The journey for 5g Thabiso Thukani, Government & Regulatory Affairs, Sub-Saharan Africa 5th SADC Preparatory Meeting for WRC Sep 2015, Gaborone, Botswana Ericsson Internal Page 1
Mobile generations ACROSS time The foundation of mobile telephony Mobile telephony for everyone The foundation of mobile broadband The evolution of mobile broadband The Network for the Networked Society ~1980 ~1990 ~2000 ~2010 ~2020 Historically, higher peak data rates, denser infrastructure and more bandwidth have been the hallmark of each mobile technology generation! Access technologies & new air-interfaces have been the center of attention Ericsson Internal Page 2
5g: some use cases P Broadband experience everywhere anytime Mass market personalized media and gaming Meters and sensors, Massive MTC Remote controlled machines Smart Transport Infrastructure and vehicles Human machine interaction And much more Multiple use-cases beyond MBB supported by a common network platform Ericsson Internal Page 3
Key components of 5G Coverage considerations propagation conditions RF power levels antenna performance QoS Bandwidth considerations very high user data rates number of users suggests that new lower frequency spectrum is needed suggests that new higher frequency spectrum is needed All the above elements need to be addressed from the beginning Ericsson Internal Page 4
Spectrum and data rates Outdoor-to-indoor penetration min 350 MHz to 1 GHz BWs a few to several Gbps Outdoor, hot-spot and indoor deployments ~ 1 5 GHz BWs > 10 Gbps and above Ericsson Internal Page MHz per operator CA available, possibly also with bands below 6 GHz many 100 MHz to 1 GHz per operator CA available, possibly also with bands below 30 GHz 6 / 10 GHz 20 / 30 GHz 100 GHz the majority of the future uses still need to be operated under licensed regimes for IMT, able to support a variety of applications including real time critical industry, medical, TV distribution, and security / safety applications
range 6/10 20 GHz (focus range) For coverage and high data rates supporting consumers that are using mobile devices in challenging locations available bandwidths compared to the higher ranges, would be somewhat restricted minimum bandwidths, possibly of the order of 80 MHz per operator adding-up to about 350 MHz minimum bandwidth possible to find bandwidth of 1 GHz in some countries the need for allocations of the order of 10 % of the range 6 20 GHz; or as an alternative, 14 % of the range GHz outdoor coverage, also for near-line-of-sight conditions; the uplink link budget may be acceptable in the lower end of this range reuse of the current macro grid while applying beamforming outdoor-to-indoor coverage possible with beamforming relatively less complex antenna array systems for beamforming essential for the early deployment of 5G Ericsson Internal Page 6
range GHz For coverage and high data rates coverage, in comparison with the lower ranges, would be somewhat restricted; capacity, in comparison with the higher ranges, would be somewhat restricted (the middle range) the need for allocation of the order of 10 % of the range GHz this range can provide for wider bandwidths to satisfy demands for very high capacity the justification is to provide advanced services and application with greatly improved performance compared to today s performance in most indoor and outdoor circumstances the outdoor macro uplink link budget could be somewhat challenging in comparison essential for the early deployment of 5G Ericsson Internal Page 7
range GHz For extremely high performance, in terms of high peak data rates, but with limited coverage in comparison with the lower ranges the need for allocation of the order of 12% of the range GHz any outdoor macro uplink link budget would be very challenging important for the continuous evolution of 5G Ericsson Internal Page 8
Candidate spectrum WRC-19 Frequency bands currently allocated to the mobile service on a primary basis in the three ITU Regions [ MHz] GHz, GHz, GHz, GHz, GHz, GHz, GHz and GHz GHz, GHz, GHz, GHz, GHz, GHz, and GHz Ericsson Internal Page 9
In Search of 5G Spectrum: A.I.10 Most readings of current and growing consumer trends suggest more spectrum would be needed for IMT into the future We would submit that spectrum for 5G would be needed in both centimetre and millimetre range that is, both from 6 GHz to 20/30 GHz & 20/30 GHz to 100 GHz ranges Centimetre range would be needed for early deployment of 5G systems, and to make services affordable for consumers Agenda Item 10 is an invitation to explore and investigate, so that we can make informed decisions in WRC 19. Call for studies in the 6 GHz -100 GHz range is merely to research physical and technical challenges EACO - Digital Dividend Allocation and Assignment Ericsson AB Page 10
