2 Overview Introduction PepperlFuchs optical data couplers provide wireless transfer of data communication through a modulated infrared light beam. Unlike RF-based communication, the modulated signal is immune to noise interference. Data couplers are used as a set: one to transmit the data and one to receive. They are commonly used in overhead monorail systems, mobile transport units, automated guided vehicles, and material transfer stations. Data couplers replace slip rings and drag cables that are susceptible to noise and have limited fleibility. They have a high tolerance for misalignment that frequently occurs in applications with moving equipment Modulation Technique PepperlFuchs uses frequency shift keying (FSK) to modulate the infrared light used to transfer information between the data couplers. FSK can be thought of as digital modulation. The transmitted signal is shifted between two frequencies that correspond to either logic bits 0 or. Narrow band filtering, used on the receiver side to convert the data back to logic, prevents etraneous signals from corrupting the transmitted data. The data transmission is unaffected by signal level variation. Output Interfaces PepperlFuchs offers both serial and parallel output interfaces for the data couplers. Parallel data couplers have eight discrete input and eight output signals, whereas serial data couplers require only two signals for communication. Since serial data couplers transfer data one bit at a time, they are slower than the parallel data couplers. Because of their speed, parallel data couplers are preferred for communications between short distances but increased cost and line losses make them less practical for data transmission over longer distances. Note: All optical data coupler model numbers shown are single pieces, not pairs. Applications Information echange for automated guided vehicles Optical Data Couplers In a steel mill scrap yard, optical data couplers provide wireless information echange between a crane operator s touch screen and a central controller. Unlike a previously installed RF system, the optical data coupler s operation was unaffected by signals from mobile communication devices. Main Controller An overhead monorail system is used to dip (for the purpose of cleaning) metal machine parts. The vat of cleaning solvent used is determined by the type of part being immersed. Optical data couplers transfer serial information necessary for a remote main controller to identify the products, regulate timing functions, govern motor control, etc. PLC Cleaning Solvents 72

For transmission, two units are required in which one unit is the designated Master and the other unit is the designated Slave. The parallel binary signals at the inputs D through D8 are converted and transmitted serially as an 8-bit string to the coupler acting as a receiver. In the receiver, the string is converted into parallel data again and applied to the outputs D through D8. PPM (Pulse Position Modulation) is used for data transmission. The entire cycle, in which both of the 8-bit words are transferred bi-directionally, one after the other and multipleed, lasts 35ms. This corresponds to a transfer rate of 350 Baud. The last data received is saved and is accessible at the output until the net changes are made. Status Indicator LEDs Receivers Transmitters Sensitivity adjustment (behind the sealing screw) 8 8 Green LEDs: Data inputs Red LEDs: Data outputs Yellow LED: Signal strength (ecess gain = ) Green LED: Power Figure The LEDs on the unit indicate the status of the device. Eight green LEDs indicate the states of inputs, and eight red LEDs indicate the states of outputs D through D8. In both cases, when the LED is on, the input or output is active. Another green LED (Power-ON) indicates if the device is connected to a supply voltage. The remaining yellow LED (RD) indicates if the device is receiving data with an ecess gain of at least one, which is sufficient for data transfer. The eight green input LEDs and eight red output LEDs are located in two separate rows, and the power LED and signal strength LED are located between these two rows (see Figure ). Inputs and Outputs Acceptable switch inputs to the DAD5-8P include dry contacts and open collector transistors, such as transistor outputs of sensors. The outputs of the DAD5-8P are PNP transistor outputs. The SYNC-output, also a PNP output, can be used as a start signal to multiple several masters. It indicates the end of the complete transmission and receiving cycle. With the falling edge of this signal, the output data is valid and new input can be read. This output can be used to launch another Master via the Enable input, which allows up to four Masters to be interconnected. The units then must be addressed via the A and A2 DIP