The Emerald Wand of Oz is a book by Sherwood Smith and is a continuation of the Oz series that was started by L. Frank Baum in and continued by his many successors. The book is illustrated by William Stout and published by Harper Collins. Apr 24, Nathan Dehoff rated it really liked it This book was good, and quite professionally written. It did seem short, though. The main characters, Dori and Em, are somehow related to Dorothy, but we never actually find out how. I do like the descriptions of her castle, though, and her moronic giant gecko guards. Dori and Em are decent characters. Dori is a dreamer, and has read some of the Oz books. The idea that some Americans in the Oz books have actually read other Oz books is one that dates back to L. Some readers have objected to this idea, but I actually like it. I mean, if these people who have read about Oz eventually get to go there, maybe it could be the same for you or me, you know? The Scarecrow and the Glass Cat have significant roles, though. Neill, who tends to make the Patchwork Girl noticeably meaner and more annoying than other authors do. Sherwood Smith leaves some loose ends, especially considering the disappearance of Dorothy, and some sinister clouds that show up over Oz at various points in the story. Frank Baum Family Trust. This is the first of 2 novels published by HarperCollins as part of that agreement. The second book, Trouble Under Oz, continues where this book leaves off. The story is Sherwood Smith is an award winning author who was contracted by Byron Preiss to write 4 novels as the new Royal Historian of Oz for the L. Like Dorothy, they live in Kansas in an unhappy household. Their parents are separated and they respond to the stress in opposite ways. Em is practical and realistic like her namesake Aunt Em, while Dori is disorganized and imaginative, dreaming of the fairy land her namesake Dorothy once visited. Every Oz story has a visit to at least one strange place filled with amusing but dangerous inhabitants. Dori and Em start their Oz adventure in Unicorn Valley, which is reminiscent of "My Little Pony" with brightly colored unicorns living with children who spend their days grooming and decorating the vain animals. The girls want to get home to Kansas to let their mother know they are alright, so they decide to visit the castle of Glinda the good witch of the south. Only the unicorns, needing groomers, will not let them go. Teaming up with a boy named Rik, and with the help of a freshwater mermaid, they escape Unicorn Valley. Meanwhile, Dori discovers that Rik is after magical tools for his own purposes. Dori and Em must team up with Scraps and other famous non-human Oz characters who are free of the spell in a three-way struggle with Bastinda and Rik to get the emerald wand and break the enchantments. Sherwood Smith devotes 75 pages to Unicorn Valley which makes the first half of the book slow, but the pace picks up and never slackens once the girls leave. This is a wonderful book for anyone who has read L. Page 2
Chapter 3 : The Emerald Wand of Oz (pdf) Paperity The Emerald Wand is a well told story that beautifully combines a literary look at Baum's famous Oz series with a modern story of twin girls who do not get along. Doty and Em are dealing with growing up, divorced parents, and feuding family members. Her castle is described as beautiful instead of being the sinister fortress shown in the movie. In all versions, she is seriously aquaphobic. She shows no interest in the death of the Eastern Witch, and all she cares about is obtaining the Silver Shoes which will increase her power. Frank Baum himself specified that she only had one eye, but that it "was as powerful as a telescope", enabling the witch to see what was happening in her kingdom from her castle windows. Other illustrators, such as Paul Granger, placed her eye in the center of her forehead, as a cyclops. Usually, she is shown wearing an eye patch, however some illustrations show her with two eyes. Most of her power resides in the creatures she controls. She has a pack of wolves, a swarm of bees, a flock of crows, and an army of Winkies. First, the witch commanded the creatures to help her enslave the Winkies and to seize control of the western part of the Land of Oz. Second, she made the winged monkeys drive Oz out of the Winkie Country, when he attempted to overthrow her. When Dorothy Gale and her companions were sent by the Wizard to destroy her, the Witch attacked them with a pack of 40 great wolves, a flock of 40 crows, a swarm of black bees, and a group of Winkie slaves. She therefore settles for enslaving Dorothy, and tries to force the Cowardly Lion into submission by starving him, though Dorothy sneaks him food. When she succeeds in acquiring one silver shoe by making Dorothy trip