A Systems Approach to Electronic Product Development Steven Dunbar Analog Field Applications Texas Instruments
4899 : Agenda Thank an Engineer! Who is this guy Steve Dunbar, anyway??? Field Applications, Systems Engineer, TI Abstract Systems Approach to Design A little about TI Questions? Comments?
4899 : Steve s Resume (short) University of Colorado, BS-ECE University of Texas, Arlington, MS-EE Motorola, Fort Worth, TX Inovonics Wireless, Louisville, CO RF Micro Devices, Broomfield, CO 2007-Present Texas Instruments Analog Field Applications Engineer 2000-Present Occasional Consultant 2 US Patents, another in the works. Several trade publications and app notes.
4899 Abstract As electrical engineers we often focus most of our attention on the electronic details of the projects we work on. However, most projects are much more involved than just the electronics. Energy, mechanical, software, and many other subsystems and required to operate in harmony to create a useful device, and usually there are multiple solutions that need to be considered. This case study will review an extremely simple product and the implications for the various sub-systems involved.
4899 : What s in it for you? How many of you plan to get an EE degree and obtain a lucrative professional EE career???
4899 : 2 Classes of Projects There are generally two classes of Electronics projects: For Profit Usually mass produced, factory automated production Price pressure, cost sensitive Engineering is a business related expense For Performance Usually very low volume, or just one (Hubble Telescope) Little or no price pressure, cost insensitive (Apollo Missions) Engineering, research and politics are primary motives Both types of projects can be fun and rewarding!
4899 : Fast, Good, Cheap; Pick 2
4899 : 4 P s of Electronics Performance How good is it? How Precise is it? Package How big is it? Power How much power does it consume? Price How much does it cost?
4899 : You will be designing part of a system. To be successful, you will need to be acutely aware of the various systems that support your electronic design, and use a Big Picture view. Example, IPOD Touch Masterful example of systems integration
4899 : Product Sub-systems Energy Mechanical Measurement Safety & Compliance Firmware Human Interface Electronic Hardware Others??? Not an exhaustive list
4899 : Energy Energy Sub-System Chemical Cells Primary (Alkaline, LiMnO 2, etc ) Secondary, rechargeable (PbSO 4, NiCd, NiMH, etc ) Fuel Cell (4H + O 2 2 H 2 O + n e - ) Electro-mechanical Magnetics + Windings Energy Harvesting Piezo-Electric (Vibration) Solar Super Capacitors (Aerogel)????
4899 : Mechanical Sub-System Housing Material? Plastic, metal, paper, recycle-able, incinerate-able? Water tight? Air tight? Assembly? PCB How many layers? What material? FR-4, GETEK, Rogers, etc Design rules? Hardware Screws, standoffs, dampers, bosses, custom tooling Vibration, G-force requirements? Actuators, other items???
4899 : Human Interface Buttons, switches, actuators Displays, Touch-screen, LED s, other indicators Audio, (buzzers, speakers, piezo beepers) Vibration (cell phone buzzers, force feedback joysticks) Inertial (Wii controller) Accelerometers Gyros
4899 : Safety/Compliance/Environmental UL, intrinsic safety (toys, explosive gas applications, etc ) IEC (surge and ESD specs) ETSI (European) FCC Pb-free, RoHS, Green Any standards-committee or government driven initiative that regulates commerce. (And makes your life difficult )
4899 : Measurement Most Common Measurements: Time (or Frequency) Temperature In order to be useful, some sort of measurement must take place. Example, wrist watch measures time.
4899 : Firmware, Software Exists only inside whatever programmable electronic devices are present, MCU, DSP, FPGA, CPLD, etc Programming language? Operating System? Development Environment? Real time? Interrupt driven or polled? Power Management? Manage electronics to minimize energy usage Intellectual Property, Patents Secret Sauce!
4899: Electronics (Finally!!! Yay!!!) Ties every thing together, the nervous system Provides a platform for firmware to operate Transfers energy and information (info = energy) Creates I/O Pathways, interfaces Computes results based on present and past input. The Electronics can not be designed until everything else is reasonably well understood.
4899 : Review Think beyond the electronics- What is the problem that you re pursuing a solution for?
4899 : A simple, yet practical product Hand-wash Timer According to CDC and other regulatory bodies, a proper hand washing takes at least 20 seconds! Mandated policies for hospitals and restaurants 20 seconds is actually a pretty long time demo!
4899 : Hand-wash timer patents! Use Zoomit to zoom in
4899 : Sample Product ($85!!!)
4899 : Samples, continued Disney! Use Zoomit to zoom in
4899 : Discuss the Sub-Systems, 5-10min Energy Mechanical Measurement Safety & Compliance Firmware Human Interface Electronic Hardware Others???
4899 : Steve s Electronic Solutions 74HC HC LED Driver Cheaper solution, no programming Poor timing precision, +/- 20% (do we care???) More parts than other solution Tolerates 3xAA batteries, enough for LED drive MSP430F LED Driver Good precision, +/- 2% (are we that particular?) More expensive Fewer parts Requires programming (hidden cost/process here) Tolerates only 2xAA batteries possible LED problem.
4899 : About TI and my AFA Role