switches below, and the slave corresponding to its respective master should have the same address. For eample, the SYNC output from the first master (with address A=0, A2=0) would be connected to the ENABLE input of the second master (with address A=0, A2=). The signal strength output (a PNP output) is active when there is sufficient ecess gain (i.e., the signal strength is acceptable). The Enable Input of a Master must be connected to V in order to operate the unit. The transmitter is deactivated if the Enable input is connected to V- or disconnected. The Enable Input of a Slave is not used. The Master/Slave input determines if a device is designated as a Master or a Slave. For transmission, two units are required in which one unit is the designated Master (Master/Slave input ON) and the other unit is the designated Slave (Master/Slave input OFF). Master h Synch Master l Synch Master in Master 2 Enable Master 2 Synch Master 2 Slave h l h Synch Slave l (only when receiving) 3 ms 3 ms 35 ms transmit receive transmit receive receive transmit 0.5ms 0.3ms transmit Controls for DAD5-8P The DAD5-8P has several additional controls for operation, including a potentiometer located on the side of the housing, and three DIP switches located inside the housing. The potentiometer controls the distance the infrared beam travels. This adjustment is helpful in eliminating cross talk between data couplers caused by stray infrared signals. (In multiple unit applications, cross talk may occur due to the wide offset angle of the transmission beam.) DIP switch functions are described below: A: determines the address of a data coupler pair. A master/slave pair must be set to the same address in order to allow data transfer. A2: determines the address of a data coupler pair. A master/slave pair must be set to the same address in order to allow data transfer. A3: not used. A4: determines what happens if the light beam between the two halves of the data coupler is broken. If the switch is OFF, then the data outputs are turned off in the event of a beam obstruction. If the switch is ON, then the most recently received data is held in the outputs in the event of a beam obstruction. receive 74

7 DAD30 Optical Data Couplers DAD30 Operation The DAD30 series allows full-duple serial data transfer for transmission rates up to 9.2kBaud and ranges up to meters. If two full-duple routes are to be used in parallel, one pair should have an infrared light source and the other pair should have a visible red light source. The serial data is transferred from the transmitter to the receiver without using an intermediate protocol. Status Indicator LEDs The DAD30 series has a two-color LED. When the LED is red, the device is receiving data at an ecess gain of at least one. The green LED indicates it is receiving data at an ecess gain of at least three. The higher the ecess gain of the data transmission, the stronger the signal. An additional red LED indicates if the Data Blanking Input (described below) is active. Inputs and Outputs Signal Strength Output # (Pin 6) PNP output, shortcircuit proof, ma, 30VDC. When active, this output indicates there is sufficient ecess gain to allow data transfer. Analog Signal Strength Output (Pin 9).8VDC to 5.8VDC (0mA maimum current) which indicates the ecess gain for alignment purposes. At 2.5VDC, an ecess gain of at least one is achieved, and at 4.2VDC, an ecess gain of at least three is achieved. Data Blanking Input (Pin 0) Applying 4-30VDC to this input causes all receiver outputs to be turned off on the opposite coupler. This does not deactivate the couplers, but rather simulates a logic 0 on the opposite side. Signal Strength Output #2 (Pin 2) PNP output, shortcircuit proof, ma, 30VDC. When active, this output indicates there is three times sufficient ecess gain to allow data transfer. RS-422 Data Switch Input (Pin 3) Attaching V- or ground to this input switches off the RS-422 mode line driver (pins 6 and 7), allowing only data to be transmitted by RS-422 but not to be received. This function is needed if several data transmissions use the same data line (multidrop). The normal mode (in which Pin 3 is not connected) allows an internal pull-up resistor to apply 5VDC to this pin and activate the line driver for RS-422. Transmitter Deactivation (Pin 22) Applying V deactivates the transmitter. All other outputs relate directly to one of the three interface types that can be used for the DAD30 series: RS-232, RS- 422, and CL20mA. When the light beam between the transmitter and receiver is broken, the receiver side goes into pause status. This status is logic high for non-inverted data lines. Controls for DAD30 The DAD30 series has eight DIP switches, which are located inside the housing. These switches should be set as follows: S: Carrier