over an invisible bar, the little girl angrily throws a bucket of water onto the Wicked Witch. This causes the old witch to melt away. Furthermore, when Toto had bitten her, she had not bled; her wickedness had dried her up long ago. Frank Baum did not explain precisely why water had this effect on her, nor did he ever imply that all evil witches could be likewise destroyed. However, the wicked witch Mombi is similarly disposed of in The Lost King of Oz and the wicked witch Singra is clearly afraid of the same fate in the early chapters of The Wicked Witch of Oz. Despite her immense power, she avoids face-to-face contact with her enemies, and is frightened of Dorothy at first when she sees the girl wearing the Silver Shoes. For that reason, the Witch never tried to steal the Silver Shoes while Dorothy was sleeping. Despite her fear of water and the dark, the Wicked Witch of the West was one of the most powerful witches in all of Oz. In ensuing Oz books, her power is described as having been so great that even Glinda the Good Witch of the South feared her. Like in the movie, she is the sister of the Wicked Witch of the East. The name is retained in the musical Wicked. She does not wear an eye-patch like in the novel. This representation of the Wicked Witch has become a standard for what witches resemble and an archetype of human wickedness. She is described by Glinda the Good Witch of the North, not the South as in the book, as "worse than the other one". She actively seeks revenge against Dorothy for killing her sister, even though it was "accidental". She is more menacing than her literary counterpart, making Dorothy too afraid to ever lose her temper with the Witch. She makes sure that Dorothy knows her power when Dorothy meets the Scarecrow by throwing a ball of fire at them. Before Dorothy and her friends get to the city, the Witch casts a sleeping spell over a field of poppies through which the group must pass. Glinda remotely counteracts the spell with a snowfall. The Wicked Witch then flies on her broom over the Emerald City, demanding that the citizens of the Emerald City surrender Dorothy to her, and the Wizard demands the destruction of the Witch, with her broom as proof, in exchange for granting the wishes of Dorothy and her companions. The Golden Cap is not mentioned but, after the failure of her poppy spell, the Witch does hold and then angrily cast away a costume piece that could be considered the cap It greatly resembles the Cap in depicted in W. She is killed when Dorothy throws a bucket of water on her, in attempt to put out a fire the witch bestowed on the Scarecrow. In the novel, Dorothy simply throws it on her in a fit of anger. After the Wicked Witch of the West is dead, her soldiers are glad to be free of her power, and quote "Hail to Dorothy! The Wicked Witch is dead! She is a socialite who owns half the county. She arrives on her bicycle at the farm and says to Uncle Henry, "Mr. Miss Gulch does successfully take Toto away in a basket, but Toto escapes unknown to her. Dorothy calls her a "wicked old witch" and thus, Gulch transforms into the Wicked Witch of the West, flying on a broom, during Page 3
the tornado sequence. Other appearances by Hamilton[ edit ] On a episode of the American television program, Sesame Street, the Witch, once again played by Hamilton herself, drops her broom and falls onto the street. In order to get the broom back, she must prove that she can be nice. Everyone is scared of her, except for Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird. After she proves that she is nice, Big Bird is upset when the time comes for her to leave. The episode was poorly received by parents of frightened young children, and was never aired again. Hamilton also played this witch in The Paul Lynde Halloween Special, and reprised her role several times on stage, most notably at the St. In these appearances, she demonstrated how her costume and acting skills made her appear to be the Witch, and assured her young viewers that there was nothing about her to be feared, because her portrayal in the film was only make-believe. Wicked musical The story line of the stage adaptation "goes far afield" from the novel. After Oscar goes to meet with Glinda, Evanora tricks Theodora into thinking Oscar had betrayed her, offering her a magic apple that will help her forget her disappointment. Theodora immediately takes a bite from it, but afterwards Evanora reveals that she was the evil Witch all along, however Theodora is too late to realize this. Before she can do anything, she starts feeling great pain as the apple was tainted with a potion that removes all the good in her heart making her so evil that even her sister fears her. Her skin turns green as a side effect of the potion, while her nose becomes crooked