Page 1 of 5 Read HG Wells short story, which can be found at Then, without looking back at the story, answer the following questions: 1 Wells set his story in a kind of utopia, or, as some have coined the word, dystopia Why do you think this is so? 2 What is the very first thing the man notices that strikes him as most odd about the valley? 3 How does the man get his name? 4 What two things do the first people he encounters comment on about his physical appearance? 5 What is the irony of the man protesting that he can see, when the people wish to lead him to see the elders? 6 How does the man s attempted coup d etat end? 7 How does the man s adjustment to life in the valley mirror that of the people of the valley, over the generations they have been there? 8 Why does the man find Medina-sarote beautiful when the people of the valley find her ugly? 9 What is the only advantage, in the end, that the man finds for having sight? 10 Explain the irony of this line: He held her in his arms, and pressed his lips to hers and looked on her sweet face for the last time 11 What is Wells doing in the final paragraph of the story? What is the irony in this? 12 The people of the valley have been cut off from outside contact for 14 generations over 400 years Yet the man is able to communicate with them from his very first encounter with relative ease Do you find this convincing? 13 What almost certainly happens to the man at the end of the story? Does this affect your judgment of his choice? 14 The final line of the story is: And the glow of the sunset passed, and the night came, and still he lay there, under the cold, clear stars Explain how, if at all, you feel that this line provides summary and closure to the story 15 Write a story about what happens to Medina-sarote after she realizes that her lover is not coming back 16 Write a story, in the style of, where an apparent obvious advantage turns out to be a handicap instead You could use one of the other four senses, but it would be better to use something else entirely For example, you could write a story about a group of friends traveling in a strange country, where only one of them speaks the local language but being able to speak the language turns out not to be to his advantage

Page 2 of 5 17 Starting at the upper left-hand corner and working your way to the lower right-hand corner, see if you can connect square to square to construct a coherent paragraph of commentary about The Country of the Blind You can move in any direction, including diagonally; but you can only visit a square once, and you cannot hop over or skip any squares Punctuation has been included but not capitalization for the start of sentences Extra words and punctuation have been added to make things interesting! The main two has so what : in something thing deeper of do one no when I on picture that the irony sight not creature beast winning it imagine at I looks plan story might have appreciate alien losing an alien, the a could is begin who the an art with creature with little same upon that we we gift seen have threatened cannot we time bit we happen have that never never are we miss me like within until to unto known have we that a capital word among outside lose until I inside thing the likewise have been told it or indeed? people plan the bird we or things we envision seen story the of for of that things imagine cannot we have cannot can could can make try lies anything or could such imagine not tried to if I to entirely nearly heard have a yesterday since do argument each through jump within outside purely we thing after because whenever at the hoop but of find to attempt things as the of step each we bearings our fear if of sight way source of our common are experience the combining able recombining is world to affliction To imagination but to and be to it could the blind be is What see outside his not is should if into the one which that is their their outside source have entered by struggle realm lies it world experience imagination with it has is tale The of beyond the so of just king that this greatest madness lies it if every sight one eye the of of metaphor

Page 3 of 5 ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS 1 Wells was making the point that it is possible to have an ideal society without something so apparently essential as sight 2 The houses have no windows 3 The people of the valley misunderstand his strange speech and assume that the name of the distant city is actually his name 4 The strange organs he has on his face, under the fluttering lids, and the coarseness of his hair 5 He turns to look at the person he is speaking to, only to stumble against the man s pail This convinces the people even more that he needs to be carefully led 6 He finds himself cold and starving among the rocks and must return to the valley to beg for food 7 His world shrinks until it is the valley The world beyond the valley becomes less and less real to him 8 Her eyes are not shrunken like most of the other people of the valley; they look merely closed, rather than withered away Her skin was not glossy smooth, as the blind people prized; but her features were clear cut 9 His ability to throw a quick punch means that people don t try to pick any more fights with him 10 It really is the last time he will see her, but not for the reasons that the reader supposes at the time 11 He is painting in words a particularly detailed picture of the surrounding scenery The irony is that, for as much as the man has preserved his sight by fleeing the valley, he pays no attention to the beauty around him 12 After 400 years, their language would have been very difficult for him to understand, until he got used to it Consider the Elizabethan English of a Shakespeare play: until you listen to it a while or read it a while, it s very hard to understand So I think that Wells underplayed the man s difficulties 13 He dies He has chosen freedom from the valley even though the price is nearly certain death This is particularly obvious in light of his previous attempt to escape the valley, when he decided to go back It still seems to me that he is facing his situation and his choice clearly; in the end, he is not willing to give up his sight for life and love 14 The final line captures the man s contentment, simply to be alive and to have held onto this one thing most precious to him The feeling is like that of the end of a movie You can almost see the camera panning back, zooming out so that the man becomes a smaller and smaller dot among the snow-capped mountaintops

Page 4 of 5 17 The deeper irony of the story is that we who have sight do not appreciate the gift that we have until we happen to lose it or until we are threatened with losing it At the same time, we cannot miss a thing that we have never known Indeed we cannot imagine anything that lies entirely outside of our experience What is imagination but the combining and recombining of things we have heard or things we have been told or things we have seen? I have never seen an alien creature No one has So when I imagine an alien creature, I picture something that looks a little bit like me Likewise the people of the story cannot imagine such a thing as sight It is outside their experience so it is outside their imagination It has entered into the realm of madness A copy of the maze, showing only the words and punctuation that are needed to form the above paragraph, is on the next page

Page 5 of 5 The has so something deeper of do one no when I picture that the irony sight not creature it imagine at I looks story have appreciate alien losing an alien, the a is who the an with creature little same that we we gift seen have threatened cannot we time bit we happen have that never never are we miss me like until to known have we that a lose until I thing the likewise have been told it or indeed? people we or things we seen story the of that things imagine cannot we have cannot lies anything or such imagine entirely heard have a outside we thing of things as our of sight experience combining recombining imagination but the and it is What outside is into the is their their outside entered realm it experience imagination it has of so madness
