2 1. PURPOSE The purpose of this SIL is to provide operators with advice on possible improvement of radio-altimeter antenna connector protection against water penetration. 2. BACKGROUND Some operators have reported presence of water and/or foreign liquid on radio-altimeter antenna connectors. As a possible consequence the water may get inside the connector and coaxial cable causing the attenuation or loss of the radio frequency signal. As a result the radio-altimeter operation might be affected (for example: no altitude in approach/landing phase, without warning or fault in the cockpit) 3. DESCRIPTION: 3.1 Antenna removal: Remove the radio altimeter antennas ( remove the sealant from the heads of the screws, remove the attachment screws, pull the antenna, remove the lock wire if installed, disconnect the coaxial connector, remove the antenna ). Ref AMM pb 401 (procedure for removal/installation of the radio-altimeter antennas). 3.2 Antenna preparation: On the Collins antenna RAA 700 P/N or -003 and on the Honeywell antenna ANA 52B P/N , install a sticky heat shrink sleeve ref ABS 0916B07 or equivalent 10 mm Long on the antenna connector ( covering the antenna cylindrical part of the TNC connector, in order to compensate the small diameter of the antenna connector ). On Thales ANT 140 P/N and ANT 140A P/N , it is not necessary. If installed, check the teflon gasket and replace it if necessary. ( see hereafter picture 1 ) PAGE: 2 of 10

4 3.3 Inspection of the antenna boot:! Remove a part of the floor to reach the area near the radio altimeter antenna. Each antenna is protected inside the A/C by a boot. Remove for inspection the antenna boot. Replace it if it is cracked or damaged. 3.4 Inspection of the pipe: Check if the pipe is not deformed or cracked on the A/C structure side and replace it if necessary. Check if the the pipe is correctly sealed otherwise proceed as follows: - Remove the protective pipe(s) per the SRM instructions (for A318, A319, A320, A321, A330, A340) and (for A310, A ). - Remove any local corrosion of the fuselage skin per the SRM instructions (for A318, A319, A320, A321, A330, A340) and (for A310, A ). - Restore surface protection per the SRM instructions (A318, A319, A320, A321, A330, A340) and (for A310, A ). - Apply a layer of soft sealant PR1436GB (CML ) in 4 different areas of the pipe: (1) Between the pipe and the aircraft skin. (2) Around the outer flange of the pipe. (3) In the inner gap at the base of the protection pipe and of the aircraft skin. (4) Over the head of the 6 rivets fastening the pipe. - Fasten the new pipe per the SRM instructions Refer to the following drawings: PAGE: 4 of 10

5 3.5 Inspection of the coaxial cables: Make sure that the coaxial connector and the coaxial cable are free of moisture or corrosion. If not replace the connector and cut the contaminated part of the coaxial cable. CAUTION: Two repairs per cable maximum for radio-altimeter systems (Refer ESPM ). Install the boot around the coaxial cable without securing it. 3.6 Protection on the antenna connector: Install a sticky heat shrink sleeve ref ABS 0916B08 or equivalent 80 mm Long on the antenna connector (covering, the first part of the sticky heat shrink sleeve already installed on the RAA700 and ANA 52B antennas only, the antenna cylindrical part of the TNC connector, and the first centimeters of the coaxial cable ). Connect the coaxial connector to the antenna connector with the correct tightening torque and without lockwire. Heat the sleeve when in place. Refer to ESPM and for heat shrink sleeve installation. 7 Apply some sealant ref PR 1422 or 1776A over the ends of the heat shrink sleeves and also on the antenna body ( inner part up to the o-ring ). Let the sealant cure. ( see hereafter photo 3 ). Photo 3 PN PR1422 or 1776A PAGE: 7 of 10

On all antennas apply at the periphery of the antenna flange a 3 mm wide approx interface sealant ref PQ-100-10-021-00. ( see hereafter photo 4 ). 3.7 Installation of the Radio Altimeter antenna.

Put the antenna in position and install the screws on the fuselage with the correct tightening torque. Apply masking tape on the screw holes antenna and around the antenna. Make a sealing bead with sealant ref PQ around the antenna. Remove the excess of sealant and smooth the sealant around the antenna. Remove the masking tape. Let the sealant cure. PAGE: 8 of 10

3.8 Improved installation of the antenna boot Reach the radio altimeter antenna area from inside the aircraft. Install the bottom part of the boot on the pipe.

9 3.8 Improved installation of the antenna boot Reach the radio altimeter antenna area from inside the aircraft. Install the bottom part of the boot on the pipe. If necessary install a new metallic collar ref ASNA 0032H052. Install a metallic collar ( in place of the cable tie ) ref ASNA 0032H022 on the upper end of the boot with elastomer strip ref ABS 5334 if a gap is noticed. This elastomer strip is used in order to fully fill the gap between the coaxial cable and the boot upper hole. The gap depends on the coaxial cable type used (XS or WD). see hereafter picture 5 ABS 5334 ASNA 0032H Check of the draining ports Ensure that draining ports close to antennas are operating : See AMM task P.Block 601 for A310/A aircraft See AMM task for A319/A320/A321 aircraft.