due to her falling on it. Though Evanora offers to cover it up with an enchantment, Theodora embraces her new appearance and helps her sister attempt to kill Glinda, get revenge on Oscar, and take control of Oz. Theodora is forced to flee the city on her broom, but she threatens to return. However, she refuses and flies off to the West, vowing revenge. Zelena visited Rumplestiltskin Robert Carlyle and learned from him how to control her own powerful magic. She was later thought to have been killed by Rumpelstiltskin. This way, she can resume making Regina Mills suffer by complicating her romantic relationship with the believed widower Robin. Zelena swaps out the Elixir of the Wounded Heart and when Mr. Gold Rumplestiltskin is dying, saves his life with it, but only after he agrees to drop his grudge against her and begins helping her. Regina is informed of this by Rumplestiltskin himself and rushes to New York with Emma. Regina almost has the Author write Zelena and the pregnancy out of existence and memory. Regina changes her mind after she realizes it is something their mother would do, and she can choose to be happy with Robin and the rest of her family, raising the baby herself after the birth. When the Author warps reality to serve his own purposes, the roles of heroes and villains are switched. When Regina is slashed almost fatally by Rumpelstiltskin, Zelena complains she is bleeding on her wedding dress and taking the attention away from her on her wedding day. She begins turning green again and runs off. When reality is returned to normal she is still pregnant in the hospital. Zelena travels with the heroes to Camelot in search of Emma after she becomes the Dark One to save Regina from the same fate. In Camelot, Zelena is threatened by Regina that her baby will be taken by Regina once it has been born. Before she can do anything, she is tricked by Emma and tied by magic around a tree. Arthur and Zelena plan to take a magical helm from the kingdom of DunBroch. Zelena is met by the Dark Swan name for Emma as the Dark One and is told she will need an ally in the town after people learn the truth. Zelena eats darkly enchanted onion rings made by Emma and as a result, her pregnancy is sped up from two months to nine. She gives birth to a baby girl and is taken away by Emma into her basement with Hook at her side. Zelena steps back inside after Emma finds him. Zelena learns that Robin and Regina are allowing her to see her baby, as long as one of them is with her. This is when she shares a bonding moment with her child. Dorothy tries to knock Zelena out with poppy powder, but before she does, Zelena puts her under a sleeping curse. Now in possession of the silver slippers, she goes back to Storybrooke and assumes the form of the Blue Fairy to trick Belle into giving her back her daughter, who is residing at the convent with the fairies. During their conversation, a portal to the Underworld appears and Belle, holding the baby, goes through it. In a desperate attempt not to lose her daughter again, Zelena jumps through it. However, due to a sprained ankle and her diminished magic in the Underworld, Zelena is helpless as Belle runs away with her daughter. Regina reunites with Zelena in the underworld where it is revealed that Zelena and Hades have a romantic history. The sisters eventually become close as she tries to change for her daughter. She names the baby Robyn after her father. Zelena goes into the mines to confront her, but is held back by Regina, who does not trust her to take care of the situation. The Black Fairy takes control of the unstable magic Zelena uses to attack the fairy, Page 4
and uses it to fuel crystals with dark magic. Regina takes her frustration out on Zelena after they leave the mines, and tells her to go back to Oz. Zelena eventually regains her magic after a confrontation between herself, Robyn, Mother Gothel and Nook the wish realm version of Captain Hook. The record features both original songs and songs from the MGM film. In The Wiz, its film version, and television special, the Wicked Witch of the West is given the name Evillene portrayed by Mabel King in both the original Broadway cast and the film and Mary J. Blige in the television special. She is the malevolent ruler of the Winkies. In the film version, she runs a sweatshop under Yankee Stadium with the slogan "Manufacturers and Exporters of Sweat" and extracts it not only from the Winkies, but the Crows, the Poppy Girls, and the Subway Peddler. Her magic creates urban variations on the Kalidahs depicted as evil growing dolls sent by the Subway Peddler, Fighting Trees depicted as mobile pillars and the wolves depicted as living and carnivorous trash cans, all in the Subway system. She then sends the Flying Monkeys depicted as a biker gang to capture Dorothy and her friends. In the anime film The Wizard of Oz, the Witch voiced by Elizabeth Hanna is purple-skinned, white-haired, and wears an eyepatch similar to W. However, her telescopic eye is replaced by a magic mirror. 