Next Generation Satellite Networks The European Satellite Operators Association (ESOA) Christodoulos A. Protopapas Chairman
The Association of ALL European Operators ESOA is a non-profit European organisation which serves & promotes the common interests of all 10 European satellite operators who deliver information communication services across the globe Most Effective Involvement of Satellite Operators: Providers of satcom services (managed capacity, equipment, S&M, etc.) Serving an aggregated demand to generate economies of scale: A maximum amount of users in a given area for a maximum variety of needs (connectivity during crisis times but also for other non-crisis related uses: schools, offices, hospitals, etc)
The Reach of Satellites 3 geostationary satellites can: See & serve the entire globe Bring broadband to masses of people at the same time Without cumbersome, costly infrastructure that can be re-deployed if necessary Satellites provide vital services today: TV channels/ live coverage/ news events ( TV channels Worldwide and in Europe) Data/ voice/ internet/ mobile services/ corporate-retailer connectivity They are bridges of Culture in Space Media for Information interchange between the people Help for the sustainable development of rural areas Often the presence of satellites goes unnoticed: Because they work!
Broadband Services Today. The advantage of the satellites Broadband Connectivity today is: The steam engine for the development of a country The window for the access to the global economy The provider of sustainable development of the new economy Like the literacy in ancient times.
With satellite coverage, there is no room for a Digital Divide Grouped Users Scattered Users Isolated User
Advantages of Satellite Broadband QUICK - Satellites are flying today & can connect people immediately to broadband with low investment & without cables & posts EASY - Small, easy to use, non-intrusive equipment that can be moved as necessary to serve different areas if & when other technologies/ solutions emerge COST-EFFECTIVE - Pan-European/ pan-regional solutions can drive down costs: with economies of scale satellites could become long-term solutions COMPETITIVE: service/ data-rates/ IP interface Satellites can solve the problem for a larger number of users anywhere independent of distance
