3 COTTENHAM IN FOCUS Twenty-five years ago, Francis Garrett wrote a booklet entitled COTTENHAM A Glimpse into the Past. It was part of the Cottenham Village Society s contribution to mark the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. This small booklet was the first of a series of Village Society publications which are currently sold in Shaun s newsagency and the Cambridge Building Society. Cottenham residents are obviously interested in local history. Francis was already well known for his double act with Mervyn Haird, as these two gentlemen have been entertaining Cottenham with their slide show and local history presentations since Many of the shows have a Then and Now format, with Mervyn showing slides of modern Cottenham alongside slides made from old negatives. Francis accompanies the slides with a commentary that includes plenty of information about the village as well as interesting tales of personalities and events. As the Village Society s contribution to the Golden Jubilee celebrations, we have produced a new book, entitled Cottenham in Focus A Pictorial History, based on these presentations. About 200 old photographs and illustrations have been chosen to accompany the text, which has been arranged so that it can either be used on a walk down memory lane or as a handbook to accompany a stroll around the village. Our intention is to enable readers to juxtapose today s streets with bygone Cottenham. Francis Garrett and Mervyn Haird After a short introduction the reader starts from the Green and proceeds along the High Street to All Saints Church and Twentypence Road. The return route allows the reader to explore the lanes and side streets. A map of the village has been included, with the kind permission of Eddie Murphy of the Cottenham Newsletter. The final sections of the book look at the village and its surrounding area as a whole. Do you know why Double Cottenham Cheese is no longer produced? Did you know that Cottenham once had four windmills? We also had two different Feasts. Can you remember Feast Week in the 1920 s? Some of the buildings shown in the photographs are immediately recognisable, but others have long been demolished. Cottenham is a living village, an active and growing community, so changes are inevitable. Our population has more than doubled since the Second World War. New streets have been constructed and people and businesses have come and gone. The aim of this book is to celebrate Cottenham, its people, its history, and the two gentlemen who have brought our village into focus for the last 40 years.
