7 1. General Redox measurement is used in chemical industry, in swimming-pools, potable and waste water treatment and also in different kinds of industrial measurements.controlmatik probe M 1322 is designed for continuous measurement of redox in swimming-pools, potable, waste and industrial waters. With special versions of measuring electrodes it can also be used for measurement of other media. The unit consists of redox measuring electrode and graphic display. Electronics evaluates and amplifies the measured potential. The probe can be equipped with SELECAN communication output or with the galvanicly separated 4 20 ma signal on the amplifiers output. PI regulator that independently controls a certain process, can be build in a probe. The user can easily communicate with a probe over graphic display and four function keys. All this guarantees accurate and continuous measurement. Redox measuring electronics 7

8 1.1 Assembly Mounting of electronics. 8

9 1.2 Storage of Redox probes The Redox probes which will not be used for a certain period of time (winter period), must be adequately stored due to low temperatures (damaged due to the water freezing) and the possibility of draining of the measuring membranes. The probes should be dismounted from the measuring area. Pour the distilled water or KCl (potassium chloride) into the protection cap, supplied with the new electrode, and slowly push on the electrode. If you do not have the protection caps, place the electrodes into a glass of distilled water. Place the protection lid onto the probe connector (this prevents the entry of moisture into the connector). If there is no protection lid on the connector, store the probes in a dry space. Dismounted electrodes should be stored in a space where winter temperatures do not fall under 0 C. 9

Connect the voltage through the 5-pole connector on ECP00266 cable to the connector on the instrument (CONNECTION). All such connectors have a code indicator and can therefore only be connected if turned the right way. The connectors on the cable are to be gently and correctly put on the connectors on the instrument and the fixing nut is to be gently turned. 14 1.5 CAN network Sele CAN All CAN communication units (PLC control units, sensors, valves ) in SELECAN versions of communication must have parallel wiring. The maximum number of CAN communication units connected in this way must not exceed 64. CAN network consist of three signals: CAN H (CAN +), CAN L (CAN -) and CAN GND Segment connection (RECOMMENDED) The most recommended wiring is shown in the drawing below. The main communication line is divided into segments. CAN communication units A - I (PLC control units, sensors, valves ) are connected via CAN distributors 1-6. Terminators (T), which are connected to CAN H (CAN +) and CAN L (CAN -), must be placed at the beginning and at the end. The main CAN network is divided into more segmental networks. When dividing the main CAN network into segmental networks, you must pay attention to the length of the segment; the length of the segment depends on data flow velocity. One segment is marked in the picture above and in the tables on the following page total cable length can be determined. The tables are stated for cables with 5 ns/m and 10 ns/m time delay. It is evident from the table below that when using a cable with 5ns/m time delay and data flow velocity of 20Kbit/s, the total segment length can be up to 150 m; the length of the cable made of all in this way connected segments must not exceed 750 m. The length of the cable, which is used to connect CAN distributors 1 and 2 and all CAN communication units plugged to CAN distributor 2 (PLC control units, sensors, valves ), is considered the total segment length. 14

16 1.5.4 Terminators The terminators are ohmic resistors, which are to be connected between CAN_H in CAN_L at the beginning and the end of the CAN network. 23 1.9 What do you need to know Important!!! Upon startup, the conditioning electrode needs at least 2 hours of operation on water. At least once every 14 days, check the accuracy of the redox measurement and calibrate the instrument if necessary. The procedure of electrode positioning and calibration should be repeated: after every cleaning of the measuring electrode, or if the M 1322 redox measuring instrument has not been in operation for more than a week. 23

24 2. Settings 2.1 Calibration Do not calibrate the Redox potential! Occasionally, only check its accuracy with the assistance of standards. If the deviation is greater than 30, clean the measuring electrode. If the measurement deviation after the cleaning is not decreased to the satisfactory value, replace the electrode with a new one. 24

Before beginning the procedure for calculating the PI regulator parameters, the analyzer must be in operation for at least 24 hours, and must be properly calibrated Calculation when chlorinating the water in the pipes 1. If the regulator is in operation, stop it and wait for the value of chlorine at the analyzer to drop to 0.00 mg/l. 2. Calculate the theoretical value of the regulator out according to the following equations: 94

95 g Chlorine flow Re h gulator out g Rotameter max imum h [%] = 100% 3. Start up the regulator in the manual mode with the calculated value Regulator out calculated from the previous step. If necessary, adjust the regulator to such a value to reach the reference point. Record the value of the regulator out. 4. Stop the regulator and wait for the chlorine value on the analyzer to drop to 0.00 mg/l again. 5. Restart the regulator with the manual value that you recorded. Measure the period of time since the start of the regulator until the reference point range. The time measured is the Set time Tn. 6. Calculate the Proportional range Xp according to the following equations: [%] Re gulator manual value Kp = 100% 1 Proportional range Xp = 100 % Kp 7. Enter the parameters Xp and Tn, as described in the chapter Setting the PI regulator parameters. Note that the parameters are calculated theoretically, therefore you should follow the operation of the regulator and, if necessary, adjust the parameters (Xp and Tn). For easier comprehension, several graphs showing the system response regarding the values of the Xp and Tn parameters are shown. 95

96 96

97 Calculation of the PI regulator parameters for pools and reservoirs In order to calculate the regulator parameters, the response times of the pool system must be measured. The measurement of response times of the out-door pool system should be performed in sunny weather, while the measurement of the in-door pool can be performed at any time during the day. When measuring the response times of the pool system, the amount of free chlorine may exceed the limit values! Measuring should be performed in a pool without swimmers! The free chlorine analyzer should be calibrated in advance! First of all, a low enough and a stable value of free chlorine in the pool must be ensured. It is ideal that the pool water be without free chlorine. If that cannot be achieved, set the regulator out to 0% and wait for the free chlorine value on the analyzer to drop under 0.10 mg/l. At that point, record the time on your watch in the table under the marking T 0 and set the regulator out to 100%. When the free chlorine value on the analyzer starts to increase, record the free chlorine value under»xs«, and the time on your watch under»t 1 «in the table. Wait for the free chlorine value on the analyzer to reach the value of the desired reference point (e.g. 0.45mg/l for pools) and record the latter under»xw«, as well as the time on your watch under»t 2 «. Then, set the regulator out to 0%. Wait for the free chlorine value on the analyzer to stop increasing and record the latter under»xt«, as well as the time on your watch under»t 3 «. If the measurement was successful, calculate the parameters according to the equations below and enter them into the regulator settings. 97
