4 Glossary Zero Crossin ZC ZC firin mode is used with the loic output from a temperature controller and so the thyristor operates like a contactor. The cycle time is performed by the temperature controller. Zero Crossin minimizes interferences as the thyristor unit switches ON-OFF at zero voltae. Delayed Trierin DT Used to switch the primary coil of transformers when coupled with normal resistive loads (not cold resistance) on the secondary, DT prevents the inrush current when zero voltae (ON-OFF) is used to switch the primary. The thyristor unit switches OFF when the load voltae is neative and switches ON only when positive with a pre-set delay for the first half cycle. Burst Firin BF This firin is performed diitally within the thyristor unit at zero volts, producin no EMC interference. Analoue input is necessary for BF and the number of complete cycles must be specified for 5% power demand. This value can be between and 55 complete cycles, determinin the speed of firin. When is specified, the firin mode becomes Sinle Cycle (SC). Phase Anle PA PA controls the power to the load by allowin the thyristor to conduct for part of the AC supply cycle only. The more power required, the more the conduction anle is advanced until virtually the whole cycle is conductin for % power. The load power can be adjusted from to % as a function of the analoue input sinal, normally determined by a temperature controller or potentiometer, PA is normally used with inductive loads. Soft Start + Burst Firin now availabe as an option. Sinle Cycle SC SC is the fastest zero crossin switchin method. At 5% input sinal, one cycle is ON and one cycle is OFF. At 75%, cycles are ON and one cycle is OFF. f power demand is 76% the unit performs the same as for 75% but every time the unit switches ON the microprocessor divides 76/75 and memorises the ratio. When the sum is one the unit delivers one cycle more to the load. With this firin it is necessary to have analoue input. Honeywell Thyristor Catalo Soft Start+Burst Firin S+BF This is an additional feature to Burst Firin. Startin in Phase Anle mode, the unit ramps from zero to full voltae at a pre-set time, finishin at full conduction for the remainder of the ON period. dealy used to switch small inductive loads, S+BF avoids current sure and minimizes electrical interference. Feedback/Control Mode Supply voltae fluctuations chanes the power to the load. To overcome this effect the voltae supplied to the load is measured and compared with the power demand from the controller. The error sinal is used to automatically hold the power at the value requested. Three types of control more are available: n oltae Control Mode, where the input sinal is proportional to the voltae output (voltae feedback). n n n Current Control Mode, where the input sinal is proportional to the current output (current feedback). Power Control Mode, where the input sinal is proportional to the power output (power feedback). As an option it is possible to transfer control mode from voltae to power via a simple diital command.

Use Phase Anle + Current Limit. THYRSTOR HM-PH is suitable to control resistive loads with delta or star connection without neutral. Three phase load with star plus neutral connection must be controlled on the three phases. On three phase silicon carbide elements x feedback is suested to have a constant power control. This is necessary to compensate resistance chane with temperature and ae. Resistance value at the end of element life is times the oriinal value. With THYRSTOR HM use BF firin and Power Limit. These resistances chane with temperature but have low variations with ae. 13 Thyristor Unit connected with Transformers THYRSTOR HCL has been specifically desined to drive transformers and has all the drive capability & techniques required, confiurable from the front panel display. Close examination of the transformer application needs to be made as the typical inrush current, when switched on. This over-current will have the result to damae Fuses or Thyristor. To avoid this peak current two techniques can be used: Phase anle firin with soft start and current limit. This type of firin can be used with all types of loads. - Normal resistance. - Cold resistance (Example: Kanthall Super elements). - Transformer coupled with normal or cold resistance. - With cold resistance use feed-back. Burst firin usin the Delay Trierin (DT) technique. To avoid manetic circuit saturation, the thyristor unit will switch OFF when the load voltae is neative and switch ON aain when positive. The unit also has an adjustable delay on voltae zero crossin. n this way it is possible to switch ON when current is zero. This Firin technique can only be used with normal resistance, where its resistive value remains constant with temperature variations.
