1 Course Title: 6 th Grade Science Text: Science 6 for Christian Schools, 3rd Edition 6 Science 2013 Duration: 2 semesters Frequency: daily 40 minutes Year: Other materials/additional resources: Science 6 Activity Manual; vocabulary cards Areas to be evaluated: activity sheets and study guides in activity manual; chapter tests Additional activities: vocabulary games bingo, tic-tac-toe, memory, and Go Fish Course goals: Students will: -understand the various physical attributes of the earth -note the ways in which all creation fits together -recognize that creation has patterns that allow organisms to be classified -understand the patterns of classifications -examine and discuss the topics of atoms, molecules electricity, magnetism, motion, and machines -recognize the wonderful way God holds our universe together -discover the importance of gravity on celestial bodies and the vast distances in the universe -examine God s marvelous universe the Sun, stars, planets, and other objects in space -learn about how God uses factors such as DNA to create unique offspring -see the marvels of the human body and how God cares for us Course explanation: Sixth grade Science at Berean Academy is a course designed to develop a knowledge of God, encourage Christian growth, and promote scientific literacy. The course will establish the understanding that God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, identify the orderliness and precision of God s creation, and inspire curiosity, wonder, and appreciation of God s creation. It will promote disciplined and orderly approaches to problem solving, teach cooperative skills through group activities, and challenge students to be good stewards of God s creation. The course will also establish foundational science facts and skills for further science instruction, teach processes involved in a scientific method, show how science can be integrated into the student s everyday life, and promote a positive attitude toward science. Unit 1: A Changing Earth (Chapters 1, 2, and 3) Chapter 1: Earthquakes and Volcanoes Chapter 2: Weathering and Erosion Chapter 3: Natural Resources Time frame: 45 days (15 days per chapter) -explain the theory of plate tectonics; identify the causes of earthquakes; understand how earthquakes are detected and measured; identify the causes and locations of volcanoes; examine the effects of volcanoes (chapter 1) -analyze, identify, and classify the different types of weathering; list the agents of erosion; list the types of erosion; identify the causes of erosion (chapter 2) -identify types of energy resources; differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable resources; asses and recommend ways to preserve our resources (chapter 3) - Mount Saint Helens video (optional)

2 -God as Master of creation and His use of creation for His glory and His purposes -God s use of forces for Earth s benefit -Man s use of God s resources and as a steward of God s resources Unit 2: God s Living Creation (Chapters 4, 5, and 6) Chapter 4: Cells and Classification Chapter 5: Animal Classification Chapter 6: Plant Classification Time frame: 45 days (15 days per chapter) -understand the basic structure and function of living things (chapter 4) -explain how living things are classified scientifically (chapter 4) -explore how organisms in the kingdom Animalia are grouped according to similar characteristics (chapter 5) -explain how plants are divided according to similar characteristics (chapter 6) -understand the basic structures of plants (chapter 6) -God s perfect, orderly design; perfect creation; and variety in creation -Man s finite knowledge and God-given dominion -God s care and provision for His creation

3 Unit 3: Energy in Motion (Chapters 7, 8, and 9) Chapter 7: Atoms and Molecules Chapter 8: Electricity and Magnetism Chapter 9: Motion and Machines Time frame: 45 days (15 days per chapter) -examine and explain the structure of the atom (chapter 7) -relate the atom to the flow of electrons that produce the electricity (chapter 8) -explain how chemical energy and electrical energy can be changed into mechanical energy (chapter 9) -God s creation of invisible forces -God s perfect, orderly design of creation -Man s finite knowledge -Man as steward of God s creation

4 Unit 4: Beyond Our Earth (Chapters 10 and 11) Chapter 10: Stars Chapter 11: Solar System Time frame: 24 days (12 days per chapter) -discuss stars and star groups as well as asteroids, meteoroids, and comets (chapter 10) -explain some of the ways that man learns about the universe (chapter 10) -examine the solar system (chapter 11) -discuss the most important star to man, the Sun, as well as some of the distinctive features of Earth, the Moon, and other planets (chapter 11) -God s omniscience and omnipotence -God s use of creation for His purposes and His glory -God s variety in creation -God s perfect and orderly design Unit 5: God s Continuing Plan (Chapters 12 and 13) Chapter 12: Plant and Animal Reproduction Chapter 13: Heredity and Genetics Time frame: 24 days (12 days per chapter) -discuss and examine God s plan for reproduction plant and animal reproduction and asexual reproduction (chapter 12) -explain how an organism inherits traits from parents (chapter 13)