6 Chapter 4 : The Emerald Wand of Oz by Sherwood Smith (, Hardcover) ebay The Emerald Wand of Oz is a Oz book written by Sherwood Smith and illustrated by William Stout. It is the first in the series of new Oz novels commissioned by the Baum Family Trust. Em and Dori are two descendants of Dorothy Gale, who are mourning their parents' separation. Plot summary[ edit ] At the beginning of this story, it is made quite clear that Dorothy Gale the primary protagonist of many of the previous Oz books, is in the habit of freely speaking of her many adventures in the Land of Oz to her only living relatives, her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Neither of them believes a word of her stories, but consider her a dreamer, as her dead mother had been. Later, it is revealed that the destruction of their farmhouse by the tornado back in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has left Uncle Henry in terrible debt. In order to pay it, he has taken out a mortgage on his farm. If he cannot repay his creditors, they will seize the farm, thus leaving Henry and his family homeless. Upon learning this, Dorothy quickly arranges with Princess Ozma to let her bring her guardians to Oz where they will be very happier and forever safe. They are given rooms to live in and luxuries to enjoy, including a vast and complex wardrobe. After ordering the expulsion of his General who will not agree to such an attack and the death of his Colonel who also refuses, King Roquat holds counsel with a veteran soldier called Guph. Guph believes that against the many magicians of Oz the reputation of which has grown in the telling, the Nome Army has no chance alone. He therefore sets out personally to recruit allies. Dorothy, accompanied by the Wizard of Oz and several other friends, departs the Emerald City in a carriage drawn by the Wooden Sawhorse, intending to give her aunt and uncle a tour of the land. Many of the people encountered have never been seen in other books: The living cut-out paper dolls created by an immortal called Miss Cuttenclip. The anthropomorphic jigsaw puzzles known as the Fuddles. The living kitchen utensils of Utensia. The anthropomorphic pastries of Bunbury. The civilized rabbits of Bunnybury. A zebra who holds geographical disputes with a crab. Other figures, more familiar to readers of previous books, include the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow, as well as the four tribes of Oz the Munchkins, the Quadlings, the Gillikins, and the Winkies. The Nome General Guph visits three nations: The Whimsies are large and hulking, but possess disproportionately small heads. This causes other species to call them stupid, stripping them of any self-esteem. To deny this, the Whimsies wear enormous, luridly designed masks that cover all of their heads. The Growleywogs are muscular giants, possessing no surplus flesh and no mercy. They are arrogant and cruel. As such, they are eager not only to help the Nomes conquer Oz, but also to subjugate the Nomes as well. Of the latter plan, they say nothing, but send Guph on his way. Last of his meetings is that which is with the mysterious, diabolical Phanfasms. To Guph, the Phanfasms resemble men, but having the heads of various carnivorous animals. Their true forms, number, standard of living, culture, and extent of influence remain unknown to both Guph and the reader, although both receive hints in the narrative. The Phanfasms send Guph home, telling him that they will conquer Oz alongside the other armies. It is their plan to do so, then to turn traitor and dominate their allies. The climax takes place in the Emerald City, where Ozma wishes using her magic belt for a large amount of dust to appear in the tunnel. The Nome King and his allies are defeated after they drink thirstily from the Fountain of Oblivion and forget all their evil plans. Ozma uses the magic belt to send the Nome King and his allies home. To forestall a future invasion of Oz, Glinda the Good Witch uses a magic charm to render Oz invisible and unreachable to everyone except those within the land itself. Commentary[ edit ] The Emerald City of Oz contains more material on the social organization of Oz than most of the earlier books, and as a consequence has attracted commentary on its Utopian aspects. How far such analyses and comparisons should be pursued is of course open to debate; as Baum writes of the social structure of Oz in Chapter Three, p. In, a straight-to-video animated adaptation was made in Canada. Riley, Oz and Beyond: The Fantasy World of L. Boyer and Kenneth J.
