14 Characteristics & benefits of the new frequency Signal damping in media with small DCs The larger the frequency, the bigger the signal damping in a medium with small DC value (e.g. in hydrocarbons). Together with the increased range resolution of FMCW, this allows faster separation between level- and obstacle signals. To minimize effects of tank wall and obstacles of 6 and 26GHz devices, the electromagnetic field of the emitted microwave has to be aligned during installation Thanks to the small signal beam of 80GHz, multi-path propagation is negligible no antenna alignment during installation required 6GHz 80GHz Slide 18

19 Difference in envelope curve shape High pass filter Amplifier Low pass filter A D A D Signal processin g Distance/ level The intermediate frequency (distance information / output of mixer) gets filtered and amplified in order to adapt the input for the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) 1) Antenna near field High pass filter to permanently suppress low frequency disturbance signals. As a result, also effect of antenna deposit (e.g. due to condensation or build-up) is reduced 2) Noise level 7-stage adaptive amplifier used to optimize the level signal at different distances. Beside the amplification of the level signal amplitude, the position of the noise level varies slightly 3) Signal shape As a benefit of FMCW radars with large bandwidth (4GHz) the signal shape is sharper compared to a pulse radar s signal with comparable amplitude Summary: Signal curves of a pulse- and FMCW radars are not 1:1 comparable!