Frequency Setting. To allow one full duple route (two couplers), the transmitter and receiver must be set at different frequencies. That is, one device must be set at frequency F and the other device at F2. ON = transmitter F, receiver F2 OFF = transmitter F2, receiver F S2: Inversion of the Transmitter Signal. ON = transmitter input signal is inverted OFF = transmitter input signal is not inverted S3: Inversion of the Receiver Signal. ON = receiver output signal is inverted OFF = receiver output signal is inverted Caution: Only one of switches S4, S5, and S6 should be turned on. S4: 20mA CL (Current Loop) Interface. ON = 20mA CL interface active OFF = 20mA CL interface not active The Logic 0 is defined as 0mA, and logic is defined as 20mA. The 20mA CL interface creates a 20mA current loop between the data coupler and a serial device. Each loop is required to have a current source, whether the current source is at the optical data coupler end or the serial device end. The 20mA CL interface can transfer data over cable lengths of up to 3,280 feet (km). S5: RS422 Interface ON = RS422 interface active OFF = RS422 interface not active Serial voltage interface suitable for transmission on up to 500 meter cable length. Logic 0 is defined as 2 to 5VDC, and logic is defined as 2 to 5VDC. S6: RS232 Interface ON = RS232 interface active OFF = RS232 interface not active Serial voltage interface suitable for up 20 meter cable length. Logic 0 is defined as 3 to 5VDC, and logic is defined as 3 to 5VDC. S7: Only used for 20mA CL interface ON = Input interface is active OFF = Input interface is passive S8: Only used for 20mA CL interface ON = Output interface is active OFF = Output interface is passive The active mode for the 20mA CL interface activates a current source in the DAD30 unit itself. The passive mode for the 20mA CL interface indicates that a current source must be applied eternally and is not active in the DAD30 unit. Please see Figure on previous page. 77

An LS60-DA-P with an average frequency of F and an LS60-DA-P with an average frequency of F2 are required for data transfer. (See Figure.) The data transmission is carried out by means of modulated infrared light in both directions. Figure LS60-.../F F For alignment ease, each LS60-DA-P includes a visible red LED which is seen between the transmitter and receiver lenses on the housing front and is visible from long distances. The LED flashes when the LS60 is not aligned, but the flashing frequency is reduced as it detects a signal from another LS60. When the alignment aid turns off completely, good alignment and good ecess gain have been achieved. For fine-tuning the alignment, the front panel of the LS60 includes an LED bar graph display of signal strength.the eight LEDs shown under "Signal" on the front panel accomplish this per Figure 2. LS60-DA-P employs Telegram Verification Technology (TVT) to prevent bus errors that can occur when the light beam is interrupted. TVT stops the transfer of invalid transfers by a bit by bit data check. It is possible to deactivate TVT in order to obtain protocol-free data transfer, which is suitable RS-485 transfer (which has different timing conditions than PROFIBUS). Data transfer rate and TVT are selected by the two pushbuttons on the front panel of the LS60. To change either parameter, push and hold both and keys. Release both keys when the LED corresponding to the datarate begins flashing. This is parameterization mode. Press the key to jump to the net datarate setting. Press and hold the key to accept the new datarate and eit paramerization mode. Because of PROFIBUS standards, the datarate of 375 kbaud and TVT mode are mutually eclusive. To deactivate TVT, enter parameterization mode as described above, and jump to the TVT LED with the key. Then use the key to toggle between TVT active and TVT non-active modes. When the TVT LED flashes brighter, TVT is active. When the LED flashes dimmer, TVT is inactive. Leave the LED in the desired mode, and the LS60 automatically eits parameterization mode in a few seconds. All settings are stored when power is disconnected from the unit. If a LS60-DA-P is located at the end of a bus topology, a bus termination is required. An eternal standard termination resistor should be connected to the "Bus Out/ Termination" connector. The LS60-DA-P includes an alarm output. This PNP output turns ON for inadequate ecess gain (weak signal), which could be due to poor alignment, ecess lens contamination, or ecessive distance between the two 722

13 LS60-DA-P Optical Data Couplers units. The LS60 also includes a keylock input which disables both pushbuttons. When this input is jumpered to (-) of the supply, the keypad is deactivated. Full programming details are in an instruction manual included with the LS60-DA-P.
