1 IEEE-PEMC 2018 TUTORIAL PROPOSAL 1. TUTORIAL TITLE: Rectification Harmonics in Motor Drives: Modeling and Control 2. TUTORIAL ABSTRACT In modern industrial motor drive applications, low-cost, simple-structure, and high-reliability are the major concerns. Among various standardized front-end solutions, the diode rectifiers and/or siliconcontrolled rectifiers are still the most commonly employed rectification apparatus in adjustable speed drive systems. However, these line-commutated rectifiers introduce harmonics to the grid. In order to deal with the harmonic challenges, cost-effective solutions should be developed to comply with standard regulations. The emphasis of this seminar is systematically to give a complete and clear picture on the power electronics technologies in motor drive applications and views on future research opportunities. More importantly, recent research activities and advanced solutions in this research area for harmonic and low frequency EMI control will be presented. Specifically, this seminar covers harmonic requirements for motor drives, modeling of single-phase and three-phase based rectification systems and PFC technology for harmonic control, and multiple drive systems optimization under ideal and multitude grid faults conditions. 3. WHO SHOULD ATTEND This tutorial is intended for intermediate and advanced audiences in power electronics and its applications in motor drives. Researchers and engineers who seek for the basic knowledge for motor drive systems as well as ac/dc rectification technologies are also very welcome. 1

INSTRUCTORS BIO Frede Blaabjerg (F 03) is currently a Professor with the Department of Energy Technology and the Director of Center of Reliable Power Electronics (CORPE), Aalborg University, Denmark. He has intensive research work on power electronics and its applications in motor drives, wind turbines, PV systems, harmonics, and the reliability of power electronic systems. He was a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Power Electronics Society from 2005 to 2007 and for the IEEE Industry Applications Society from 2010 to He has contributed more than 800 journal and conference papers. Prof. Blaabjerg received the IEEE William E. Newell Power Electronics Award in 2014, the IEEE PELS Distinguished Service Award in 2009, the Outstanding Young Power Electronics Engineer Award in 1998, and 15 IEEE Prize Paper Awards. He served the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics from 2006 to Pooya Davari (S 11 M 13) received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electronic engineering in 2004 and 2008, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in power electronics from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia, in From 2005 to 2014, he was involved in several electronics and power electronics projects as a Development Engineer and PhD scholar. From 2013 to 2014 he was with QUT, as a Lecturer. He joined the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University, as a Postdoctoral Researcher in 2014, where he is currently an Associate Professor. His current research interests include active front-end rectifiers, harmonic mitigation in adjustablespeed drives, electromagnetic interference (EMI) in power electronics, high power density power electronics, and pulsed power applications. Dr. Davari was awarded a research grant from the Danish Council of Independent Research (DFF-FTP) in 2015 and he is currently serving as an editor of the International Journal of Power Electronics. Yongheng Yang (S 12-M 15-SM 17) received the B.Eng. degree in 2009 from Northwestern Polytechnical University, China and the Ph.D. degree in 2014 from Aalborg University, Denmark. In 2013, he was a Visiting Scholar with Texas A&M University, USA. Since 2014, he has been with the, where currently he is an Assistant Professor. His research interests are focused on grid integration of renewable energy systems, power converter design, analysis and control, harmonics identification and mitigation, and reliability in power electronics. Dr. Yang has published more than 80 technical papers and co-authored a book Periodic Control of Power Electronic Converters (London, UK: IET, 2017). Dr. Yang is a Member of the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Students and Young Professionals Committee, where he serves as the Global Strategy Chair and responsible for the IEEE PELS Students and Young Professionals Activities. He is currently an Associate Professor with Aalborg University. Dinesh Kumar (S 08 M 12) received the M.Tech. degree in power system engineering from IIT Roorkee, India, in 2004, and the Ph.D. degree in power electronics engineering from the University of Nottingham, U.K., in From 2004 to 2005, he served as a Lecturer with the Electrical Engineering Department, National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, India. In 2006, he joined the Electrical Engineering Department, Technical University Chemnitz, Germany, as a Research Fellow. Since 2011, he has been with Danfoss Drives A/S, Denmark, where he is currently involved in many research and industrial projects. His research interests include power electronics, harmonic analysis at distribution network, power quality, smart grids, and electromagnetic compatibility. He has served in Scientific Committee Boards and topic chairs in several conferences. He is the Editor of the International Journal of Power Electronics. 3
