White paper on CAR150 millimeter wave radar Abstract:CAR150 is a 24GHz K-band compact long-range radar sensor developed by Hunan Nanoradar Science and Technology Co., Ltd. It adopts reliable solid-state technology, with the advantages of long range-measurement, accurate speed-measurement, high sensitivity, easy integration and high performance. Due to its functions of range-measurement and collision avoidance, it is widely applied in ACC (adaptive cruise control), FCW (forward collision warning) and AEB (automatic emergency braking). Key words:car150,accurate velocity-measurement,lrr mmw radar, high cost-efficient 1 Applications of long-range radar in automotive 1.1 The development of advanced driver assistant system Nowadays, cars are becoming more and more popular, which play a more and more important role in people's travel. The Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS) utilizes a wide range of sensors mounted on the vehicle to sense the surrounding environment, collect data, recognize the static and moving objects, detect and track, and carry out the calculation and analysis with the combination of navigation map data, which in advance makes the driver be aware of the possible dangers, and effectively increases the comfort and safety of driving. ADAS has a rapidly increasing demand in recent years. It gradually enters into the low-end market from the high-end market. And the improved millimeter-wave radar technology is creating new opportunities and strategies for the system deployment. 1.2 Demand for automotive forward detection The traditional driver assistance system mainly consists of laser radar, visual system, GPS and other modules. The modules in bad weather conditions, cannot accurately detect the surrounding obstacles, which often lead to serious traffic accidents. Besides, the detection distance of visual system is limited, which could not focus on all the targets in the field of view. Millimeter-wave radar has the characteristics of operating in all weather and all day, and also has the advantages of long detection distance and high detection accuracy, which plays an important role in the automotive forward target detection system. At the same time, with the integration of visual and laser modules, it constitutes the ADAS system, which gradually becomes a new direction for active safety. WP003(v1.0)
2 Product overview of CAR150 long-range radar 2.1 Product features CAR150 is a very cost-effective long-range millimeter-wave radar sensor system, which adopts solid-state technology and has a strong shock resistance, with a detection range of 150 meters. It utilizes LFMCW modulation mode, which can detect the distance, velocity of a moving object and has a high accuracy for range and velocity Measurement. Movement Velocity Distance Direction Angle CAR150 has the functions of range measurement and collision avoidance. And it can be widely applied in ACC (adaptive cruise control), FCW (forward collision warning and AEB (automatic emergency braking). The CAN communication network interface of CAR150 sensor follows the specification in ISO , with a communication speed of 500Kb/s. The universal external communication interface is convenient for the integration with the host computer or other ADAS module. 2.2 Product specifications Product outline of CAR150 is as followings: Dimensions:193x96x38(mm) Weight:<350g Figure 1 CAR150 multidimensional sketch WP003(v1.0)
Table 1 CAR150 Radar parameters PARAMETER CONDITIONS MIN TYP MAX UNITS System performance Transmit frequency GHz Output power(eirp) Output adjustable 24 dbm Modulation type LFMCW Update rate 20 Hz Power DC W Range-measurement characteristics Distance-measuring dbsm trucks m Distance-measuring dbsm vehicles m Distance-measuring dbsm pedestrians m Distance-measuring accuracy ±0.2 m Velocity-measurement characteristics Velocity-measuring range m/s Velocity-measuring accuracy 0.3 m/s Multi-target tracking Numbers of simultaneously tracked targets 8 pcs Range resolution 0.75 m Antenna performance Beam width /TX Azimuth(-6dB) 31 deg Elevation(-6dB) 13 deg Beam width /RX Azimuth(-6dB) 98 deg Elevation(-6dB) 13 deg Other characteristics Supply voltage V DC Supply ma Storage temperature Operating temperature The antennas of CAR150 are highly efficient series of microstrip antenna array. They contains two transmit antennas and four receive antennas, which are corresponding to two transmitting channels and four receiving channels. And the separation design of transmitting / receiving antennas makes the transmitting / receiving link of the radar have high isolation Two transmitting antennas transmit high frequency radar signals in time-sharing manner, while four receiving antennas receive target echoes at the same time. The receiver utilizes DBF technology to process the baseband signal, which is equivalent to 8 channels of receiving channels, greatly increasing the angle resolution. The design of low side lobes for the transmitting and receiving antennas on the pitch plane, which is superior to the 20dB side lobe suppression ratio, greatly reduces the interference of targets such as near ground clutter and traffic signs above the road. WP003(v1.0)
2.3 Product applications Automotive adaptive cruise control Automatic guide for autopilot driving Radar video fusion system Anti-collision control for special vehicles Demonstration teaching Airspeed warning 3 Typical application examples 3.1 Automotive forward collision warning (FCW) FCW (Forward Collision Warning) is a high-level security assistance system that detects the potential collision risk by sensing and calculating the distance between the vehicle and the forward vehicle during travel. When the detection distance D <TTC (system-set safety value), it will immediately send out a warning. FCW has significant practical safety effects when the driver is distracted from the situation in front of him, or when he or she is tired or is using a mobile phone. CAR150 is installed in the right center of the front bumper of the passenger vehicle, with the azimuth of 0. If the height of the sensor is less than 50cm, its elevation angle should be 1.5, while when it is more than 50cm, elevation angle should be 0. And it can achieve the moving targets detection of trucks within 150m, passenger car within 100 meters and pedestrian within 60 meters. Distance-measurement:150m Azimuth:31 Velocity-measurement range : -70~70m/s Figure2 radar beam sketch Figure3 applications in FCW CAR150 can detect up to 8 moving targets simultaneously, and has sufficient detection of pedestrians and vehicles in the field of view. Therefore it greatly reduces the driving burden for drivers. Advantages of CAR150 in FCW applications: WP003(v1.0)
1) With compact package and solid-state technology; 2) High cost-effective, and long detection distance; 3) Light weight and small size; 4) Leading performance and durability. 4 Conclusion CAR150 is currently the first self-developed long-distance automotive millimeter-wave radar in domestic. It adopts advanced MMIC and signal processing technology, with the advantages of long distance measurement, accurate velocity measurement and stable performance, which can be widely used in automotive forward collision warning, adaptive Cruise, radar/video fusion and other fields, greatly enhancing the driver's operating convenience, reducing the driver's driving burden and reducing the probability of accidents and injuries.
