The weak points of conventional potentiometers are eliminated with the OPF transmitter, that is, problems like wear, noise, hysteresis and difficulty in obtaining a high repeatability are effectively avoided. This means that the OPF angular position transmitter can be used in situations where conventional technology previously prevented the use of an analogues signal for measuring control. The wellknown potentiometer A conventional potentiometer consists of a resistor which may be made of a carbon composite, a thin metal layer, a coiled resistance wire or similar components. The electric pick-up takes place via a spring loaded wiper which is moved along the resistor. Because of the resulting friction, a certain torque is needed to move the wiper. And this friction is the cause of the weaknesses of conventional potentiometers. Areas of usage The OPF is suitable for measuring radial and axial movements where a linear analogue signal is required. The OPF can be integrated in pointer instruments for measuring pressure and temperature, where a linear analogue signal is required simultaneously with an analogue display. The OPF cab be incorporated in valve positioners where analogue feed-back of the valve position is required. The OPF can be integrated in float type flowmeters where feedback information of the float position is required. The OPF solves the problem The OPF transmitter, whose pick-up system is based on an optoelectronic principle where there is no physical contact between moving parts, provides an extremely high dependability and ensures stable output siganls, even under difficult conditions of operation within a narrow area. The pick-up system consists of a photopotentiometer which in principle functions like a conventional potentiometer. The mechanical wiper has been replaced by a light source with a light-emitting diode (LED) fitted to the end of the inside spindle and the resistor has been replaced by a photoresistant track. The pick-up is effected via the optical beam shinning from the LED onto the photopotentiometer track, which has an infinitely high resolution. The friction-free system is made possible partly because the only contact between the "slider" and the "resistance track" is a beam of light, partly because the energy for the LED is transferred via a transformer where one winding is integrated in the light head and the other is fixed on the electronic part. This advanced system eliminates problems of friction, wear, potentiometer noise, hysteresis and poor repeatability. Another effect is that the shaft can be turned a full 360 an infinite number of times. The whole transmitter is enclosed in a lightproof case that also contains the electronic signal generator providing an analogue output signal of 4-20 ma.

3 Connection and adjustment guide The terminals on the OPF are meant for soldering. Supply line (+) connect to 2, the signal line (-) Are connected in series with the load resistance R L Which can achieve the following value: R L max = Vcc 14V 20 ma RL R batt. The following main measuring areas can be changed by means of the jumper as shown on the sketches. The potentiometer: The OPF can be adjusted for zero and span on top of the cover. Soldering bushing The jumpers When loosen the screw on the side of the cover the two jumpers to change the direction and main measuring area. To change the direction, the double jumpers are replaced as shown on the sketch. (CW and CCW ). CCW CW

4 Mounting The OPF is mounted directly with the axels which are shown Or it can be mounted on a fixture like the one on the sketch. The mechanical 0-adjustment The axel are adjusted roughly when the OPF is fixed to the object, for the (0-dot) on the axel to be aligned to the dot on the housing. Electronic adjustment After the electric connection is made, the fine adjustment can be performed. 0-point adjustment is made by means of the ZERO-screw when the axel-adjustment is 4 ma and the rotating-angle is 0. The measuring area is adjusted by turning the SPAN screw in order for the current signal to be 20 ma at the wanted max rotating angle.it can be necessary to repeat the adjustment a couple of times to achieve the precise values 4-20mA (ma) mA is found on two areas on a turning direction. Check that the 4 ma signal works in accordance with the correct 0 point. Turn the axel in the chosen direction and make sure that the rising signal is linear from 4mA at 0 and 20 ma at the choosen axel position. If the signal is rising or falling rapidly the 0-point are to adjusted again acording to the former instruction.

The transmitter is used when the min. IP protection is 20. Serial No. and production date are placed in the cover. When repair is needed, the OPF must be sent to Tempress Denmark.
