3 Calculating number of transmitters, size of service area and transmitter output power: Required Field Strength in service area (established by the regulator and documented in the licence or QoS regulations) Receiver Sensitivity and Antenna Gain (establish by the regulator as minimum requirement for QoS) Guard interval, FEC, modulation (determined by the service provider)
4 The introduction of a new broadcasting service is based on two main parameters of the transmission system; the required Carrier to Noise ratio (C/N) and the protection ratios (PR) needed to achieve a given quality target for the delivered signal (e.g. video and audio). ITU-R BT Planning criteria, including protection ratios, for digital terrestrial television services in the VHF/UHF bands EBU BPN 005 Terrestrial digital television planning and implementation considerations
5 Indoor / Outdoor antenna Most coverage studies concerning digital terrestrial TV have been aimed towards fixed reception using roof-level directional receiving antennas Set Top Box (STB) Digital ready television set
6 Fixed Antenna Reception defined as reception where a directional receiving antenna mounted at roof level In calculating the equivalent field strength required for fixed antenna reception, a receiving antenna height of 10 m above ground level is considered It is assumed that near-optimal reception conditions (for the relevant RF channels) are found when the antenna is installed i.e. the best location and direction is selected
7 Portable Antenna Reception Class A (outdoor mobile handheld/in-vehicle) being reception where a portable receiver with an attached or built-in antenna is used - outdoors at no less than 1.5 m above ground level Class B (indoor) being reception where a portable receiver with an attached or built-in antenna is used - indoors at no less than 1.5 m above floor level in rooms / on the ground floor / with a window in an external wall
8 Portable Antenna Reception (Cont d) In calculating the equivalent field strength required for portable antenna reception, variation of building penetration loss from one building to another and also variation from one part of a room to another is taken into consideration
9 Conditions for portable reception differ from fixed reception in: absence of receiving antenna gain and directivity reduced feeder loss generally lower reception height building penetration loss in the case of indoor reception
10 There are in principle 3 kinds of network designs: Single Frequency Network (SFN) Multi Frequency Network (MFN) Hybrid SFN/MFN high power sites with SFN gap fillers (low power transmitters to fill in small gaps in the coverage area)
11 MFN SFN HYBRID Advantages No need for content and timing to be synchronized Cost and time saving in deployment as a large part of the existing analogue network infrastructure may be re-used Disadvantages Requires more spectrum per broadcaster Requires frequency planning Inconvenience to consumers (channel selection and possible change of antenna) Larger number of transmitters compared to SFN One frequency for national deployment Reduced number of transmitters as a result of uniform transmitter coverage per channel Increased availability of spectrum for added capacity / services Synchronization of all transmitters in content and timing SFN cell size limited by guard interval Few frequencies required for national deployment SFN gain i.e. reduced number of transmitters compared to MFN Frequency planning required i.e. reuse Synchronization required for all SFN sub-network transmitters SFN sub-network size limited by guard interval
12 All the signals broadcasted by the transmitters of a SFN must be synchronized in terms of frequency, time and bit: frequency synchronization requires that a common reference oscillator shall drive all cascade oscillators within each transmitter time synchronization requires that each transmitter shall broadcast the nth symbol at Tn ±1 (where Tn denotes the ideal instant for the nth symbol to be transmitted)
13 bit synchronization requires that the same symbol shall be transmitted at the same time. Therefore all carriers shall be identically modulated. Hence the same bits should modulate the same kth carrier

15 ATSC Early ATSC tuners were not very good at handling multipath propagation, but later systems have seen significant improvements. However, no trial of this technology has yet succeeded Through the use of virtual channel numbering, a multifrequency network (MFN) can appear as an SFN to the viewer in ATSC
16 DVB DVB system gives guidelines for setting up of DVB-T transmitting networks. This includes a general description of network topologies for Single Frequency Networks (SFN) and Multi-Frequency Networks (MFN). It allows for re-transmitters, gap-filler transmitters (essentially a low-power synchronous transmitter) and use of SFN between main transmitter towers
17 Broadcast Spectrum (VHF/UHF) Frequency allocation based on MFN or SFN The frequency coordination required by regulator Choice of standard determines network design and spectrum allocations Auxiliary Links in Backhaul Network High bandwidth digital links (HD/3D content) Digital synchronization Outside broadcast links (OB)
18 Concern for TV receiver manufacturers and consumers from the threat of high levels of interference from mobile service base stations and handsets overloading (blocking) the sensitive TV tuner front end circuitry
19 Interference Issues in the UHF Band Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile service providers Adjacent channel interference from Analog transmitters Adjacent channel interference from Digital transmitters
20 ITU-R SG6/WP-6A is working on a new version of the ITU- R BT 1368 network planning document, that will include recommendations on protection ratio and overload threshold for network planning purposes against a variety of different types of interference, including DVB-T/H, UMTS and LTE base stations and handsets The UK DTG DBook 5.01 and DBook 6.1 and the Digital Europe Ebook include receiver specifications for protection against digital adjacent channel interference
